Does the software come with?
Louis A
on Feb 20, 2018
BEST ANSWER: The OS in the printer handles the functions of the printer including manual control of temperatures, extrusion, head movement and file reading. You will need to produce your design files (gcode) with other software. I use Sketchup for model design followed by Cura to produce the gcode that the printer needs to actualize the final model. Both of those are free to download and have reasonable learning curves. Other folks may have their own preferences. Plenty of information out there on YouTube etc to help decide which software you might prefer. The printer itself could be considered an 'entry" model - but I've had a blast with it and it performs very well with PLA.

The printer comes with an SD card that you can use to upload your prints. Included on the SD card is a setup file for Cura which is the software you use to slice models into g-code. So yes, if by software you mean the g-code slicer, it comes with the printer.

There is no slicing software specific to this printer. The option that is mentioned in the installation manual for this printer is Cura and is not included. You can download or use whatever program you want.

I have purchased 2 refurbished units, both are V1. It took less than an hour to unbox, level the bed and start printing. The quality of the print is super. There is not a lot of difference between V1 and V2, just the display board and hence the user interface. Wifi uploading of gcode files to the sdcard works great. After I did my first print with unit #1, I immediately went back and purchased a second unit. The first unit looked like new, both the printer and the packaging. The second unit styrofoam packaging was a little beat up but the printer is perfect, the printhead is clean, the print bead had a fresh install of masking tape, the display area and print head had protective tape on it. You can see these units were properly refurbished. No missing parts. I'm 100% satisfied, so I'm going to buy a 3rd unit for my wife to use :)

what software is needed to create projects ?
A shopper
on Jan 4, 2019
BEST ANSWER: You''ll need two pieces of software, both of which you can find free. The first is program to create 3D models. I am using Blender for that, but there are loads of others and I can't say that I find Blender to be particularly intuitive. The second is you will need software that can convert (aka slice) the 3D model into instructions for the printer. The mini SD card that ships with the printer has Ultimaker Cura on it, which works well for the purpose, though there are others.

To print something, you need a slicing software. There are many free options including Cura, Slic3r, and Matter Control. It tells the printer how it's supposed to move while printing something. If you want to design your own project instead of downloading a model that is already been created, you will need some sort of CAD software. Tinkercad is great for beginners, or fusion 360 is fairly simple to learn. I, personally, use Cura and fusion 360.

Does this unit use special brand filament, or will it take any filament?
A shopper
on Aug 13, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Any filament will work, providing it is 1.75mm in diameter. I've used the Monoprice ABS and it prints perfectly. With some adjustment to my slicer software config and an added Garolite bed sheet, I am able to print with nylon. Not one filament jam so far. I have not tried any of the new flexible filaments out there yet.

You can use any 1.75 diameter filament that has printing specs withing the Mini's capabilities. Some filaments require high temperatures, or can wear your nozzle because of their abrasive qualities. If you stick with something like PLA, you should have no issues.

It should be able to take any filament. However, quality varies between brands. I suggest reading reviews, but beware of filament with 5-stars but only a couple dozen reviews. I recommend believing the longer term products that have hundreds of reviews.

is it compatible with windows 3d printer?
A shopper
on Jan 10, 2019
BEST ANSWER: I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "windows 3d printer" but if what you mean is will it work with Windows that is yes. You can connect the Monoprice Select Mini via USB to a Windows PC using the Curia slicer program included on the SD card. You can then transfer files to the printer directly over the USB serial port. In short, to print an object you only need to have a *.gcode file type on the SD card and the printer will print it. Windows has nothing to do with the process at that point.

BEST ANSWER: I only use a Mac as well, and it works beautifully with this machine. I have a V1 refurb, and I must have already run about a mile of PLA through it
You will want to immediately download Ultimaker Cura.. It's free and it's awesome!. If you're into creating you will want to play with Tinkercad..
I bought this printer on a lark; I mean for $120 for a 3D printer? It was worth a gamble. I cannot believe the fidelity of the product it produces. I've had others with $500 printers guess that my toys came from a printer costing twice theirs. Seriously!

Vast majority of ppl use this printer either with microSD card or OctiPi, not their desktop/laptop.
So my answer is "yes" in that you won't use your mac. Many people use Cura to slice their models and it is available on the Mac. Active FB community, check out "MP Select Mini Owners" before or after you purchase for loads of help.

fine
Only capable of pla and struggles with that abs tpu etc are not possible. It runs pla nice but you need lots of adhesives to make prints stick. And the bed is not magnetic so any special build plate is out of reach. The bed and extruder are well under powered It only reaches 200 degrees and room temperature build plate. No matter how long i leave it i cant manage 210 and 50 degrees I also needed a larger fan to cool it and stop it from jamming. Although this seems like a lot of flaws they might be fixed in the v2 so go buy that one. Or for the same price i could recommend the ender 3. It has a much bigger build size, heats up quick and many people on youtube can agree. I like it but in the long run lasts but costs more to keep running.

Awesome little printer
Once it is leveled up, printed like a champ. It has its faults, but is so well put together that it is a perfect starter printer. Reminds me of a piece of lab equipment.
The UI is simple to a fault, but there are lots of connection alternatives for tuning the firmware. The display is easy to read. The control knob is small and can be a bit fiddly without modification. There are a lot of way to fix it and instructions are online.
The platform is small, but should be sufficient for many prints. Only issue I had was a defective power supply. Opened a ticket, and a replacement was sent quickly. New supply is lower amperage, but there appears to be no problem reaching and maintaining printing temps.

Overall its...okay, but it was used
Pros:- it was cheap - its small- can print mods for the device, with the device- tons of resources for modifications since this is olderCons:- my bed came warped in the middle- unit is dusty and rods did not look oiled and had hair and junk from whoever had it last- inside the unit is dusty and left me with QC questions about refurbished printers for the futureAll in all its a decent printer, I paid 89$ and I guess I got what I paid for : / It would be cool if Monoprice could help a guy out with some kind of replacement parts ; ) All the issues I have run into so far have mainly been due to the unit being used and not totally refurbed. Its a learning lesson in its own, I would suggest this to someone who has more experience than I did when I first ordered the mpsm v1. However, to any one who knows a little, do more research into modifications and all of the parts of a 3D printer and their function before jumping in, luckily for me I know electronic basics!

If you're even toying with the idea of 3D printing then quit thinking and just buy the darn thing. I promise you won't regret it.
But be warned that you will get the fever. I must have run a mile of PLA through this in the few months I've had it.
