I am interested in the Monolith THX Ultra 3-Way LCR In-Wall Speaker and the Monolith THX Ultra 3-Way In-Wall Speaker. I need to check compatibility with the studs in my house which are 16" on centers. What are the cutout dimensions for these speakers?

Sorry, however either the listed Spec's for the LCR are incorrect -OR- No, it will not fit in either direction (not it should matter, for neither of these speakers are intended to be turned 90 degrees, and instead they both should be left in their vertical position even when used as a Center channel speaker). If Monoprice / the Speaker designer feels differently, please do reply and let us all know..., for unless specifically 'designed' to be rotated on their sides (which both of these appear not to be), one ought not to). But again, Monoprice if you have further details for us all please do share. Thank you!

Short answer: actual cutout size is 13-3/4” width, and 15-5/8” height.
Why: Cutout size is smaller than overall dimensions which creates a lip. Without this lip we could not clamp the speaker to the existing Sheetrock. In my case, I built sealed speaker boxes behind the Sheetrock. The built-in clamps has no issue clamping both materials (1/2”mdf + 1/2”Sheetrock), as well I noted to total thickness the clamps can accommodate is 1-3/8”. HTH.

The template is marked "Template size: 461mm * 411mm, Frame Size: 441mm * 391mm"
One would assume the "frame size" is the same as the cutout size, but 391mm = 15.4" which is larger than the 13-3/4" you show - where did you get your measurements from?
Ideally (if you have one of these speakers) could you respond with actual measurements of both the cutout and the overall speaker?

If the cutout dimensions for the LCR Model 34366 are accurate, I understand the Frame Size: 441mm*391mm converts to 17.3622 x 15.3937 inches. 15 inches is a bit too wide for the available space between studs.

The dimension for depth is 3.8". How does this fit into a 3.5" depth of a standard wall with sheetrock on both sides and a 3.5" 2x4 in the middle?

BEST ANSWER: Hi Gerald, your sheetrock is either 1/2 or 5/8 so total depth from the front face of your sheetrock to the back side of the other wall is at least 4" deep. It should clear without any issues.

They fit in a normal stud cavity. with some room to spare behind them. Remember, the total depth of the opening is the 3.5" of the studs plus the depth of your drywall (usually .5")

Not a drop in replacement from the factory. The Amber is much smaller. However, I'm 100% certain with the right skills you can disassemble the THX, create a new faceplate in the same width/height form factor, lengthen the 4 speaker connection wires, shift the crossover electronics elsewhere, get creative with magnets, and leverage the Amber grill to polish it off. While your warranty will be void and the speaker will not be official certified reference anymore, the guts will be the same. I've seen it with my own eyes and heard it with my own ears. Good luck.

This is subject to your distance from amp to speaker, consider using a voltage drop calculator. As for the MAX capacity of the speaker terminals, I would not exceed 12awg. You will want to evaluate the connection at the other end as well, bigger isn't always better. How are you connecting to your amplifier or zone selector? Captive Screw Connector, Banana Plug, spring loaded terminal - these might be more restrictive than the speaker terminals. I've had great install experiences with 14awg and 16awg wires with these products.

BEST ANSWER: I'm not sure if anyone can answer for sure just yet. Monoprice may not have listed all of the various models in this THX line that are planned. As long as you sit 3-4 feet away from side and/or rear walls, you should probably stick with the THX-365IW's as side and rear surrounds as direct radiating is best for front, side, and rear main level surrounds with Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. If you sit closer than that, you should hope they come out with matching bipole surround models. As for in-ceiling's... I just don't know.

Hello! Could you please publish the measurements according to "Spinorama CEA 2034-A-2015 (ANSI)" standard?
These speakers look great with THX Ultra certification and you even started publishing a bit of measurements for the listening window. As you know that your horizontal dispersion is well designed, please provide the data in a proper CEA 2034-A-2015 (ANSI) graph to support the claim. Then these speakers will go on top of the recommendation list with probably unbeatable combination of objective measurements, price and design.

True, a review by James Larson at Audioholics could actually show the CEA2034 measurements. Strange thing is that you most likely have high quality CEA2034 graphs right now (as you did publish the listening window), but your customers will need to look at the certainly less optimal Audioholics measurements instead. Have a nice day!

Will there be a backbox available? Maybe things have changed but I know some of Atlantic Tech's speakers needed a backbox to be THX certified. THX certification notwithstanding, there are plenty of reasons to want a (prefabbed) backbox specific for your in-wall speaker. They'd be easy enough to make, but it'd sure be nice to have one available for purchase.

Clear Dialogue and Full Home Theater Sound
I added this as the center speaker for my 5.1.4 system and am very glad I did. I am no audiophile but can appreciate the fuller sound compared to other shelf and in-wall speakers I have heard.
This was an easy purchase after adding other in-walls from Monoprice. These have a cleaner look than satellite speakers they replaced and removed my anxiety of having speakers in a multipurpose space (media room and kid play room).
I am very happy with the sound and consistent quality across all Monoprice speakers.

Center: Monoprice THX-LCR
Left and Right: Monoprice THX-465IW
Rear Surrounds: Monoprice THX-365IW
Atmos Heights (x4): Monoprice Caliper 8-inch 3-way
Subwoofer: Monoprice THX 8-inch 150 watt sub

Reference Audiophile Hometheater speaker great for music too?
Unmatched audiophile quality for price! Clear dialogue, amazingly clean sound even at reference levels. These speakers love power so feel free to challenge their capability to your ear's content and more so with a Monolith sub!

Full and clear for home theater
These are perfect for our space. They sound very good. I did a head-to-head comparison with some slightly more expensive Sonance speakers and these won for clarify and mid-range. I'm using them for rlc with a Denon 3700 which is fine for home theater. However, our room is large and we need to run these just under reference volume for action movies.

Awesome
Have 3 of these in a LCR set up behind an woven acoustic transparent screen. Given these are 4ohm speakers I drive them with an emotiva amp hooked up to a denon AVR 3600h. I am currently running a 5.2.4 setup (detials bleow)
These things rock- sound quality for an inwall is amazing. SO much better sound quality than the caliper line which I have in my living room. I also think these sound way better than the freestanding 5-7 channel setups I have had previously (Klipsch, JBL and Monitor Audio) I know none of those are "high end" audio brands, but I think for 75-80% of the people considering buying these, thats probably a good reference point.
Install: Install was easy. These things are massive and there is not a lot of room on the left or right side in a 16in on center install. I was initially worried about this, and spent a lot of time finding the outside of each stud and making my cuts so that there was an equal amount of drywall on the sides for the anchors to latch onto. This was somewhat problematic, given it is very rare to have a perfectly straight and square 2x4 in your wall. However, after installing the first speaker, I realized that the top and bottom drywall anchors are more than enough to hold these in place so once I realized that, i didnt spend a lot of time messing around with the second and third speaker. . Given mine are behind an acoustic screen, I did not use the grills, but as others mentioned, they look great when they are installed. Two out of the three of mine needed to be bent in order to fit over the speaker as they came from the factory warped, but that was a pretty easy fix. These things are also very heavy for inwalls, so helpful to have a second set of hands in the install.
Sound quality - these things sound awesome. I use these strictly for watching TV and Movies, not for music, and they sound incredible as my front stage. Dialog is crisp and they just sound so much better than any other speaker (in wall or free standing) that I have ever had. My usual issue with surround sound is being able to hear the dialog clearly, mainly at low volumes but even at high volumes. I think this is a common issue, given most AVRs have a dialog adjust setting. . I am not sure if its the combo of these speakers with the denon & emotiva amp set up- but I have 0 issues now and dont even use the dialog adjust.
Overall a great speaker. I have never had any quality issues with monoprice before and have used several of their speaker lines. While this is certainly an upgrade over the caliper line, the increase in quality is aligned with the price difference. I was debating between these, Klipshch reference inwalls and glad I went with these for the front stage.. While I would have gone for a larger LCR inwall, I ended up getting a great deal on some Klipsch R 5660 speakers that I use for my side surrounds, while those sound great, work very well for my side speaker application and sound great with the monolith LCRs- they dont come close to the sonic clarity of the monolith LCRs in my opinion.

Big upgrade in sound quality
I got three of these as an LCR upgrade from the Caliber line of in-wall speakers and it is a big improvement. You don't have to be an audiophile at all to appreciate the difference. Even driving them with the same moderately priced Denon AVR, they are able to produce much higher SPL due to the lower speaker impedance. With the Caliber speakers, I had to dial back the subwoofer in order to not have the bass dominate the frequency response. Now I'm able to turn up the bass and still have everything sound natural.
The only negative I have noticed is that the magnetic grills don't seem to fit that well. Each of the three that I received are very slightly warped so that they don't sit flush against the wall. I have them behind an acoustically transparent screen, so I don't care that much, but if they were visible, it would probably bother me.

Seems to have richer sound than my Amber 3-way Center
While I'm not an audiophile and haven't spent a lot of time with this speaker, it does seem to add a fuller, richer audio "punch" to my center channel movie dialog compared to my now-replaced Amber 3-way center (product # 24431). I have all various Ambers in my 7.4.2 Atmos setup (minus this new center), and they seem reasonably compatible with this THX speaker (noting that I do not listen to music and wife and kids occasionally jest that I'm deaf).

As promised, the THX Certification delivers accurate, clear sound even at high volumes. Wouldnt expect this from an in-wall speaker.
So far, two things stand out to immediately after install and setup. The first, is the natural quality of the sounds. It reproduces audio in a way that, if you closed your eyes, you would think was really happening. The audio is very accurate. The second, is the ability to fill the room. One of my first pieces of audio I listened too was The Eagles Live Hotel California. I was able to close my eyes and I felt like I was there, listening to them on stage while being surrounded by the audience.
Im running these in a 5.1.4 Dolby Atmos configuration powered by a Pioneer Elite VSX-LX503, which is rated at 120 watts RMS, so a pretty decent match. These particular speakers are my front and rears, along with my center channel. On the ceiling, I have four Amber 8 speakers as my heights. My sub is the 12 ported Monolith, which just kicks ass with the speakers.
For just about 2700 in speakers, I have a great, hidden, home theater which Im willing to bet would rival most significantly more expensive setups. You wont be disappointed with these speakers.
