Do we plug the usb-c into the laptop or do we plug it into the monitor?

BEST ANSWER: I used to plug from my laptop/surface into my portable dual monitor system. It also works just laptop to monitor. It is an active connection so it conveys the power that is channeled via your Type C port of PC/laptop.

You plug the USB C connector into the computer and the hdmi into the monitor. If you have a monitor with a USB C connector, you could get a double ended USB C cable instead and plug into USB C on both devices.

Enter the USB-C into the computer. The HDMI goes into the monitor.

BEST ANSWER: HDMI version is 1.4. the version 3.1 is the USB-C portion, as the latest one is 3.1 and is actually capable of letting you output to 4k, but at 30fps.

Is this an active or passive adapter/converter cable?

BEST ANSWER: Hi, it is "active", I bought it to use for a portable dual monitor system. I am using it as a power/HDMI (video) transfer source utilizing the power output of my USB Type C connection on my laptop and MS Surface 7 respectively. This solved a problem I did not know I had when I bought the monitor system. Hope that helps.

So funny thing, I actually already bought this and I'm also pretty darned sure it's active but I saw no indication on the product page and wanted to somehow make it known for others.
(the way I was able to tell is via the 'xrandr' terminal command on Linux; with passive it'll list the active output as "HDMI" but, with active, it'll list the active output as "DisplayPort" or "DP")

It appears well built and works well with limited use so far.
Product arrived a couple of days earlier than I expected. Workmanship looks good and it works well in limited use so far.
