I am interested in the Monolith THX Ultra 3-Way LCR In-Wall Speaker and the Monolith THX Ultra 3-Way In-Wall Speaker. I need to check compatibility with the studs in my house which are 16" on centers. What are the cutout dimensions for these speakers?

Sorry, however either the listed Spec's for the LCR are incorrect -OR- No, it will not fit in either direction (not it should matter, for neither of these speakers are intended to be turned 90 degrees, and instead they both should be left in their vertical position even when used as a Center channel speaker). If Monoprice / the Speaker designer feels differently, please do reply and let us all know..., for unless specifically 'designed' to be rotated on their sides (which both of these appear not to be), one ought not to). But again, Monoprice if you have further details for us all please do share. Thank you!

Short answer: actual cutout size is 13-3/4” width, and 15-5/8” height.
Why: Cutout size is smaller than overall dimensions which creates a lip. Without this lip we could not clamp the speaker to the existing Sheetrock. In my case, I built sealed speaker boxes behind the Sheetrock. The built-in clamps has no issue clamping both materials (1/2”mdf + 1/2”Sheetrock), as well I noted to total thickness the clamps can accommodate is 1-3/8”. HTH.

The template is marked "Template size: 461mm * 411mm, Frame Size: 441mm * 391mm"
One would assume the "frame size" is the same as the cutout size, but 391mm = 15.4" which is larger than the 13-3/4" you show - where did you get your measurements from?
Ideally (if you have one of these speakers) could you respond with actual measurements of both the cutout and the overall speaker?

If the cutout dimensions for the LCR Model 34366 are accurate, I understand the Frame Size: 441mm*391mm converts to 17.3622 x 15.3937 inches. 15 inches is a bit too wide for the available space between studs.

it should work fine with dog legs all the way out ..if needed you can always bevel cut the sheetrock where the dog legs are to give them a little wiggle room

Yes, 1" will work fine. I was able to use the dog legs for a 1.5" gap (added a 1" frame onto 0.5" drywall), but just barely.

looks to be 1 .125" between the dog and the frame. Worst case, the dog is plastic and could be cut down if really needed

Usually depends on how power/current you are pumping to the speaker(and in some longer runs distance could be a factor) I would recommend going with 12 gauge to future proof yourself if you get a bigger Amplifier down the road. Also, monoprice has some great deals and I got 100ft spool of pure copper 12 gauge speaker wire for 20 bucks on sale. It was cheaper than both 14 and 16 gauge spools at the time :D

Can I attach this product directly to the drywall or does it need to be drilled directly into the studs?
New User U
on May 10, 2020
BEST ANSWER: The speaker can be mounted directly into the drywall without using studs. There is a supplied template that you use to mark where you need to cut into the drywall. Be sure to place the template in between the studs. The speaker has mount arms which swing out from the periphery of the cutout which you make in the drywall. The arms clamp the drywall and hold the speaker against the wall. You’ll want to have at least one inch of space between the edge of the wall stud and the supplied speaker template.

It has "dogs" that rotate out and clamp the speaker against the back side of the drywall. It does not need any studs (and in fact needs clearance away from studs around each edge for the dogs to rotate out).

It can be attached to the drywall. Just make sure you have enough distance between the studs so the clamps don’t hit the stud.

BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure if anyone can answer for sure just yet. Monoprice may not have listed all of the various models in this THX line that are planned. As long as you sit 3-4 feet away from side and/or rear walls, you should probably stick with the THX-365IW's as side and rear surrounds as direct radiating is best for front, side, and rear main level surrounds with Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. If you sit closer than that, you should hope they come out with matching bipole surround models. As for in-ceiling's... I just don't know.

Hello! Could you please publish the measurements according to "Spinorama CEA 2034-A-2015 (ANSI)" standard?
These speakers look great with THX Ultra certification and you even started publishing a bit of measurements for the listening window. As you know that your horizontal dispersion is well designed, please provide the data in a proper CEA 2034-A-2015 (ANSI) graph to support the claim. Then these speakers will go on top of the recommendation list with probably unbeatable combination of objective measurements, price and design.

True, a review by James Larson at Audioholics could actually show the CEA2034 measurements. Strange thing is that you most likely have high quality CEA2034 graphs right now (as you did publish the listening window), but your customers will need to look at the certainly less optimal Audioholics measurements instead. Have a nice day!

Will there be a backbox available? Maybe things have changed but I know some of Atlantic Tech's speakers needed a backbox to be THX certified. THX certification notwithstanding, there are plenty of reasons to want a (prefabbed) backbox specific for your in-wall speaker. They'd be easy enough to make, but it'd sure be nice to have one available for purchase.

Since these in-wall's are an open baffle design, can you still put pink insulation between the studs in the wall cavity containing the speaker, or does the channel need to be completely open for optimal sound? I have a double wall constructed where the front speakers and screen would go and want to use Roxul Safe N Sound sound dampening rock wool material in most every channel in both walls, if possible, to minimize sound transmissions from the theater room to other flanking rooms.

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
Unfortunately we would not have any recommendations for the construction of boxes.
It would be best to reach out to an installer to get the best results for box construction in these situations.
Sorry about any inconvenience this may have caused.

These are rated at 100watts
Does that mean your 11 channel amp that provides 200 watts to the front three channels should not be used with these?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
You could use that amp with these speakers, their RMS wattage is 100 but they can reach 200W at max.
It is not recommended to go that high but as long as you don't run the risk of blowing out the speakers.

Is this suitable to be used a center speaker in a LCR format of a 5.1 system?

It can be used for that purpose but we would recommend using a center channel speaker specifically as your center.

Why? Is there a particular problem or reason not to use this speaker as a center channel?

Clean, Powerful Timber Matched THX Sound for Family Media Room
I added these as surrounds for my 5.1.4 system and am very glad I did. I am no audiophile but can appreciate the fuller sound compared to other shelf and in-wall speakers I have heard.
This was an easy purchase after adding other in-walls from Monoprice. These have a cleaner look than satellite speakers they replaced and removed my anxiety of having speakers in a multipurpose space (media room and kid play room).
I am very happy with the sound and consistent quality across all Monoprice speakers.
Setup:
Center: Monoprice THX-LCR
Left and Right: Monoprice THX-465IW
Rear Surrounds: Monoprice THX-365IW
Atmos Heights (x4): Monoprice Caliper 8-inch 3-way
Subwoofer: Monoprice THX 8-inch 150 watt sub

Terrific speakers
I installed these for my LCR in my media room. Was blown away by the performance of the speakers. I'm yet to do room correction on my AVR, but so far, very impressed with the speakers.

Very satisfied
These are sturdy and well built. They sound great, with what seems like a good flat response (they?re dialed in with Dirac - HTP-1 and monolith 11) and low distortion. They mount easily and look good. I painted the grilles black.

These are impressive
I have a nice pair of B&W speakers, but my toddler son recently figured out how to take their grills off - and loves to poke the drivers. I chose these as replacements that I could mount in-wall and out of his reach in hopes to have a cost effective solution that would be good still for movies and music.
I am happy with my purchase. I was not sure about a speaker without a cabinet or even a back pan, but these have great definition and a crisp but not crispy high end. I was careful when installing them, and I have a lot of experience installing professional speakers - but less so with home audio. I found the mounting system to be plenty strong and that it held the speakers firmly without issue in my walls.
The coverage pattern is plenty for any home audio environment I can imagine, and I did not find them to be fatiguing in any way when watching a whole movie or listening to a whole album. I would buy these again.
The only con I have for these so far is the magnetic grills don't seem to hold as strongly as some others Ive used in the past. They can sag a little over time if they aren't put on just so. It hasn't been a big deal for me yet, but I did want to note it.

Money matters and these speakers ROCK!
I can?t understand why people aren?t raving about these in walls. I have 7-365IW in my theater in a 7.2.4 configuration. They are powered with 350watts RMS running into all channels. The clarity, depth of sound and realism they create is amazing. I find myself playing them at reference level way more than i used to with my towers from another speaker line. Mainly because they are not fatiguing and so dang smooth. They are far and away the best bang for the buck speakers you can get for your theater. I have them paired with two 16? Ultra THX sub?s and they blend perfectly! My only recommendation is that you feed them lots of clean power from separate amps and you build sealed backer boxes with about .8cu ft. Stuff the cabinets with 3/4lbs. of poly fill.
I recently did some experiments with this method. I built one at.5 cu., one at 1.0cu., and my original .81cu ft. To me they seemed the most natural with the .81 cu. Can you buy better in-walls? Absolutely! But at what cost? If money didn?t matter I?d probably go with Focal or Triad, but money matters to me! That?s why i don?t think I?ll upgrade these speakers for a very long time. Monolith THX is Rocking the house!

Excellent Sound
Nice and heavy speakers with excellent sound quality. Impressed with the frequency range that these can reproduce. I was concerned that these wouldn't hold up to the tower speakers that wouldn't fit in my new media room but I am very happy with these speakers!
