Do they have a mic?
A shopper
on Apr 18, 2021
BEST ANSWER: No. These do not contain a built-in microphone. These are comfortable, straight-forward, relatively "flat-response" headphones. Meaning, most people will find them to be lack-luster and without a hefty foundation. However, studio engineers will be pretty darn impressed (just give them about 5 our 6 hours of good break-in time).

those have better sound quality than monoprice retro ?????
A shopper
on Jun 24, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It depends on what your definition of "better" is. I own both but I think it's pretty safe to say that the 5C sounds better, although it has less bass than the Retros. But even though the quantity of bass is less on the 5C, the quality of bass is better (tighter and more controlled). However, if you are a basshead, the 5C might not have enough oomph for you.

I’ve never heard the retro cans. From what I’ve read and experienced myself with quite a few headphones I’m sure they are overall better. The HR-5C cans are very clear & clean sounding, no tinniness or cheap vibe. Be ware they are essentially studio monitor style for a sound profile, nothing is especially pushed or recessed. They are not heavy on the bass but what’s there is smooth. If anything they tilt towards the highs and mids but not overly treble rich. I imagine the retros don’t come off as high end but as with my other Monoprice headphones punch way above their price-point. Those retros sure look nice in pictures but I’ve never seen them in real life. The HR-5Cs are just as nice as they appear in pics.

Having used both, I purchased retros for my daughter, I'd have to say yes. In my opinion the HR-5C is more accurate in mid/highs, but can be overwhelming in bass. That's not to say that I didn't enjoy the retros. The retro is definitely not a cheap headphone in spite of the price, very pleasing. Finally, though I am enjoying the "5C", I probably wouldn't purchase another, but I would definitely purchase and reccomend retros. I would probably try a set of 560s or 1060s. The way Monoprice prices headphones one can be easily tempted to experiment.

I haven't used the Retro headphones. It of course depends on what you will be using them for. In my experience with the HR-5C they have a very flat uncolored response. They definitely don't have any kind of low end bump or enhancement, which is great for my purpose. If you are using them strictly to listen to music then you may find them lacking, as most people seem to like the enhanced bass that many headphones incorporate into their freq response.

I expect so but have not done an A/B test. I can tell you that, compared with other quality close headphones such as the Audio Technica M-50 series, these sound just as good or better, especially with respect to bass extension and lucidity of midrange instruments. The "retro" series, being "knock-offs" of AKG headphones of yore, are a different sort of headphone.

does HR – 5C work with iPhone? My boyfriend rides the subway and wants to watch videos.

BEST ANSWER: The headphones are compatible with iPhones that have a headphone jack.
Additionally, the headphone connector is thicker than most and may not be able to fully be inserted into the jack due to the case I had on my phone. I needed to replace the case and it worked fine.

He will need one with either a headphone jack or a headphone adapter, but it's just your standard headphone cord (the surrounding plug is somewhat thick in case that's an issue with how the jack is positioned).

They would work as long as he has the correct adapter. If his iPhone doesn't have a headphone jack then he would need one of the Lighting to Headphone adapters. He should have got one with his phone.

Sorry, that’s means nothing to me. DSP means digital signal processing. DSP means passing a digital signal through a process to alter the digital signal. These headphones are analog, right? Are you saying the FR of the headphones was tuned to flat? “DSP tuned” just means nothing when referring to analog headphones.

i bought these hoping to be able to replace the cord with something shorter for portability or in case of breakage, but i can't find a replacement cable anywhere, not 1.3m or 3m. i found a cable for brainwavz's hm5 headphones that looks like it may work, but that is the ONLY thing i could find outside of buying a feamale-to-male y splitter and a male-to-male stereo cable.
My questions are: can i buy a cable either of any length from monoprice? will the brainwavz hm5 cable work on these headphones? will my solution above of using a splitter and an extension work?
Thanks

Can the Monoprice HR-5C be run in balanced mode with a 4-pin XLR plug on the amplifier end and two 3.5mm (1/8") plugs on the headphone end? I'm assuming the plugs on the headphone end are 3.5mm and not 2.5mm. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Sound amazing, long cable, though they creak and make some noise
My only gripe about these is that when I use them for tracking vocals, they creak and make noise if I move too much. So if you're using them for that, take note! Otherwise wonderful, comfortable cans for pro audio.

Great cheap headphones
Great hjeadphones, remind me of the Brainwavez headphones I have but with a slightly different signature. Good sound stage and stereo seperation, bass can be a bit heavy but not bad. They are low impedance but drive better with an amplifier.

Quite good headphones for an unbelievable price. You might be annoyed by the two different connector points on the aux cable, but the fact that they made it removable makes up for that imo. Easy reccomendation.
