Is this adapter bi-directional?
I understand that if my computer has HDMI output port and a monitor has DVI input port, this adapter will work. But what about the other way around? I have a computer with a video card that only has a DVI output port and a monitor that only has a HDMI input port...will it work for this (assuming I use HDMI cable in between computer video card and this adapter)?
Thanks.

BEST ANSWER: My computer is dvi and monitor is hdmi. That is the way it works. It does not work if monitor is dvi and computer is hdmi. You will get a max of 60hz refresh rate.

Phil,
Thanks for your response.
>> It does not work if monitor
>> is dvi and computer is hdmi.
That's surprising to hear, because the item description here on the Monoprice website states, "This adapter can be used to connect HDMI® cables to DVI monitors, or HDMI® cables to older televisions that have DVI inputs."
In any event, I'm glad to hear from confirm you that it works the other way around (computer has DVI and monitor is HDMI)....as that is the use case I would be using this for Much appreciated.
Thanks.

Yes, this is a passive adaptor so it works in both directions. If your monitor has speakers you'll need to do analog audio and it probably won't do HDCP.

Yes, I am currently using this adapter exactly how you described: plugged into my video card with an HDMI cable running to my second monitor.

Does this adapter support UHD (HDMI 2.0)? I have a computer with DVI output that will support 3840x2160 resolution and a monitor (TV) that is 3840x2160 120Hz native. When using this adapter, the TV states "resolution not supported". I am wondering if this is an issue with the adapter, because the 1920x1080 settings do work just fine...

BEST ANSWER: This adapter would only support DVI-D Single Link which would be why you are only getting 1920x1080. DVI-D single link would be unable to support higher than 1920x1200.

Why doesn't picture match description? Item pictured is HDMI male, but description says HDMI female. Reading some of the comments suggests that picture is correct, and description is wrong. Which is it?

BEST ANSWER: The HDMI port in the picture is female. HDMI male ports are about 1/2 in long and metal on the exterior.

BEST ANSWER: The DVI spec does not support sound at all. To have sound and utilize DVI, you have to use a separate connection for your audio.

Does this work for 144hz monitors?
A shopper
on Dec 21, 2019
BEST ANSWER: No, a 144hz monitor requires a dual-link DVI connection to run at full speed. A passive device like this is only single-link adapter which will get you at most 1920 × 1200 @ 60 Hz.

Item specifically states that it is DVI-D Dual Link, and that it can be used to connect a DVI monitor to an HDMI video source. However, other questions and reviews seem to indicate that this is a SINGLE link and will not support resolutions over 1920x1080.
What is the truth, and if I want to use my IPS Zero-G monitor which only has DVI input but supports resolutions of 2560x1440 then what adapter do I need if not this one?

Works good but arrived bent
This DVI-D adapter does the job. We bought two to connect to our dual DVI video card and connected two 27" monitors to our PC. Only reason I can't give it 5 stars is because it arrived bent. The housing around the connector was bent in and I had to use my leatherman to straighten it before I could use it.

Useful and reliable, but price more than doubled.
HDMI cables are much cheaper than DVI. At one point it made sense to buy only HDMI cables and use these adapters. Certainly it was better than a dedicated DVI-HDMI adapter cable. But since the price has gone up from $2.93 (2020) to $7.49 (2021) it's no longer so clear cut.
