They are true over the ear and seal against the sides of the head. The noise cancelling works extremely well considering the price, and the build quality makes you wonder how they make money on these. I’ve been using my pair for around six months now with no issues. They’re a great bargain!

"Over the Ear" is ambiguous. I've been fooled by that term by Sony before. Are this "On" the ear or "Around" the ear? I'm looking for "around" headphones where the pads are on your skull, not the ear.

The earpads are on your skull, not the ear, unless you have huge jugs. The inside cup measures 2 1/2" x 1 5/8", and fit me just fine, very comfortable and sound great. My only complaint is that they don't really turn up and blast the way you might like, because loud music is apparently bad for you and modern products assume we aren't able to make decisions for ourselves. Overall a nice set.

Do these come with a carrying case?

BEST ANSWER: No, they do not. A mini cable is included, but no case or other accessories. They are a kick ass pair of headphones for 1/6th the price compared to any of the major brands (I.e. Bose or Beats) with similar features (I.e. Bluetooth and noise cancellation) though so a case is of little concern.

The headphone comes with an USB cable and 1/8" cable. The 1/8" cable should work on all airplanes but cannot be used to charge the headphone. However, the USB cable can be used on more up to date ones and can charge the headphone at the same time. I have not seen any airplaine supporting bluetooth. The pairing would be a problem. It is not the best headphone I have seen, far from that. But, its size, cost and versatility make it a good choice for travelling. I have bought another one for me and one for my wife.

How is the quality of the headband and the swivel connecting the ear cups to the band? What is the material at these 2 points? I have a larger-than-average head size and I've had plasticky headphone snap, usually in the middle of the headband or right at the joint of one of the ear cups.

BEST ANSWER: I've had my headphones since November 2016. To date I haven't experienced any negative issues. Like you, I too have a larger than average/normal size head. I use mine almost solely outdoors: lawn, garden, minor home repairs, etc... I am and was surprised of the quality of the headphones. They fold up rather nice and can be placed back in their carry bag, although I leave mine out and in a charging state so they can be ready to go instantly. If you are concerned about breakage, I do not believe that to be an issue. They ear muffs extend a nice distance, which is nice since I wear a hat or cap and it fits over them for a snug fit. As for the material covering the ear muffs, it feels like a very soft leather that has held up this far without peeling or cracking, unlike my Bose headphones. I have no issue recommending these headphones and if the situation arose, would purchase a second pair, which I may do for my spouse.

It is difficult to tell what material the head band is made from. It is covered with foam and a soft nylon type material. The extensions on the headband are made from aluminum and appear to be very rugged. The swivel is very durable as well. I think this is a very good headset for the price. Noise cancelling works well also. I use them
M for my airplane trips. Bought them over six months ago and have not had any problems at all. I think you will find this headset to be higher quality.

METAL on METAL. Let me repeat. METAL and not brittle paper-clip cast-junk. Not Plastic on Metal. Metal on Metal. Quality. Good. Metal. VERY nice. These are exceedingly well built.

Is the microphone usable when connected to a PC (not a phone) via Bluetooth?

This item does not have an integrated microphone. I don't see why using the headphone jack would override the use of a microphone in a computer, although I have not tried the latter.

Can the noise cancelling be active without actually listening to music? For instance, if I just want to cancel out surrounding noise (like a tv in the other room or noise on the train)? Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: Yes. There is a switch on the left ear that controls the noise cancellation. You can wear that with just that turned on and it will definitely cancel out some but not all noise.

Noise cancelling headphones work best when the noise is constant, like on a plane or train, or a factory floor, or when you're near constantly loud machinery, like in a server room. They do a lot less well with variable 'noise' like a TV in another room. In fact, you may find that you hear the TV more clearly with the headphones on. The first time I used noise cancelling headphones, I was very surprised to find that while the airplane noise was substantially reduced, I could now hear quiet conversation four or five rows away from where I was sitting.

These headphones seem to only cancel out certain frequencies. I can definitely still hear sounds, some constant, with the headphones on with ANC. They are a good value for the money. I tested these against the Bose ANC at Costco. The Bose were only slightly better but at over 4Xs the price the Sonicsolace are a much better value.

Monoprice SonicSolace Active Noise Cancelling Bluetooth Wireless Over the Ear Headphones, Champagne with Tan
BEST ANSWER: As Martin S said, the pads are removable by twisting a plastic tab that holds them onto the cup. The pads themselves are glued on to these plastic tabs. By the time you need to replace them the glue will most likely have hardened a bit, making the pads easier to remove. I did so and replaced them with after-market velour pads as pleather gets a bit too hot for me.

BEST ANSWER: I use this headset for my commute to work five days a week. I run them for an hour a day and usually with no noise canceling running. I can go over two weeks before I have to charge the headphones. Like I said I rarely use the noise canceling feature so I do not know how fast that feature will drain the battery.
