will this really not work with any CPU less than core i5, or will it just not reach it's highest resolution?

BEST ANSWER: It functions based on the specs provided. If you don't meet all the minimum criteria, my experience is that it will only port out SVGA (800x600) graphics.

Can Linux be configured to work with this adapter? Or maybe it works out of the box? (I'm using an Ubuntu derivative.)

Quirky
It works, but took some finessing to get it to work properly. An improvement would be for the adaptor to be able to attach (use screws from vga cable) to the cable. The adaptor need to sit on desk or the weight from the cable pulls it out.

Works seamlessly as advertised. I run a new LG Ultrawide, and an older Dell 19" from my laptop, my laptops VGA doesnt like the older Dell and this is the answer, to convert to USB.

Make certain you have USB 3.0 before ordering
I purchased this for a user who needs a third screen. I didn't check to make sure that he had USB 3.0, but assumed that at worst it would give him 1440 x 900 or even 1024 x 768. Nope. 800 x 600. The website description has been updated since I purchased to show this limitation, but really? 800 x 600? That's just not even trying! And it looked like it was only 256 colors, though that could just be the poor resolution playing tricks on my eyes.
The user threw out the blister pack it came in, so I'm going to have to hold on to this now until I need a display adapter for a system with a USB 3.0 port.
DON'T PURCHASE THIS UNLESS you're absolutely sure you have USB 3.0 (usually a blue-tinted USB port indicates USB 3.0).
PROS: Small form factor, self-installs with Fresco drivers (DisplayLink equivalent almost always requires downloading from DisplayLink).
CONS: Absolutely REQUIRES USB 3.0 or it won't work properly.

USB 3.0 to VGA Adapter
Item was received as ordered. I was unable to get the computer to project to the TV using this product but I am not sure why. I have ordered from MONOPRICE.COM in the past and always had good luck. I will be back in the future.

Blurry
Not a clean, crisp 1920 x 1080. It is blurry and hurts my eyes. I have dual 24" screens connected to my laptop and when I compare the screen connected to HDMI vs the screen connected to this adapter it is very obvious that this is not a true 1920 x 1080. The items are the same size in both screens but it's just blurry on the one. I downloaded the latest drivers from the manufactures website. https://support.zoho.com/portal/frescologic/homeDownloads. I have a new lenova yoga 700 running windows 10. I did not have any issues with quality before when my old laptop was connected directly to the monitor via VGA. I bought this item because it seemed like a good value but it does not offer true 1920x1080 quality. Please note that I do have USB 3.0 and this is not 800x600 resolution.
PROS: Works but blurry
CONS: Not true 1920x1080

Works fine if everything aligns
Because my laptop has only one USB 3.0 port, I tried to use it with my USB 3.0 hub. It caused my secondary screen to flash. If you have more than one peripheral that needs a 3.0 port (e.g., external hard drive), you are out of luck. Also, because the adaptor does not have the attachment screws the connection is in jeopardy unless you can lay the two cords flat so the law of gravity doesn't kick in to make the connection unstable. I was recently at a meeting making a presentation and all i had to work with was the podium. My laptop fit but the connection had to hang off the side and it would fade in and out.
PROS: Price is right. Small and easy to transport. Works fine if everything aligns.
CONS: No connectors to secure it to the VGA source.

did not work
I plugged it in the usb 3.0 port, installed the software, rebooted and could not under any circumstances get it to work. I then tried it on another new computer (both windows 10) with a different monitor. Neither time would it work. I really need it for this location, but alas after travelling 232 miles to come to my office here to install it, it would not work. I have been a computer tech for more than 30 years, no novice!
PROS: got here quickly.
CONS: failed to work after multiple attempts on 2 different computers and two different monitors. (:

USB 3.0 to VGA Adapter
I used it in my PC's one is windows 8 another 8.1 and others, window 7... Makes the monitor's screen connected to the item to flick (On and off) too often and is annoying.
