Does the hinge closest to the base also articulate?
Michael R
on May 27, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Yes! Both are adjustable.
Each hinge can rotate down into a clamshell position, then up to a right angle and about 30° beyond for a total 120° of movement. They rotate smoothly and can hold in place at any angle with what feels like a nylon friction bushing. There is almost no play in either hinge for me.

I am not quite sure what you mean by articulate, but the lower hinge does allow the lamp to move in the same plane as the upper hinge. Forward and back, if you will. Neither hinge will allow the lamp to twist or rotate side-to-side.

No, this sticks straight up and only hinges at the top. I have found it an excellent light for a crowded computer desk. It is folded away when not in use and can be brought up and easily aimed when needed.

Yes it does, the same as the upper hinge. It's a pity they didn't design a way to pivot it left and right as well as up and down. As it is, the lamp is limited to one plane of motion.

Yes, But the main arm will not fold back on itself like I was hoping, it will only open fully to the angle shown in the photo.

Would this work on a piano?
John H
on Apr 13, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi John, In my experience, this light is best used for lighting areas that run parallel to the light's head. That is to say it casts light in a sort of narrow rectangle. I'd be concerned if planning on using with a piano that there'd be no way to mount on the left or right side of the key's. I'd also be concerned it would not be high enough to light your sheet music at the same time as lighting the keys. But this is all based on my experience while lighting a desk. Experience may vary with a piano.

Do you want to highlight the music or the keyboard? The clamp opening is 2.5 inches at the widest. If you were wishing to highlight the keys and clamped it on either end of the keyboard, it extends out from the side to cover 30 inches or so. On my upright that would cover Middle-C, however the clamp would only fit horizontally, with the control panel pointing down.

It is a great lamp... well worth the price. However, be sure to look at the picture of how it CLAMPS ON... I do not see how that could be done on a piano. But, if you can, go for it.

If I have the light set as I want it and I control it remotely with an electrical plug device (Meross or other Smart Home smart outlet) to turn it on and off. Will this lamp turn back on from the plug device, or will it remain off? (The desk stand unit I bought from Monoprice will not turn back on with the Smart Home device. I have to turn on the Smart Home device and then additionally turn on the on switch on the lamp which does not work for Smart Home setup.)

BEST ANSWER: If the lamp is on, unplugging the lamp from the power source and plugging it back in will not make the lamp turn back on. So no, it likely wouldn't work for your use case.

I appreciate that you have written words in the English language, and I understand the meaning of most of those individual words. But I am afraid that I do not understand what they mean when they are all strung together to form sentences.
I wish I could be of more help.

Incredibly fragile hinges
Of the three lamps I've had (two original purchases, and one RMA replaced unit), all have had hinges randomly fail, with the the RMA sent unit failing in BOTH hinges immediately breaking out of the box while unfolding the lamp for mounting.

It's big, slim, and bright. The aluminum chassis is great, and seems solid enough for as slim and tall as it us.

Works but could be better.
The concept is great and the price point was very attractive. I dislike that the ports are very difficult to reach. The power cord could have been longer too.

A right angle plug would make it more cubicle friendly. The USB port is on the back & unreachable.
