My monitor has a DVI-D port which looks different than the port on this adapter (the DVI-D port doesn't have holes for the 4 pins on the right, only a single horizontal slot.) Will this adapter accommodate DVI-D, or only DVI?
A shopper
on Oct 5, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Short answer: Yes, this adapter will (should?) accommodate DVI-D.
DVI-D is DVI only (digital only - no support for analog), and that is why there is only a horizontal wide slot on the right on your monitor and cable.
DVI-I is both digital and analog, and that is what this adapter supports. Search Wikipedia for "DVI-D" and you will get to a page with an explanation of the connector types and what they ought to support.

My display also doesn't have those pins and it works fine. They are analog pins used to connect to an analog display (e.g. VGA) with a second passive adaptor. If you are connecting directly to a monitor which has a DVI-D plug you don't need those pins to be connected, so the plug probably won't have those pins.

The 4 pins you're referring to are for analog, i.e. DVI-A. That implies your monitor doesn't support analog input which makes sense if it's not really old. I've used this adapter for DVI-D single link and I believe it will work fine with dual link too.

I tired this adapter with a DVI-D adapter to VGA and it didn't power the display. I also tried Monoprice P/N 21607 which is a passive adapter and it was too a no go. Good Luck!

Trying to connect my late 2009 iMac to a second monitor. I am running Sierra - will this world??

BEST ANSWER: Probably not if you don't have any add in cards. This adapter is USB-c a relatively new standard. Most likely the port on your 209 iMac is mini display port. Have a look at the ports on your iMac compared to this apple document to confirm what you have available for connection. Putting name and kb id since links are not permitted here.

Your iMac has no USB-C ports. What you need is a Mini DisplayPort adapter. Figure out what type of inputs the second monitor has -- DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI, etc., and get a cable that connects from Mini DisplayPort to one of those port types.

BEST ANSWER: That is exactly the setup I have. The monitor works great (it's still a beautiful monitor, even after all these years!) After about 5 months the power "pass through" function of this adapter stopped working, so now I have to plug power in separately, but it's still a decent product for the price.

Would this adapter help me connect my Eizo CG303W screen to my iMac Pro?
New User U

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it should. I'm pretty sure that this adapter can handle any valid DVI speed. I used it to connect a Wacom Centiq 21UX, which is the same accuracy and age as your Eizo but with half the resolution (1600x1200), and the single DVI with this adapter works great. You'll need two adapters, of course, since your Eizo has two DVI feeds

Spaghetti tamer.
Thus far, this adapter has fit a unique niche on my desk that otherwise would have consumed three of the USB-C ports and require the same amount of cable wrangling. While that may seem trivial, it?s a tremendous help not having to fish all that spaghetti from within my work environment daily.
