BEST ANSWER: Hello, thank you for your question, this unit does in fact use USB C Alt mode. Unfortunately we have not tested android phone compatibility as it was not designed to be used with those devices. I apologize for the inconvenience

It appears that on one side that there's a USB-C plug and on the other there are 3 jacks: VGA, USB-A, and USB-C, right? If I plug it into a Thunderbolt 3/USB-C jack on a laptop then I'll see video on the VGA jack, the USB-A jack will function as normal USB 3.1 port, and the USB-C jack will function as either a Thunderbolt 3 port or a USB 3.1 port. Is all that correct?

partially defective adapter
It works ok to connect my Seagate backup drive to my MacBook Air USB-C, but it failed to connect with 2 different VGA monitors. That failure caused me a lot of time & unnecessary research (aggravated by two non-Monoprice tech people who told me the problem was that the monitor was incompatible with my new computer). Ultimately, went to a retail store known for its tech-savvy staff. The first person there said it sounded like a defective adapter. Got a new adapter?. problem solved!

Inexpensive Solution
I bought this because I have a VGA monitor and was given a laptop with only a USB-C port. I plugged this into the port, connected the VGA cable and the montior worked perfectly. I connected a USB hub to the USB port and that works. too. Easy Peasy

Great!
Works great. I used this to replace a different adapter which would occasionally freeze on me. This adapter has been perfect. The only portion I can't speak to is the pass through charging function, as my laptop down not support USB-C charging

Used to work great, power issues
The unit worked great for a few months, then started dropping power to both the USB-C passthrough and the USB-A port, which would corrupt external hard drives and lead to a dead MBP13TB battery.

Worked Great
I tried to use an HDMI projector adapter with a MacBook, but the USB port on the adapter was too close too the HDMI port to allow the receiver for the slide remote to plug in. This adapter allowed the VGA plug, the remote control receiver, and the USB-C power supply to all be plugged in at the same time.

Interferes with wifi
I can reproduce this every single time - without this connected, scan for wifi, I can find many connections, plug this in, with nothing plugged into it, and wifi drops and can barely see anything, including my own wifi, even when close to the base station. Very disappointing, I basically can't use wifi on my brand new MacBook Pro 13" with Touch Bar. It worked okay on my old 12" MacBook, but now, it is almost useless - if I want to charge my phone or connect to a monitor, I can't use wifi...very strange, very disappointing.

Works
Works as advertised for a much lower price than the apple version.

Works great SOMETIMES
I can connect my monitor and my keyboard & mouse to it, but the keyboard & mouse randomly seem to go offline every once in a while. I could be in the middle of typing a sentence and then it stops recognizing my keyboard. Same with the mouse. Everyday I have to disconnect and reconnect my devices multiple times when this occurs. This could be a bug with the new Macs because I am seeing similar reviews on the Apple brand version of this same product.
