Do I need a headphone amp?
A shopper
on Oct 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: An amp would be best, yes. This pair of headphones requires more power than any source (like your phone or computer) can provide, meaning while an amp isn't necessary, you can't get the full sound without one. If your are avoiding spending the money on an amp/dac, you could always get one of the other Monolith series headphones that require less power, though in my opinion, its worth it to save up and splurge on these with an amp

I would suggest yes but first use the headphones with the sound system you plan on using it. If they headphones are not sound enough then find an appropriate amp. I purchased one from Monoprice but had to return it because it was not loud enough. Good Luck and Happy Listening.

Not 100% sure but that should depend solely on the cable. If you can get a balanced cable with the right terminations it should work since the only diff between balanced and single ended would be having separate ground wire for left and right drivers

Does Revision 2 of the M1060 still have the ringing sound at 5kHz?
A shopper
on Apr 26, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I have heard a lot about the ringing problem, but I have not experienced this at all. These are incredible headphones and many of us who have purchased them would be quite upset if we heard "ringing". Look up "Z review" on this headphone. He doesn't hear it either. DMS TV did an initial review where he praised them to a superlative degree. Then later he apparently heard the ringing and started modding them till they broke. My question is; Where is your credibility? Where was this ringing when you gave the glowing review? I think that Audeze LCD2 purchasers and some reviewers just don't want to give the M1060's the credit they deserve. I have music that I have listened to for over 30 years. I know my music very well. I would notice any additional "ringing". It would be a definite deal breaker for me if I did. These are great headphones for great price! I highly recommend them.

It depends on the type of music you listen to. In acoustic music (classical, or live recordings), you shouldn't hear anything unpleasant, ever. If you listen to a gene that's always studio produced (pop, hip hop, rap) and highly processed you might, but I don't think it's the headphones fault., rather I think it's because engineers boost these frequencies as people who listen to this type of music don't usually listen on higher quality gear. Anyway, unless you try them you'll never know if they work for you. Thankfully Monoprice have a very liberal return policy. Good luck.

I don't have objective measurements, but I hear a mid-treble resonance that is particularly excited by vinyl surface noise. "Tic" sounds end up sounding like "tac," so impulse decay isn't as quick and clean as it should be.

What are all the changes and improvements in the second batch?

BEST ANSWER: Without disassembling them you can't see what they did, but the head strap attachment was strengthened. The wood has been fully treated inside and out to stop cracking. The outer grille is finished better. The connectors have been changed to 2.5mm jacks for greater durability. The cord itself has been lengthened for more freedom of movement. Basically, every issue has been addressed and seemingly resolved without raising the price a penny.

The grills aren't as sharp. They're rounded out much more smoothly. The MMCX connectors are now a 3.5mm stereo angled connector to dual 2.5mm mono connectors. The wood is nicely finished and doesn't crack. Or it hasn't yet, but I live in Texas and it's pretty humid here.

BEST ANSWER: Much better (I have both). Although the ATH-M50 sound good and can be easily powered by a Dragonfly Cobalt for travelling, the M1060C is fantastic after burn in and a minor mod. Most IEM mmcx cables are only 4ft so I would recommend either buying a Shure headphone cable (they use the same connectors) or buying a custom made mmcx cable from a custom manufacturer with the length you want. Just get anything with mmcx connectors (for the M1060 itself) and have the other end terminate however you need.

I would recommend that you do not do this. It will seriously change the response curve of the 'phones. I find that the "transparency" of the planar drivers in this headphone is so good that I tend to listen at much lower volumes than my other 'phones (which are also open back). Try turning it down.... this might fly with your family. Not so much at work.

Yes, indeed, the ear cups articulate freely in the yolks, much like the HD280's(I had these in the past). Their motion is only halted once the cables touch the top of the yolks...which makes for nearly 180 degrees of spin. Hope this helps.

These headphones are pretty easy to drive. I can drive them with my iPad mini to pretty loud levels. However, a headphone amp is probably better to get the best possible performance. These are much easier to drive than the T50RPs which I also have.

Will the Monolith be compatible with aftermarket earpads (like those for the Audeze LCD-2, for example) ?

BEST ANSWER: Yes they are compatible with Audeze and ZMF Eikon pads. Go with a suede pad. Though the stock pads are comfortable you'll get better sound (imo) with a suede pad.

Who is building this for Monoprice, shouldn't be hard to figure out, as there are what, like 3 or so manufacturers of planar headphones in the world? Fostex, Hifiman, Audeze, and I am already running out of names.

BEST ANSWER: They are fairly neutral, but has some of the best planar bass i've experienced! plenty impact, hits low on bass boosted tracks, and short of a bit of 5khz treble spike its quite easy to listen to overall. The mid's is the second strong point where its intimate while still being airy with good imaging. Unlike the Audeze house signature being extra veiled/recessed.

These headphones make you understand why the iFi iDSD Black Edition has the XBass and 3D+ switches. Most headphones are not as neutral as these are. I also consider these to be very accurate. Flipping those switches on certain music types is an incredibly joy with these headphones. Sorry for the slight digression. No, iFi did not pay me for this answer and David C's answer is better than mine. =)

This may seem like a ridiculous question, but just received mine, and I cannot find ANY indication of which jack is L or R. The cable (the newer dual 2.5mm cable) is labeled "L" and "R" but the headphones themselves show no sign of which side is Left or Right....no manual was included with mine. Who to tell which is L and R?

The dragonfly will drive these ok, but they'd benefit from a higher powered amp. There's only so much power that can be driven from USB alone.

Dont go crazy
At this level of quality/capability of sonic reproduction, i think its important to remind producer-based consumers to firstly, not use EQ-correction on these headphones and to trust the sound, but to also work at a fixed volume. Meaning: set a volume and dont change it. With these headphones, phenomenal mixes are actually possible for once, that arent possible (for me at least) on dynamic driver headphones of even the highest class (which i have great experience with).

My biggest concern was fitting my head. These fit perfectly w/o any problem whatsoever! The way the swivel works on both sides of the headphones makes sure they'll fit anyones head. My only second concern was how good would the magnetic planer technology work when listening to HD music. And, again, it was perfect as if these were built specifically for dolby atmos or spatial audio. Thanks monoprice for raising the standard and giving a great product and a great experience.

A miracle
These are not a pair of headphones. These are a miracle. Once you dress it you will never do a mix without. You will discover sounds that you didn't know there was hidden in your song. Incredible stereo panorama, all sound appears clear and true. With this headphones my mixes are becoming adult with a quality I had never reached before. If you are mastering or mixing your music don't think but buy it! You will never use other headphones for mixing or mastering. I'm so in love with this headphones that I will buy a second pair to make a gift to my brother.

I'm Pleasantly Surprised (One Hour Review)
At how quickly the headphones shipped and were delivered. I ordered on a Saturday afternoon and received the headphones early Tuesday morning.
At the simplicity of the unboxing. I like having a case for my new headphones. Take them out, plug them in, and you are on your way. Someone might wonder which cup is left and right so that you get the terminals plugged in correctly, but you'll figure it out. I didn't spot any markings on the headphones.
At the perfect fit right out of the box. They are a tiny bit heavy and the clamping around my ears feels a bit tight after my first hour of use. I get uncomfortable in every headphone I use after an hour, though. Maybe the head strap could be softer. I'm starting to notice it, but not terribly. It's nothing I can't get used to.
At their beauty. I think the wood is an attractive touch.
At the sound. I'm using the M1060s with my Tidal App-HiFi, Dragonfly Cobalt, and an iPad. They sound clear, and natural. I'm enjoying the experience. There is plenty of bass in my opinion. The sound is what I expected from a planar. Last year I demoed several planar magnetic headphones. They were all far more money than I was willing to pay. Had these M1060s been on the menu, I would have bought them without a second thought.
At my conclusion. The M1060s are what I was hoping for to serve my limited use cases. I will listen to music at home and occasionally plug them into my PS5 controller. For everything else, I'm happier to use my light in-ear monitors.
I hope this helps you. For a few hundred dollars, the Monoprice return policy and warrantee, you have little to lose.
Me: I have a vocal performance degree, and sang and recorded professionally with a jazz band.for many years. I have terrific ears but am sensitive to the high price if diminishing returns. I hear no need to drop $1700.00 on another planar.

Unparalled sound, sensation, and support under $600
I have not found better sounding headphones to my ears under $600, and I tried over a dozen from $200-600 only to pick these. Details at the end!
- Soundstage is decent for an open back, far above the IEMs and closed I've tried. The HiFiMan Sundara is a bit better.
- Imaging is the best I've ever heard. Every instrument and noise feels distinct if the mix gives them even the slightest chance to. I pick up new subtleties to songs I know well, and it's lovely.
- Bass is incredibly fast, accurate, and detailed. One of the best parts of this headphone. May require EQ to add a little "quantity" though. Good sub-bass extension.
- Mids are lively without sounding unnatural. I'm a huge fan of music with heavy gain and distortion in the upper-mids on guitar, and this sounds great. Vocals aren't my focus generally, but zero complaints.
- Highs are only very slightly sibilant if at all, something I'm pretty sensitive to.. Detailed - that might be this headphone in a word. Not quite as nice as the Sundara, but it's been a while since I compared them and the details escape me.
I listen to many genres, but find these particularly ideal for progressive and melodic death metal, as well as most metal generally.
They are a little heavy and a little hot, but still very comfortable for long sessions.. Wonderful size for my big ears. They don't clamp too much out of the box and do so less over time, perhaps too little.
A decent chunk of power is required, but nothing crazy. Scarlett audio interfaces drive these well at ~70% gain, but phones and most computer outputs will struggle to provide enough juice for a full sound on these huge drivers, despite a reasonable 50 ohm resistance.
These are not portable.
They leak sound by design, to increase the soundstage, and at preferred listening volumes it's about as loud to others as a moden iPhone on 1/3rd speaker volume.
The build/durability (and the goofy-huge case) are the weakest points. Still, the amazing sounding earcups have their own 2.5mm inputs, so you could definitely make your own mount and I have heard of this being done.
I used these for over 2 years in a fairly hot environment. I handled them fairly carefully, though had one or two soft three-foot drops onto carpet. One of my cup mounts gradually came unglued, and I was unable to reglue it. Soon after the pleather covering the other earpad's foam came undone from the wood and metal. The cable developed kinks as well. Monoprice support was so friendly, they volunteered warranty service and provided shipping and a fast, apparently new replacement unit. They clearly mean their 5yr guarantee, it's wonderful to see and stirred me to write this review.
In short, these are my #1 recommendation under about $600 to anyone who loves listening and can fit these in a budget with a $30-80 DAC+amp. Auditory bliss can be found in these cans.
