Do the 7 port units come with LED power indicators for the individual switches?
Robert H
on Aug 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes they do!! Note: I use mine plugged in to ac power too, not just phantom from the computer. The LED is for each switch, and you press the button to power on and off. The LED doesn't automatically light up when you plug something in, you have to press the button for that port. I hope I was clear.

Yes, when individual switches are turned on there is a blue led indicator light where the numbers are approximately the color blue of the blue showing in the USB ports in the picture

This says "Switch" in the title. Can this be used to share usb peripherals between 2 computers (taking up 2 of the ports?). Seems this is just a HUB where you can turn individual ports on and off

This can only be used on one computer at a time. You cannot share this between two computers. By switch I think they mean that you can turn each individual port off or on.

Yes it will. As long as it is connected to the computer plugging in to this with a sinc cord would be the same as if the cord was plugged straight into the computer. Just make sure that the port on the hub is turned on.

On the other hand, I have used two of the 49 ft extender cables in series that Monoprice sells and that worked great to access an instrument in an environmental chamber from my desk..

Work without being plugged into a computer?
James H
on Aug 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi, hubs that comply with USB 3.0 (or 2.0) standards are not ideal for stand-alone charging without being connected to a computer. This is because USB standards have requirements for how power is handled so that ports only have minimal power until a device is detected. Without a computer connection, some devices will not charge at all, some devices may show slow charging only, and others may show charging status.
For a stand alone multi-charger, instead of this USB 3.0 data hub, products 13914 and 13915 would be better solutions. Thanks for checking.

Does this device send power through the USB port back into the computer?
I have USB fans connected to my desktop tower, that keeps it cool inside the nook that it's sitting inside. (I don't want the computer to overheat.) On some motherboards, the USB ports have separate power lines, while others, like my new Asus motherboard, seems to share them. What's happening is that with my USB 2.0 powered hub connected, my fans keep spinning, even with my PC power off. If I unplug the USB hub, they shut off as expected.
Will this hub send power back through the USB port back to the connected PC like my old USB 2.0 hub does?

BEST ANSWER: It might seem obvious but I miss it from time to time. Sometimes the on/off button for that port is inadvertently turned off as I use the hub with other cables for other items. Make sure the light is on. I have had mine for only 8 months and need to return mine for a warranty replacement. It just stopped working. So...this not may not be helpful. I like many Monoprice products, they are good designers, I just think there can be mfrg issues with keeping prices reasonable, and the QC in the faraway places where they are made is overlooked. ~TEU

BEST ANSWER: Hi, that is correct, based on USB 3.0 standards, USB hubs would usually have to be plugged to a computer to enable more current to charge mobile devices, otherwise the ports might only provide minimum power that won't be sufficient for charging. Using the hub in the way you described as a stand-alone charger is not ideal and could get mixed results depending on the mobile device. Some mobile devices might not charge at all, some devices could indicate slow charging only, and still some devices might simply show the device is charging (we got these results when we tested this setup with different devices).
For a stand-alone multi-device charger, the following products would be great solutions: 13915, 13914. Thanks for checking.

Not Happy
I've been using this hub for a couple of months now and I am mostly satisfied with it. However, I am mightily disappointed that one of the switches has already died.
I do not turn the switches on and off very often at all. I typically plug a device in, turn the port on via the switch, and get on with my day. The port stays on from that point until I remove the device from the hub. In this case, the device remained plugged in, but the port ceased to function. I tried turning the port ob via the switch, but the switch would not stay in the on position.
I hadn't used the switch on that port more than a handful of times, so its demise is quite disheartening and more than a bit frustrating. I was going to get a couple more of these, but that will not be happening now.

Worked great for a while
This worked for about a 6 months before one of the usb ports stopped working, so I just used the other 6.
Then another one went.
I think at this point I'm down to 4 usable ports. It's a nice device but would be nicer if all the ports still worked. I have mine mounted in a stable position on my desk, so I'm not mistreating the device or by any means pushing its limits.

OK - But Documentation is TERRIBLE
The first one of these I received did not work. That's fine, I understand these things happen, and Monoprice was great about swapping it for a working unit. The springy buttons are a little cheap and uneven - but what do you want for the price?
But really, the "documentation" (small card) that comes with the device is just AWFUL; A large portion of all the paragraphs in the instructions are cut off vertically - so it's all but useless. Luckily, it's fairly easy to figure out - but this is pretty bad Quality Assurance.

On my second one (warranty return)
Note: I have a lot of MP products.
This one just plain doesn't work. Multiple systems tried, multiple ports on each system. Doesn't charge anything, doesn't connect consistently, shutting off a port and turning it back on pretty much guarantees poor re-connection, and data transfer is just plain abysmal. Never try to use this for data. It drops connections again and again.
After the first one failed, I tried another (RMA from monoprice, so that was nice I guess). Same issues. Total junk.
Not worth the money. Don't bother at all.

Less than thrilled
I have a new mini Mac and the I/O ports have been "upgraded" to USB-C as the main I/O. There are two of the older USB 3 ports. The problem is I have more than two accessories that need the older USB 3 ports; keyboard, mouse, CD drive, backup drive, scanner, and photo accessories. This 7-port hub (model 21787) was going to solve the dilemma I had with the previous 7-port hub (model 14909) - wrong! The original hub I purchased was plugged into a USB-C port and when plugged into the hub, the keyboard, the mouse, the CD drive, and the scanner didn't work. A pop-up screen identified what the device was that was plugged in, but stated it didn't have any power, including the scanner that was plugged into the wall and power was on. However, devices that had integral memory did work; the backup drive and flash drives. The new 7-port hub (model 21787) plugs into one of the older USB 3 ports and was supposed to cure the problem I had with the previous hub (model 14909) because all connections were with the old erUSB 3. Wrong again, it was just like the previous hub. If the device has integral memory, it works, if it doesn't have integral memory, it just gets the error message about no power. I replaced the keyboard and mouse with wireless devices and they are working fine. It looks like I'll have to fire up the old Mac to use the CD drive, scanner and photo accessories. Not what I expected.
