I'm having issues getting 2.0 compatibility to work. I have the device plugged into a 2.0 port and the extra power cable plugged into the adjacent 2.0 port. I have a simple usb flash drive at the far end as a test. Windows does not detect anything. If I swap the device to a 3.0 port (no extra power cable), everything works. Any ideas? could I try an external USB power source (cell phone charger)? are the pinouts the same? I may not always have a 3.0 port in my application.

You likely have both the device and the extra power cable plugged into the same USB controller. That controller may not be able to provide enough power. Your suggestion of trying the external power source makes sense or you can try the 3.0 port for the extra power and see if that works. In the end, what solution did you find?

I used this cable with a power hub on the female end, but had to place a USB 3.0 card into the computer. After that, cable work very well.

Does this item include the USB power cable/adapter pictured? Is this power required?

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it needs the power to run the fiber optic circuits at the far end and has some thin copper wiring that acts as a sheath of sorts for the fiber.

Does the USB power injected at the transmitting end allow the use of a powered device at the receiving end, or is the power just for the optical extension?

If this is an optical cable, it would need power on the female A side for the receiving device. I don't see any power inlet on the female. How does this work? Will it only connect to a hub? You can't send power over an optical cable.

BEST ANSWER: While the main transmission is done over optical, there are supplementary copper lines that provide power to the female transceiver. It won't be enough power to use for USB BUS powered devices, so we would recommend connecting to a powered hub that could then distribute power to the connected devices.

Is the 5v 900mA power delivery to the device only possible with external power input? Otherwise, how much power is available through bus-power to the end device? I need just under 10mA to my end device (DSLR camera) to function properly.

Will this work with a typical USB Gaming Headset without needing a separate powered hub?
A shopper
on Jun 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Hi, yes this should work as long as your gaming headset complies with USB standards for power draw (you can test this by connecting your headset directly to your computer to see if it works). When used with USB 3.0 ports and devices, this cable can deliver 5 VDC up to 900mA, and up to 500mA for USB 2.0.

I have this cable connecting my office PC to a powered USB 3.0 hub in my living room. The female end gets quite hot with just the hub, and IR receiver, Xbox wireless adapter and Logitech K400 Plus touchpad keyboard connected. It's in a well ventilated cabinet and exposed to airflow on all sides. Is this normal? I am not using the power adapter.

Overheats and then fails
I'm on my second product replacement. Good news Monoprice has good warranty program. Bad news I paid 300$ for two cables and they don't work for more than a couple months at a time...
Will look at using a USB 2.0 active cable instead.

Doesn't quite do what I need it to
I have my computer stashed away in a closet and 32.8ft was a perfect distance away. I believed this was a great alternative to purchasing a fiber thunderbolt cable and dock system much like LTT did. However, when I hooked up a powered USB 3.0 hub from Anker it would not accept any more than 4 devices at a time. Those devices were mouse, keyboard, usb mic, and a dac/amp combo. Then some time after that the dac/amp combo started malfunctioning and threw errors in Windows. I have also tried to plug in a graphics tablet it would not be recognized as well as any flash drives that I owned. I have since changed to an active usb 2.0 cable offered by monoprice and that has been working like a charm. This cable was a good idea in theory but there were a lot of limitations.

Solid Product
I am very satisfied with this product. It works well with multiple Supper Speed USB 3.0 cameras I have connected to it. A competitive device I purchased before that did not work consistently and would drop the connection. This product is consistent, works great, and is very well constructed. I've now purchased three more.
