Questions and Answers
When asked if I was interested in reviewing the Vegas Bluetooth portable speaker, I wasn't expecting the surprise that I received. It came in the typical no frills, but well packaged white box from Monoprice. Upon opening it and removing the speaker from the box, I noticed there were no instructions. Now maybe mine was forgotten because it was a review unit. Logging on to their website, I also didn't see a downloadable manual. Oh well, I mean it's a Bluetooth device, so I should be able to figure it out.
Flipping the power switch to on, I was greeted with a red light on top of it and my Note 3 couldn't find the device. Ok so, deduction dear Watson, red usually means bad or dead. So I turned the unit off and plugged into my Select Series Power Bank ( pid 13083 ) on the 2.0 a side and let it charge. I recorded a 3.25hr recharge time. The unit will alternately change the led from blue to a purplish color while charging if the unit is on. It flashes red if off. Once done, it is solid blue while on or nothing when in the off stage. One interesting note on that , you can actually continue to use the device while it's charging. It's nice that you are able to so and not be without tunes while it charges up. Using my power bank I actually charged both my phone and this unit all the while enjoying music during the process of recharging.
Ok fine you say, but how does it sound? That is what you're really after right? Well the sound surprised the heck out of me. For it's size, it was rich and full. 3 Watts isn't much these days. But with the way the unit is designed and the 40mm drivers being 4 ohm, that makes a big difference in sound. The "rear" firing passive radiator, really does help the base response. High quality FLAK or MP3 files sound great. Low quality MP3 or WAV files can start the beginnings of distortion at maximum volume.
But what about the distance on the signal? I need leave my phone/Bluetooth unit right beside it, right? Nope. I measured 30' from either side. One was test was through glass. I left my phone on charger in my office and took the speaker out by the pool and through the glass at up to 30' it stayed connected, provided it had clear line of sight. Repeated this on the other side, while outside with my phone and same results. Clear line of sight I saw 30' of range. Tried it again from the rear of the unit and I recorded 35' of range, when unobstructed. Now your mileage might vary, but across my pool and facing the front, I was able to document 50' of distance before the signal started to drop. That's impressive.
I tested phone call operation on the unit and found the person on the other end to have a deeper voice then normal ( unless my mother in law was sick that day lol) but they were still clear and very recognizable. Comments on the other end were that I sounded normal and that the quality was clear. It's a neat feature to have built in for handling phone calls. For the price I think this unit is a good value and I would recommend it in a heartbeat. The only thing missing? The ability to daisy chain a couple of these together to place around your patio / pool area for when you're entertaining. They are sturdy and can withstand a drop from a table height so to use them for outdoor activities is a no brainer.
I did dock it one star for the lack of manual, either in the box or available here on the website. I'm sure this will be corrected and if so, then it gets 10 stars!
Thanks for taking the time to read this review, hope it helped in your purchasing decision.
PROS: Great sound, good Bluetooth signal distance, input jack for non BT devices
CONS: Unit wasn't charged, Sound will border on distortion at max volume depending on recording quality
Easy to use
CONS: Instruction sheet says "see web site for manual" - but there isn't a manual. Still, not that hard to figure out volume and skip buttons. The other button was a little mysterious, but eventually revealed itself as "pause/resume/answer phone" (quick press) and "disconnect" (long press).
It's what everyone is asking for in the reviews.
PROS: Sounds pretty good
CONS: No Manual
The speaker arrived today, and I had it set up (using the provided Quick User Guide) in less than five minutes - I'm listening to it now, in fact. The sound quality is very good considering the compact size. I pushed the volume to the upper limits and experienced some distortion, but this was not unexpected.
The unit is heavier than I expected which is a good thing. I was a bit concerned that it might feel cheap and light however, it comes across as substantial.
I look forward to taking it out on my deck while I grill or to the workout room to play music for meditation or out on the next camping trip. I'm very pleased.
High Quality Audio (as compared to equivalent products)
CONS: So as to be consistent with many of the other reviews, I will restate that there is no manual. I searched the site including the Downloads section and was unable to locate one. I hope Monoprice will rectify this soon.
Doesn't come with a user manual and monoprice doesn't have one on their site for download, so good luck figuring out the different things the middle button does.
CONS: No user manual
PROS: Small, compact to fit into any bag or beach bag, or party bag, or even just good for your desk at your job. Bass is good for it's size, volume is good also. Just the really high volume causes crackling in the music. So as long as your a average listener to music at a normal volume then yes this is the product for you. It does fill a small room rather well. Outside is ok also, but don't use this for a large party, maybe on a table with a bunch of friends surrounding it.
CONS: Doesn't replace high amplified speakers.
PROS: Audio quality for the price!
CONS: As all others before, lack of manual.
In trying to audition smaller portable Bluetooth speakers, I have listened Dozens. But there is nothing out there in this size and price range with this level of features he performs even close to this one. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your time out hunting for what's already here. Just buy it
PROS: Best value. Blows away the competition at this price and size. Easy to use, charges fast and plays for hours on one charge.
CONS: There are none.
While it is slightly larger than most other speakers that are out there, not counting significantly smaller units which don't have nearly the battery life, or the sound, the weight is on par with other similar products, so if you're carrying it around either in your bag or in a pocket, it's really not that bad. That weight helps make the construction feel really solid though.
Really though, the best part about this speaker is the sound. It's loud. It's clean. It's throaty. It's hard to believe it's coming out of such a small box, and at such a tiny price tag. Sure, it's not going to sound as good as a pair of $500 studio monitors, but you can't throw those in your pocket and listen to them on the go for 30 bucks.
If I had to find one fault with the speaker, it would be the batter life. Granted, I play it at full volume, so obviously that's going to draw more juice than moderate levels would, but I get any where between 3-4 hours of playtime off a full charge before it turns off. Thankfully, I always have batter pack with me, so I can easily get through a full 8 hour day with it, but I would have loved to have seen the actual stated times on the page. Oh well, I fully expected 3-4 hours as that's what other speakers get off a similar capacity battery, so I knew what I was in for.
PROS: The sound
The build quality
CONS: Average batter life
