Can it print stl or just gcode?
A shopper
on Apr 5, 2019
BEST ANSWER: It comes with a simplified version of Cura that will translate the Atlanta file into gcode. It is very simple to use yet gives you full control of each aspect of the print if you switch to advanced mode. None of the 3D printers actually print an Atlanta file as any 3D object needs converted to information the motors on the printer can understand like 3D coordinates. This is why the code file is created.

I am fairly certain that the printer will print only gcode. The slicer program you use interprets the stl file and generates the gcode file that the printer can print from. There are several free slicer programs to choose from and there will be one included on the SD card with the printer.

This just like any 3D printer only works with gcode files. You must first "slice" your stl model with a slicer program such as Cura which will create a gcode file that you can then place on an SD card and insert into the printer to print with.

It only prints Gcode. If you have it hooked up to a server like Astroprint or Octoprint, you can upload STL files to there and it will do the slicing for you, if set up right.

It can only print gcode directly, but can print STLs after running through a slicer, such as Cura or Slic3r. Includes a pre-configured version of Cura on the included SD card.

I just got mine today (3/23/17) and it does not seem ANY version of Cura has the setting for any IIP/plus or anything similar. Where do I get the software that has the correct settings?
A shopper
on Mar 23, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You can use any version of Cura. If you're using Cura 2.4, for example, the Maker Select Plus is not in their list, but you can just choose "Custom FDM Printer". In the printer settings, just make sure you set your build volume (200x200x180), your nozzle size (0.4mm), your gcode flavor (RepRap (Marlin/Sprinter)), and check the "Heated Bed" checkbox. You should be able to leave everything else at the default settings. Good luck!

There really isn't any need to have a preset for it, you just tell Cura your build area (200x200x180 mm) and that's all it needs to know. Anything else that you would be setting would be under the "Custom" configuration button on the main program window (that is, if you want to get deeper into things beyond the basic presets).

I use cura 15.04.6 you can dl from their website, for gcode flavor use Reprap (marlin/sprinter). Since this is your first I'd also suggest a glass bed, better filament cooler and braces to improve print quality and reliability. ( mods can be found on thingiverse)

Can you run prints from the SD card without the computer or does the computer need to be connected during the print?
A shopper
on Jan 18, 2018
BEST ANSWER: You can run the prints directly from an SD card. I use Cura to slice my 3D prints and then send it to the SD card. You do not need a computer hooked up to the printer if you use the SD card.. I tried running a print job off a computer plugged into the printer and you have to leave it attached the whole print and it cannot go to sleep. I have been using an SD card ever since.

Actually, the preferred way to print is by using the SD card.
Sometimes errors can occur when connected by USB to your computer and trying to print. This happens if the computer goes to sleep, or for some reason it doesn't supply data through the USB in a timely manner.

filament does not adhere to base when printing. What setting in cura needed?+ Printing begins close to front edge of base, not center. What setting is needed in Cura?
Kenneth W
on Jan 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: If filament does not adhere to base, the temperature of the base is not correct for the type of filament or the ambient temperature of the room is to cold. This is if the temperature probe is reading correctly. Use an infrared temperature sensor/gun to see what the temperature actually is. You can purchase one for less than $20.
Printing at front base: Y axis not zeroed. Download IIICURA program from Cura. Suggest no antivirus programs running other than Windows Defender. There can be many other variables causing the problem. Hope this helps.

I put down some blue painters tape and Then sprayed it with hairspray to fix my adhesion problems.
In cura if you right click on the model you can center it to the grow area.
Also under custom settings you can choose an adhesion type, depending on the shape of your model I would go with a skirt or a raft.

How do I get the software that is supposed to be on the SD card? The one that came with my Select Plus was blank. No files at all.
A shopper
on Sep 21, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I am not sure why your printer did not come with the software. As I recall, the original SD card contain only a customized version of slicer software and some test prints that are equivalent to many that can be found on the net. The slicer software was a customized version of Cura by Ultimaker. An updated version of Cura can be downloaded from the Ultimaker site. If you go on the net, you can find detailed instructions as to how to set it up for the Maker Select. It is a little complicated and I had to use COM5 to communicated with the printer over USB.
I think that if you are so bold and put your email address up, someone could email you the essential files off the SD card. It is a little easier to use the customized version of Cura off the card but it is a little out of date.

I have this printer and have been using it for a while. The only part that is not metal is a small silicone feeder tube inside the assembly. The only time I had issues with the silicone was printing PETG. The temp needed to print that filament is too high for the feeder tube.

The software that comes with the Maker select plus3 is on the sd card supplied by Monoprice. The Cura software that can be downloaded does not have the machine on it, and it should. It is best to use the software from the sd card to start with, it is much easier to understand and use.

Does this printer have a feature to extract the filament out using the extrusion feeder? Basically, I want it to pause the printer then change the color of the filament easily. Thanks!
A shopper
on Feb 14, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Pausing at a layer is possible, but you may have to edit your gcode because some slicing software will use a command not recognized by this printer. There are lots of tutorials and forum threads describing this (search for M25). To change filament, all you need to do is squeeze the release lever and pull. The old filament will pop right out, and you can push the new filament in by hand until the color changes.
It also helps to build a “waste tower” to extrude at a controlled rate after changing filament. This generally produces better prints than just purging into air, because the nozzle temp will be unstable immediately after the swap.

The printer does have the ability to use the feeder to load / unload filament, although I've never paused mid-print to use it. There is a "pause at height" plugin for Cura that pauses the print at a specific layer and moves the extruder to safe place where you could change the filament color before restarting again.

Will this print PETG, and how can you increase the heat?

BEST ANSWER: You can print PETG just fine if you install the Microswiss all-metal hotend. The stock ptfe lined tube will degrade and melt under that high of a temperature over time. You can increase the heat through your slicer settings when you slice a model, through the printers screen, or through octoprint, if you hook the printer up to that.

How do I print over USB instead of SD card?
A shopper
on Dec 29, 2016
BEST ANSWER: You need specific software. Simplify3D can do it and there are other (free) options, but I'd suggest setting up Octoprint (preferably on a Raspberry Pi). It not only allows you to print from USB, but also gives you full control and monitoring of the printer. The downside of printing from USB is the computer needs to be on during the entire print or the print will fail. So, if you're printing from a Windows computer, automatic updates can restart your computer and kill your print. A Raspberry Pi eliminates this problem (though you still need an SD card and reader to get the Raspberry Pi set up)

Take a look at octoprint. I've heard this is the best software to use when connecting your pc to a computer. You can access it via a webpage and check status, etc. As the previous answer stated you will be dependent on the pc during prints. So if the pc fails or goes offline then your print will fail.

I am trying to determine the maximum footprint of the "Plus". Can the edges of the bed move past the edges of the base when move to its maximum position? Also, the dimensions are indicated as 400 x 400 x 410 mm. Which one is the longer dimension?

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question. The build plate when pulled all the way forward will stick out a little past the base and it will be the same when pushed all the way towards the back. I would recommend giving a couple inches of space to accommodate the bed movement.
As for the listed dimensions the 410mm would be from the front of the unit to the back as the previous answer has mentioned. I hope this helps.

It does slightly overhand the base in the front and back, but you need the space in front anyway to access the touch screen, and you need it in back to reach the power switch and for the power cord. You also need additional vertical space for the filament spool. But you should be fine to the left and right to come right up to the frame.

It sounds like you may be used to printing on glass. The mat included with this printer will help the ABS stick at lower temperature. The default used by the printer is 50C for PLA, but 60C is good enough for ABS with this mat, especially if you use an additional adhesive.

How does all of this relate to what the speed is that you export from Cura and the print speed percentage on the touchscreen menu?
I loaded up a file in the software and it was set to 40mm/s and it was a 2 hour print. Then I put it at 70mm/s in the software and it was still a 2 hour print?
The touchscreen can be bumped up to 300% ... how do all these numbers relate?

The motors on this printer are capable of moving the print head at 150mm per second. The motors on the previous model (Select v2) could only do 100mm per second.
**But what actually limits you more are the nature of the material and the model.**
That confused me, too, when first starting out. This includes things like cooling, how much you over-hang, and how long it takes to complete a single layer before moving to the next. All of those have nothing to do with what your motors will do, but matter much more to how fast you will actually be able to print. It's much more common to print closer to 50mm per second, regardless of what the motors can do.
But this isn't to say the faster speed doesn't help. It's useful for travel between sections, or between an end position of one layer and the start of the next, and so will reduce print times that way, and it's useful to help reduce stringing, and so can improve the quality of the print results.

I do know about some of the issues you are referring to. But I honestly do not know if they have been fixed or not. I THINK they may have, but that is an unproven guess. Just today, I unpacked my new warranty replaced printer and it is right this minute, printing a first test run. I know that older models, my first one included, had too small of wire and connectors going to the power supply, this one seems to have decent sized wire, good connections, (I checked) before I powered it up. So I am hopeful that the other issues are also fixed. I also notice that this new one has an actual Wanhao circuit board inside, so perhaps things have gotten better now? That is my sincere hope anyway.

Set your build volume (under Preferences/Configure Cura/Printers, select your printer in the list, then Machine Settings, Printer tab) to X=200mm, Y=200mm, Z=180mm. Under the Extruder tab, verify that Cura has material dimeter as 1.75mm. You can also rename your printer to "Monoprice Select Plus" here if you want to.

Monoprice made a specific version of the cura software. It should have the version they refference in that. Did you download the generic cura software or the specicif one made by monoprice? I believe the specific one also came on the card they sent with the printer. I have the same printer but am using a pc. Not sure if they put the mac install on the card.

Should you use an enclosure for the printer?

BEST ANSWER: I do not use an enclosure. I use mostly PLA and there are no issues with fumes etc. there are some articles about nanoparticles that may help you consider one. I would not think that an enclosure would improve performance. I’m super happy with the print quality and overall performance of this device. It does make a fair amount of noise when printing though. At night is can make a bunch of robotic sounds as motors turn etc. I put it in a spare room and close the door. No problem. ABS fumes are bad, but a terrible material to work with overall.
