Is this "Active Curved" antenna omni-directional, somewhat directional, or highly directional?

BEST ANSWER: I would think highly directional. It is placed on a table inside a room with Two additional windowed wood and stucco walls of another room on one side and a full duplex on the other side and it works flawlessly.

I wouldn’t say highly directional. But it may be more than somewhat directional. We live about 40-50 miles from the signal source. We have the antenna on a stand and rarely have to move it. If it gets bumped it still picks up a signal. However if you’re mounting it to a wall it may not be work as well. I bought one for each of my parents televisions. They have to sit at an angle that would not allow wall mounting. If you plan to mount to a wall, it may present a challenge if it’s not facing an angle that allows for the best reception.

My experience is at least somewhat directional. There is a range of direction where certain stations could be received, and not super narrow. But it is definitely directional and has to be facing in the correct direction. The less it is right on target, the more interference is experienced, such as people or objects moving in front of it.

Definitely not omni-directional. I'd say somewhat directional. I definitely have to move it around to get certain channels, and then others drop off. I haven't found one perfect direction for all channels in my area. And then I get drop-outs when the train goes by... :-) But, it still works pretty well - better than the one I had before.

I've found it to be highly directional, we live about five miles from several towers, and one is several degrees off from the others and the antenna has one sweet spot for that channel. If you're further away from the towers it is probably somewhat directional.

This antenna is by no means unidirectional. I have found that changing it's orientation from horizontal to vertical makes a huge difference and rotating it 2 degrees makes a substantial difference in reception

BEST ANSWER: There is an included “leg” (black piece on the bottom of the picture). It makes the antenna stand on a flat surface. The antenna does bring in stations near me but only reaches 2 of the 3 network stations. I am moderately satisfied but there must be a better way.

Is this paintable?
A shopper
on Dec 9, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No antenna should be painted. All dings, bends, or any other modifications may alter the reception of the device in a negative manner. The type of paint used is irrelevant. An antenna not only directly receives signals, it also reflects signals into the sensing element. The components receiving aspects of an antenna are cut to specific sizes to ensure maximum performance.

Ideally the manufacturer would answer this question, but as long as you don't use a metallic or an older lead based paint and one that doesn't dissolve the outer plastic (test a little section on the back first) I think it would be paintable. I plan on painting mine when I change my wall color.

Not advisable to paint, it will affect the receiving characteristics of the antenna especially if the paint has metal particulate in it. Also the solvents in the paint may not be friendly to the plastic compromising the integrity of the antenna.

I hope so since that's where mine is, only time will tell how well it holds up. It does not have very good mounts if you're thinking pole. But it has 2 slot holes to allow you to mount it to a wall or other flat surface. It has a pretty thin lead with a male f connector rather than the typical female f connector mounted directly to the unit, I worry about that thin wire more than anything else. As for reception it can't be beat for a unit this size.

Where should I mount the antenna?
A shopper

BEST ANSWER: The TV towers I need to be able to see are largely due South of me and the location of my primary TV is near a picture Window on the South aide of the house and I live on a South-facing slope so it was an easy choice for me, use the included support leg provided to just put it on the entertainment center next to the TV with the backside pointed South. I did find that having the white convex surface point into the room, making the backside act like a concave reflector pointed South gave me the best reception/signal strength.
Generally speaking, having the concave side point in the direction of where your primary TV signals come from is likely the best, positioned high enough to minimize any line-of-sight obstacles. But if you get signals from a variety of directions then you might want to try pointing the convex (white) side towards the average azimuth between your various signal sources. And if that is your case, you may find yourself needing to reposition the antenna for optical signal when you want to watch a particular channel.
But as I said, in my location I have it sitting on a countertop and never need to touch it. It's small enough that it isn't an eyesore - it has a clean and efficient look to it and blends in well with other items on the same countertop.

I tried it with and without the provided amplifier. The amplifier does not seem to have provided significant results. Not enough to satisfy my expectations. I hooked up a professional 15DB amplifier and received impressive results. Then I connected a vintage 25DB "Mast amplifier" that I found in the attic. That one looks like a winner! You may want to search on line for a 20-25 DB low noise amplifier and hook such between the antenna and the TV set, instead of the provided amplifier. May I add that even as a passive antenna, that HD5 is a nice deal.

Does the weather/cloud cover affect reception? It was working really well in one spot and then it lost reception of 2 local channels.
Clarice W
on Feb 27, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't think the cover affects reception, it's just plastic. It's more likely that the density of certain parts of a wall will block stations (using a stud finder will REALLY help with placement), and weather conditions sometimes cause the strength of the signal you are getting to change, especially if it's already at a tipping point. Check the strength of your signal. These things can be very tricky sometimes. All in all, I found it difficult to mount, but that's just my physical situation in this room. There's a great FCC website that will tell you exactly which stations are reaching you well just from your address. It automatically calculates your latitude and longitude and altitude, asks how high you are above ground level, and which way you are facing. Otherwise the weather/cloud cover probably shouldn't affect it at all. Signals from satellites can interfere big time.

To fit in the space where I want to locate it. I don't understand how it fits into the stand and my original question might not have been clear. I do not need the stand to be vertical, only that the orientation of the antenna itself have the long side vertical and the short side horizontal.

Can this be mounted?

BEST ANSWER: Depends on how handy you are and what you mean by mounted? Indoor? Outdoor? Not sure I would put this outside as it is weather resistant, not weather proof. You would need to modify the support arm in order to mount it to something or use the mount arm socket connection on the actual antenna and make a bracket for it and then mount it to whatever you are trying to mount it to.

What is chemical referred to the warning label? Says may cause cancer

BEST ANSWER: If your TVs are old enough that they are not digital-ready, then you will need a digital-to-analog converter box to take the digital over-the-air TV signals and convert them into the old analog signal that your TV can accept.
Also double-check that you have the power supply properly connected to the little black box, and the antenna and TV each connected to the proper coax ports on the box.

Monoprice Active Curved HD5 HDTV Antenna, 60 Mile Range

Monoprice Active Set Top HD4 HDTV Antenna, 60 Mile Range
BEST ANSWER: I live about 20 miles from the location in Eastern New Orleans (Paris Avenue) where most of our local TV Transmitters/Antennas are. I was able to get a clear picture on our bedroom Toshiba TV when the flat, front surface of this antenna was facing east towards the towers. But when I rotated the antenna 90 degrees to fit on the shelf hidden behind the TV, signal strength dropped significantly. If all or most of your TV towers are in the same compass direction and you are close enough geographically, then this will probably work for you. But if your TV towers are scattered in different compass directions and/or if you need to conceal the antenna, then be aware that the directional nature of this antenna may lose some TV channels for your application.
