I've read even when burying burial rated wire, it's best to still put them in a conduit. Is this necessary for this wire or can we bury it without a conduit?

BEST ANSWER: The NEC defines the interior of any underground conduit as a wet location. So the only benefits you would gain from running this cable in a conduit would be 1. You could pull in additional cables at a later date and 2. Physical protection of the wire from things like a weed whip, edger or shovel. That being said if you bury the cable 18” deep in a place where you KNOW is not subject to digging or edging etc than you don’t need a conduit. However any where that the cable emerges from the ground you would want to run the cable in conduit to provide physical protection vertically

Conduit is not required for this wire. This is very similar to Sprinkler Control wiring and low voltage lighting wire which are also direct burial. It is well insulated. I only wish it were black so that it is less noticeable when it comes out of ground to speakers.

this cable is used for low voltage applications, so no i wouldn't waste the time and cost to put it in conduit. I would only do that for a 120v or higher application for shock protection when digging.

What does this mean "stranded low voltage applications"? I am looking to use this to run outdoor speakers and the text of the wire says it is good for "burial rated outdoor speakers". Is the wire not good for all outdoor speaker setups? What is the actual voltage threshold that the insulation/wiring is not rated for? Where is the data sheet?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.
This would not be made to be in direct sunlight.
You would want to try using a speaker wire that is UV rated specifically.
