Works well to transfer tapes to computer, does not work as webcam.
I bought the Bilingual cable to connect my Panasonic PV-GS9 (small tape-based camcorder) to my iMac OS10.4. Using "Photo Booth" the computer shows the camcorder as an external camera, but it will NOT take a photo nor a video. Using "iMovie" the computer shows the camcorder also, but will NOT allow the camcorder to import clips. iMovie WILL allow my camcorder to upload / play a tape while the computer records the tape. But you cannot use this camcorder as a "webcam". I am confident that the problem is in the software incompatibility and that this cable is working just fine.
I have over 200 mini DV tapes I need to transfer to hard drive. This 9 pin to 4 pin enables me to use my older iMac with my camcorder (which is now hardly ever used) and it works perfectly. Really happy with the purchase at a very low price. If I sent the tapes out to be transferred it would have run into the thousands of dollars.
I had to connect my ancient, FireWire 400 video camera to my new, 20126 MacBook Pro with USB-C ports only, and this was the final link in the chain. Like others here, I didn't even know such a cable existed! Go, Monoprice!!
good cable. I immediately ordered a second one. Using a Sony digital converter I can now import video clips through Firewire800 port and capture with Quicktime. Then drop into FCP X.....thus bridging the world of digital and tape.
