Do I need to drill the desk table top or can I just put it on top?
A shopper
on Nov 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Yes of course drilling is required to anchor the tabletop to the electric sit-stand desk. Place the tabletop on floor set desk stand on top of it (up side down) and position it to desired location. Drill pilot holes thru screw openings of stand, be sure to not drill to far thru tabletop surface. Use appropriate screws to secure top to stand and flip it back over.

I would screw on whatever top you have. The monoprice top has holes pre drilled for this, but I used an old desk top. Without screws leaning on the desk while standing will slide/flip the top off the legs. Use screws appropriate for your top.

It will be much more secure if you drill it. That is the most recommended. If the table top is heavy enough you may be able to just set it on top. You will still need to adhere the up/down button controller somehow.

BEST ANSWER: Hi, although we have desktop options available, these desk frames are indeed spec'd to work with your own desktop. It could work with an existing desktop you might already have, or you could purchase one that fits your specific needs. Some things to keep in mind are:
1. Make sure the top's total weight is within the desk frame's capacity and allows for items you will place on the desk (154 lbs for this model, other models can support higher).
2. Try to limit excessive overhangs where the desk frame is not able to provide support towards the edges since some materials may sag over time while others might not be as durable.
3. It is recommended to avoid hollow-core or honeycomb desks, like the cheap options in furniture stores. Those kinds of desks are harder to mount securely and may not support monitor mounts or heavy electronics on the desk.
4. It is recommend to mount the desktop securely since these desks are not static. The frame comes with mounting screws for wood tops, you could consider metal mounting standoffs, heavy duty adhesive, or even double sided mounting tape if using other materials.
Hope this helps!

As long as your top is within the size measurements 33' to 63" and thick enough that the screws you use don't go through then I would say yes you can use any top. I put a round birch butcher block table top with two drop down leaves on mine and it worked perfectly. I love the product, it goes up and down smoothly with my two monitors and laptop on it. it is perfect for my small office.

As long as it fits the measurements and weight requirements it will be fine. I added it to an existing modular desk. I simply unscrewed the desk top from the sides and bottom and inserted the new automatic legs. Desk looks completely normal except the up and down switch, until I raise it, and "magic"!

Where do one get a top for the desk?
Steve H
on Dec 30, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi, we do not have direct-fit desktops for this frame at the moment, but we have several desktop options that could be made to fit if you are comfortable with drilling or positioning the desktop by yourself (desk top product numbers: 21601-21606, 30908-30910, 30912-30914, 33085 and 33086). Those desk tops are are actually spec'd for our other sit-stand desk frames and so they won't have the mounting holes lined up exactly, but you could use the self-drilling mounting screws or drill your own mounting holes if you go this route. Other customers also use their existing desk tops and just transfer to this frame. Finally, there are customers who purchase desktops on their own from furniture stores or home improvement stores and just mount those on their own, the important thing here is to get a solid-core desk top and avoid hollow or paper honeycomb desktops that are not good for computer or office use. I hope this helps. Thanks.

I needed a glass top for this desk and was able to find a glass topped coffee table with the right measurements on a local buy, sell, trade site so I donated the base and used the top. It fits perfectly at 2'x3' and was just what I needed. Because the top of the desk fits on the frame exactly it is not adhered to the frame at this time. The little rubber grommets on the frame cause enough friction to hold it in place for my needs.

I purchased both the single and double motor adjustable desk frame and made my own desk tops. I purchased finished plywood at Home Depot and had them cut it for me to size. I finished the desk tops in different way and it was fairly simple. It’s nice building your own since you can customize the size to your needs.

If by the control unit you mean the buttons to raise the desk, the wire is long and it can be mounted wherever you like on the desktop. If you mean the actual motor, it is mounted to the leg of the desk and the legs can be assembled to the desktop on either the right or left by just turning the legs around, the top desk mounts are the same size from the front and back. BEST ANSWER: Hi, the recommended desktop width is mostly to minimize the unsupported overhang beyond the desk frame to ensure long term durability and stability by keeping most of the load between the desk legs. Wider tops should be doable if the material can tolerate overhangs and won't sag and if you could keep the load balanced with the center of gravity towards the middle of the desk for best results. Hope this helps.

My frame has been real solid, especially once I added my desktop to it and screwed it in. I would worry about your proposed setup for a desk for two reasons.
1. The manufacturer's recommendation is almost certainly to prevent the desk from being tipped when too much weight is placed too far away from the supports. You would increase this risk and likely increase your chances of destroying something because your desk may be further from the floor now.
2. I don't know what kind of door desk you have, you may be making a joke. Regardless, if your desk is made out of cheap material (thin MDF, "card-wood", or similar) I would be worried that though your desk may not tip, the prolonged forces of a monitor or other things on your desk would bow or break your desktop.

Its not the length that is the issue, its the weight. The longer it is the heavier it gets. If you are not having it go up and down constantly it maybe fine. I have a 48" x 24" x 2' solid butcher block on mine and it is fine, but I don't have it go up and down a lot either. If you do use it up and down a lot it may burn out the motor faster. That's my best advice, good luck.

I think it would depend on the thickness of the door/desktop and the position of drawers. To gain stability for the longer desk (mine is 6' also) you will need to expand the base legs as wide as possible. That may leave little room for the drawers depending on their location.

Yes, it is width expandable. I built a desk for my son and daughter. One was a large desk top and the other a smaller more apartment friendly desktop. I don’t recall how much you can adjust it, but the product description has it. At least it did when I purchased my products.

Will this work for a glass top?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: Short answer is yes..
Assuming you're referring to a clear glass top you want to be sure you're ok with seeing the motor and the cord (the rest is nice and clean). Also know that a mouse doesn't work with a glass top if you're using it as a computer desk.
FYI, I transitioned from glass to wood. Much prefer the wood.

I don’t advise it. You need to screw the top in to secure it. Also the mechanics aren’t really something you want to look at through the glass

BEST ANSWER: Hi, as others have mentioned, this is just for the desk frame. If you have an existing desk with a top that can be separated, you could use this frame to get sit-stand height adjustability. We also have some top options you could use, you would just need to do some DIY to pre-drill and screw the top on. You could consider the following tops: 30913 or 30909.

No top is included. You either need to purchase on monoprice separately or source one from a local store, I have used them with the three piece top that monoprice sells (it’s a lot cheaper to ship than the one piece) and I have used them with a cheap top from ikea.

Can wheels be added?
A shopper
on Nov 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi, this desk was not designed nor tested to be used with wheels or casters, so we cannot recommend this application. Adding casters could affect stability, especially at full height extension. While it may be possible to replace the desk feet with screw-on casters, the desk could lose stability without additional bracing on the lower legs. Unfortunately bracing the lower desk legs reduces user leg room and wouldn't be ideal for typical use. Hope this helps.

I was able to purchase wheels from a local hardware store that screwed in. It rolls really well and has been perfect but I do not use the desk as it fullest height so can not vouch for the stability at that height. However, the wheels are screwed in and stable for the heights at which I am using the desk and it rolls really well.

Fully assembled, how can I get rid of the wobble? I would advise designing it with a second stabilizing point as even using the mouse a lot causes everything on the desk to wobble
Michael K
on Aug 14, 2020
BEST ANSWER: Hi, thanks for your feedback. This is our lightest and most budget oriented desk, so it is a scaled down version and is not as stable as our bigger single motor and dual motor desks. Our dual motor desk, in particular, have more robust frames.
To reduce wobble, some things to check that could help are:
- whether the parts are bolted on sufficiently tight
- if the top is sized properly (only a reasonable unsupported overhang)
- if the top is mounted to the frame to add stability
- if the feet are level on the ground
- if the accessories on the desk are installed properly / securely (like for monitor mounts which could amplify wobble)
- if the weight distribution and force applied are mostly centered (vs. towards the edges)
Hope this helps.

I suggest using a heavier top or going to the dual motor version. We have built 4 of the single motor style and all 4 (2 engineers, CTO, CEO) got used to the wobble quickly. I bought the dual motor fold-out version for my son to take to university, but we haven't built it yet.

That might be just short of being able to get the screws in on both sides, and you will have a tiny bit of frame sticking out on the sides and front/back. The top of the frame where the tabletop attaches measures 19” on each side (that run front to back), and 49.25” across side to side (in the middle, like a big capital I. Hope this helps!

Depth is likely not going to be an issue, as it is only a recommendation and tipping is unlikely with the way the feet are situated. I would be mindful of the; 1. minimum width requirements, as the desk can only be so narrow and 2. the overall weight of your table top, as that weight should not exceed 154 lbs. This weight is the total table weight, so think about your monitor, rig, accessories, or whatever you are planning to put on the desk.

BEST ANSWER: I have not checked the sizing. I’d imagine theyre 1/4” or 3/8”
But what I have found with mine is that if you install a cross brace. They actually kinda sway back and forth. Mine stays put and has about 2” of wiggle when I push on it laterally.
Wheels would be awesome but would probably for sure need the extra support. The legs are steel so you could also drill and tap holes for your preferred caster size.

what is the difference between this and 15722 ?
A shopper
on Nov 29, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Hi, the main differences are the single motor, the basic up/down controller with no preset function, the slightly scaled down frame dimensions, and of course the lower price point. This desk frame still has comparable overall functionality and would be a good solution for the home or for users who don't change their desk heights that often.
To expound, the single motor does not accelerate as fast as the dual motors, and probably not as quiet. It has a slightly lower weight capacity of 154 lbs (vs. 176 lbs). This desk has a basic up/down controller that's still easy to use, but does not have user-programmable preset heights like the 15722. This desk also has 2-stage legs that don't go as low at 28 inches at the lowest setting (vs. 24.4). Frame width range is slightly narrower at 33-63 inches wide (vs. 40-67 inches), and the top frame is not as robust as the heavy-duty parallel supports on the 15722.
Hope this helps.

How wide are the top mounts? My desk is 19 to 20 inches wide at points to account for the live edge. How wide are the feet?

BEST ANSWER: Hi, the top mounts are 18.9 inches long (front to back) so it should work with that size. The feet are 25.6 inches long. The width of the desk adjusts from 28.5 to 43.1 inches side to side. Please just check that the live edge top is within the 154 lb rated weight capacity of this frame for best results. If you need a higher weight capacity, you can check out product 15722 or product 31291. Thanks for checking.

BEST ANSWER: Hi, this should work, just check that the weight is within this desk's capacity. Also one more thing to check is if the depth of the counter top is sufficient for your needs since counter tops might be a bit narrower compared to desk tops. Thanks for checking.

I am looking at getting this desk, can I just use a sheet of 3/4” plywood for a top? What’s the recommended width?
A shopper
on Mar 29, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Hi, 3/4 plywood would work although you might need to prep the surface to make it more comfortable to use. The width of this desk frame adjusts from 32.7-47.2 inches, we recommend desktops 33-63" wide and 26-32 inches deep. The main limitations for desk size is to keep the desk balanced and to make sure the overhangs (the unsupported portion of the desktop) are reasonable for the material used to ensure long term durability. Hope this helps.

Just what I needed
Built a small standing desk to fit in a limited space. Most standing desks available for sale are too big and I was able to make a 34" x 20" desk with this frame kit. Used 3/4" plywood for table top and assembly was straightforward with instructions written in clear English

Simple but great stand
I got this frame as most other adjustable tables came with a desk top I didn't care for
It arrived quick and was easy to put together. I made a quick table top out of some planks I had lying around. Works quite well and can easily be made different widths as needed
