I assume that these couplers would be backwards compatible. Is that correct?

BEST ANSWER: I have one of these, and it works perfectly. Should not be a problem to use any RJ45 type cable on these.

Besides being listed as supporting the higher Cat standard, what about the construction of this PID 15697 (Cat6A) makes it better than PID 7286 (Cat6)?

Monoprice Cat6A RJ45 Modular Inline Coupler, White
Monoprice Cat6 RJ45 Modular Inline Coupler, White
BEST ANSWER: Hello, thank you for your question. The difference between the two is that anything that supports a Cat6a standard allows you to get the most out of your Cat6a wiring since Cat6a doubles the data transmission bandwidth, from 250 to 500 MHz over standard Cat6. It also decreases the chance of crosstalk interference; and provides superior reliability and transmission speeds through greater lengths of cable.

There are 2 couplers pictured but I find no mention of 2 units in the description. Does this come with 2 or 1 couplers when ordering a quantity value of 1?

I have 6 of these, and they are all doing 1G. Some of them are even coupling Cat3 (yes!) to Cat6A.

Kill Switch
Bought kill switches on ebay from hackers that looked real cool but over time my data speed became variable and unreliable when in place so I looked for an alternative to the switch. These really inexpensive couplers are unattractive, inexpensive but performs better than the kill switches I bought for 25x higher in price. This coupler allows me to have a data flow killer inline on my ethernet cable up near my keyboard where I can uncouple it in a second. Everyone with a hard wired connection needs to have the ability to interrupt the data flow easily. These are perfect!

I have not received the product and it is a month later.
I wouldn't know if this is a good product or not since I have not received my order. I received someone else's order. Getting them to sort out and fix the order is a nightmare.

My take of in-line ethernet RJ45 to RJ45 cupler connector Cat6A
This inline coupler allowed me to extend my cat5E cable from the wall by adding this coupler, then add a 3 cat5e cable to our new OLED Sony TV.
Solid connection, and ethernet works great.

Weak link in my CAT 6 cable run
Bought this in 2016, came in a bag with 2 of them. I used 1 to connect to a CAT 6 ethernet wall outlet (Home Depot) I installed by my desktop. Behind the outlet I connected wires from a snipped short CAT 6 cable which I ran in the crawl space. Then used this coupler to connect to a longer CAT 6 cable that connected to the router. I also had a CAT 6 cable from the outlet to my desktop.
Fast forward a couple years and my ISP increased my internet speed, but my other computers get faster speed tests. My desktop shows 100M instead of 1.0G on the ethernet adapter status and speed tests seem capped at 100 Mbps. I replaced the easiest thing first, cable to my deskop - no change. Then I replaced the coupler (UL listed one on Amazon w/ good reviews) - boom 250Mbps. Something was wrong with the coupler and I probably just didn't notice it until now. I even had it surrounded in tape so it was protected. It seems like it wasn't really CAT 6 or something. Maybe it degraded like other reviewer mentioned. Strange. I've been happy with my Monoprice purchases on everything else.

Misleading photos
The item, with multiple pictures show TWO coupler, which is the reason why I purchased one "set" thinking I'd get 2. There was only one coupler. Now I only have 1 instead of the 2 that I needed.

Intermittent
I have had several of these become intermittent on two or three pins. Giving up and trying a brand that is UL listed instead, although at a higher cost. Dave.
