Does this need to be plugged in to a router directly, or can you connect it via an existing Ethernet outlet. I need more Ethernet outlets in a room that is on a different level to where the router is?

BEST ANSWER: This device is a network switch and can be connected (for more ethernet ports) to an existing router port via an ethernet cable (or ethernet outlet connected to a router). Hope that answers your question clearly enough.

Does this have to be plugged in directly to a router, or can it work when connected via an Ethernet cable from that router?
A shopper
on May 9, 2018
BEST ANSWER: This is a simple switch, which means you can connect it directly to any configure router via a straight through Ethernet cable (RJ45), to give you more output. In a normal setup:
DSL (or cable) Modem box buy, configure and connect to Router connect to simple switch to get more output
If DSL Modem box has built in Router then configure built in router then connect directly to simple switch to get more output
If use cable Modem box without a built in router then buy, configure and connect router then connect to switch to get more output.
Note only add a switch if and only if you need more output, because your router does not have any output slot left. Use the last output slot to add in the simple switch to get more output
A simple switch is like the power plug bar, the more power plug bar you add the more power slot output you have to connect to. Just keep on adding more switch in your network and you get more output to connect to the network you have setup (via the router).
I hope this helps.

The question you ask is kind of confusing ... so I'll answer it with the description of my setup.
I have a single Ethernet cable running from my router in the basement to a office/bedroom on the next story up. I needed another wired connection and instead of running a second cable I used this device.
The cable runs from the router to this device and I have 2 other devices plugged into 2 of the 5 ports on this device.
You can think of this as a splitter for the single CAT cable. This device is unmanaged. With a managed device you can access the device and control things like which device attached gets a faster speed, etc.

The switch box connects to the router by an Ethernet cable and then you can connect your devices to it by other Ethernet csbles. The switch is powered by plugging in to a wall socket. Mine does this from my Apple AirPort WiFi router to the switch-from there I have 3 devices connected to the switch.

The switch is connected to the router by an ethernet cable. This will give you four additional ethernet ports.
It comes with it's own power supply. The only connection between the router and the switch is the ethernet cable.

This device does not produce its own IP address like that of a regular router. It’s main function is to be able to split internet from one source. Therefore, this can be plugged into a router or Ethernet wall jack.

Yes there are "keyhole" slots for mounting either direction (cable up or cables down). Small screws with maybe a 5mm head.

That would be dependent on your ISP and MODEM. Some MODEMs can only assign a single IP address and will not talk to two routers. Some ISPs will only provide a single IP address, without an extra fee.

Do you have to plug the power cord into an outlet for this 5 port switch to work? Awesome for the job
I just need a small hub, really as an extension to an existing cable that didn't quite reach where I need it to, but the hub was cheaper than a cable that was the length I needed, and gave me a couple additional ports so I could avoid using wi-fi if I needed to..

Very small footprint, works just as expected.
I needed this switch to setup some VOIP desk phones. I didn't need gigabit, but I needed it to be cheap. Well what I got was something I didn't expect. Cheap and TINY! This switch takes up no room at all. This is great! This is perfect for those that have very limited space. It seems to operate fine, and I've noticed to change in network performance. This is another quality product from monoprice.

Monoprice 5-port Ethernet switch - works very well and a good price
I purchased two of these to expand my Ethernet home network (my router has only 4 ports). They worked perfectly both at the router end and also at the TV end where I placed another one to run my TV, Fire TV, and a plug-in Ethernet cable for my laptop.
