what is the difference between 12795 and 12742, other than size, price and DP 1.2a. I have a couple of the other 12742 ones in white and I really do like the slim new design. both are passive so I guess one could be certified higher?
Last time I was here I picked up one of the active ones and it didn't work with all of my devices, not always detected, reduced resolution output.

BEST ANSWER: This connector is not Thunderbolt. IT is mini DP. You will need to check the specs of the laptop to see if the port is actually mini DP or just Thunderbolt.

Despite the title saying 'passive', isn't this actually an active adapter?
I say this because the 'xrandr' Linux command shows the output as "DisplayPort" yet, if it were truly passive, the output from xrandr would instead say "HDMI" (same goes for the 'Display' application on the Cinnamon desktop environment, e.g. Linux Mint)

BEST ANSWER: Personally, on my ThinkPad T430s running Arch, xrandr calls it HDMI-1, and even includes a separate, although unactive, DP-0 output. However, this may have something to do with the fact that the T430s' DisplayPort connector is actually a Thunderbolt port. Not too sure.

Would this work to connect a new MacBook Pro to older Apple Thunderbolt Display?

BEST ANSWER: Hello,
Thank you for your inquiry. This would not work with older Apple Thurderbolt displays, the thunderbolt port is for output from the source rather than the input on the display.

Have a late 2012 Mac Mini, will this allow me to send the 2560x1600 resolution over an appropriate hdmi cable to a tv that can support that res?

BEST ANSWER: There are computer monitors that support that resolution, but I have never heard of a TV in that format.
Most TVs are 1920c1080 for HD, and UHD are 3640x2160. Only computer monitors are ever 2560x1600. We have a dell monitor like this connected to a MAC but I believe we were able to just use Mini-DisplayPort directly into the monitor, we did not use this adaptor. I have used these on Lenovo Think stations with a 4 port display card that is all mini-DisplayPort. This should work for what you are wanting to do.

Great device to connect 2012 MacBook Pro to external HDMI 1080 display
This Displayport passive adapter allows me to extend or duplicate the desktop of the MacBook Pro onto a larger monitor. Great device that allows a better visual experience.

Dead(ish) on arrival
Plugged everything in and it powers on, however the display periodically turns off then back on every 10-30 seconds.
Confirmed this converter was the reason by testing with multiple devices.
