If you have standard 16in on center studs, this will not fit horizontally.

I just measured mine, and the cutout size is 9 3/4" by 14 5/8"; 10 3/4" by 15 5/8" overall (including grill, which is the same dimension as the overall size.) The depth is 3 3/4" from the outer wall, so they should fit in walls with standard 2x4 studs.

No real reason against it, except for the price. Oh, the tweeter does not articulate, so that is sub-optimal for ceiling. I would do something cheaper in the ceiling with an aimeable tweeter. .

Will there be a backbox available? Maybe things have changed but I know some of Atlantic Tech's speakers needed a backbox to be THX certified. THX certification notwithstanding, there are plenty of reasons to want a (prefabbed) backbox specific for your in-wall speaker. They'd be easy enough to make, but it'd sure be nice to have one available for purchase.

BEST ANSWER: The design is an open baffle design, and was THX certified as an open baffle design. To add a back box may compromise sound quality. A backbox would require different tuning.

hello
i know a question has been asked and answered as far as positioning (horizontal vs vertical) but wanted to know, based on the desgin of the speaker, for best performance and sound etc...if these were to be used for rear surrounds, if mounted vertically, the tweeters would both be facing "inwards" towards the center of the room. (with woofers on the outsdie)...would this sound better worse same as mounitng them horizontal as is? thank you.

BEST ANSWER: As you propose with the tweeters inward and woofers aligned vertically should be ideal, but there are too many factors that could affect that, including size and shape of room, how close the surrounds are to perpendicular walls, etc. It would be extremely difficult to say with 100% certainty that one way is better than another. I just bought these for Atmos speakers and the 365s for all the rest, so my application is a little different. I am not a fan of horizontal woofers in any case though. I've noticed room modes on multiple setups where the woofers were in line horizontally.

Can these or any other in walls (beside the lower end angle ones) be mounted at an angle?
Alex N
on Jun 27, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Well, the tweeter is not aimable. Other than that, I dont see how you could mount this at an angle, other than modifying the wall section that it goes into. The edge of the speaker enclosure will be aligned with the wall surface, and that is that. You would have to modify the wall itself to modify the speaker''s firing direction. Something like adding a wedge to the wall, maybe., Which woudl be pretty hard to do so that it does not look weird.

When using this as a center speaker in Atmos setup, does it work well if I leave it flush with the wall? Other brand Center speakers have a mechanism to angle the driver up towards the listener level. or atleast the tweeter would be pivotable. This is missing in the monolith series.

BEST ANSWER: I left it flush with the wall, but I have it right below the bottom edge of my TV so it's not too low. This speaker has fairly wide dispersion, so I don't think you would need to angle it unless you had it closer to the floor.

Are there any plans for round in-ceiling atmos speakers in the monolith line? I want to build a 7.2.4 or 7.2.6 system, but I don't like the idea of square/rectangular speakers in the ceiling... just doesn't look good. Also, I haven't been able to find whether or not any of the existing Monolith in wall speakers will even work well as atmos speakers. Does anyone know if there is a planned expansion of the monolith line? And if so, when?

Pretty, pretty, pretty good
Bought these to replace some Micca 8" speakers I was using for surrounds and they made a noticeable difference. As in, I never noticed the sound coming out of the Micca speakers before and now these stand out. Especially when setting my system with multichannel stereo and playing music out of them. I'm considering buying 4 of these and using them for my atmos ceiling speakers, but they are so large I don't know that I'll have room to properly align them between the studs with my existing cutouts.

Good sounding HT speakers
A bit pricy, compared to non-thx certified monoprice speakers. They do sound great. I have them in the front and center position.
I am not entirely convinced that these sound a lot better than the (say) Monoprice alphas, which I have in the surround positioin. They are low impedance speakers 4-6 ohms, make sure your amp/receiver can handle it.

Excellent Speakers
After buying the bookshelf version of these speakers (THX-265b), in the interest of marital harmony I promised my wife to swap them out for in-walls (THX-265iw). I was nervous about buying these speakers due to the limited number of reviews and concerns that they would not get as loud as the bookshelf version, especially since I am using them in a large room which I do not believe these speakers are certified for. My concerns were unwarranted - these speakers are fantastic. They fill the room without distortion. I bought seven of them as part of a 5.1.2 setup and have only installed the front left, center and right, and am looking forward to getting the remaining speakers in place. I am very happy with my purchase.

Serious Overkill, Seriously Impressed
I had been very curious about these speakers since I came across them. I also thought they would be a great match as height channels for my thx speakers that are a different brand. So on Black Friday I pulled the trigger. These things are really well built. They have some serious heft to them with a metal frame, and an MDF baffle. As height channels they are complete overkill but they sound incredible and mix seamlessly with the rest of the channels. Ran some music through them also, just to see what they sound like and they are definitely the real deal. Very natural sounding and quite dynamic. You could definitely build an amazing home theater with this Monolith THX in wall line, especially if you step up to the 3-way LCR model for the front stage. Very happy I decided to go this route and they look awesome in my black ceiling with the grills off. Lastly, if anyone is interested they measured very well also. My ceiling is an open truss design so its wide open and not ideal for speakers but I got -3dB down into the 80s hz region, and the rest of the response was pretty flat considering the open ceiling. My previous in ceilings Klipsch/Polk measured horribly by comparison, especially the klipsch. Anyway, if these were installed properly in a wall or ceiling cavity I would imagine youd get a decent amount more extension than Im getting. So, I definitely recommend checking out this THX line, and would still love to hear what a proper 7 channel system made up of these sounds like.

Great speakers for Atmos
I purchased these speakers to serve as the Atmos channels to compliment my Klipsch THX Ultra system. They provide the kick I was looking for, as I was concerned that just an 8" woofer alone would not.
