It will work with any negative, old or new, as long as you have the proper lens for capturing the image size of the negative you are using. You will most likely need a macro lens or a zoom lens with a macro feature. You may also need a sheet of very thin glass to hold the negative flat during capture.

Can you cut on this without ruining the surface? What is the top made out of?

BEST ANSWER: I wouldn't recommend cutting paper directly on the working surface - you'll cut the surface. If you have a translucent cutting mat that's not too think and will transmit sufficient light it might be possible to cut a sheet or two at at time using light pressure on the knife. I wouldn't try to cut anything more than a couple of sheets at a time, and I wouldn't recommend heavy pressure on the top of the lightbox. of course, YMMV.

I would definitely not use this as a cutting surface. It’s designed to be used to trace designs, view and sort transparencies, etc. Cutting anything on this will ruin the surface and create shadows when viewing anything backlit.

The large version I have has a 1/16" thick or so plexiglass (or polycarbonate) on top. So yes it will scratch.

It is dimmable, but brightness is not easily repeatable. It cycles through its brightness levels quickly, and you have to take your finger off the non-mechanical switch (I think it's a capacitive-touch sensor) at the exact time when it is at its desired brightness.

Thickness of paper light can shine through for tracing?

BEST ANSWER: I would say 2-ply thickness is the comfortable maximum - though up to 3-ply is possible; although details of what is being lightboxed will be very hard to see . I'd recommend working on this lightbox in a complete darkened room to optimize transparency, and to make sure that what is being traced is on a thin sheet and in high contrast black and white . a good rule for fidelity and ease is to work on the thinnest media possible.

The thickest paper I've used is 140lb watercolor paper. I can lay the 140lb over the drawing, which by the way is sometimes on paper thicker than tracing or light drawing paper, and there is plenty of light to trace the drawing onto the 140lb watercolor paper..

Only use it once so far and used double copy paper. I tried it with one sheet first ,but marker bleed through and now trying to find a cleaner to get it off light. Sorry, I trace patterns for rug hooking. So this may not be helpful .

If I use a clear cutting mat with this, is it strong enough to use with a knife and ruler to cut paper on the surface? Or might it collapse?

BEST ANSWER: I have the large version of their light box and just looked it. the top surface is 1/16" thick plexiglass, so personally I think you run the risk of potentially marring the surface and depending on how much pressure you apply you may crack it.
By the way plexiglass is not glass its some sort of polycarbonate plastic, so it can be scratched.
You could consider buying a piece of 1/8" clear glass to lay on top and do your cutting on that. Should not cost too much, and glass does not scratch nearly as easy as plexiglass does. Hope this helps:)

The body of this is solid plastic. The LEDs and electronics are all in the periphery. As long as it's on a solid surface it will not collapse, but it is plastic and will flex.

I believe you are asking if you can connect a computer to the light pad in order to transfer pictures from your computer to the pad. No, you can’t do this. There is no USB port.

The plug on mine measures 4mm OD and appears to be 1.75mm ID. However the barrel is only 9mm length, which is shorter than the normal 12mm length for DC connectors. The 12mm ones do not fully seat in the jack on the light box.

How to turn on light box? The red light is on and, I have engaged the power button. Nothing!

BEST ANSWER: Once the power is plugged in, just press AND HOLD the button, the light will come on, and will increase in brightness. Just remove your finger when it is at the brightness level you want, or continue to hold it, and it will go to maximum brightness and stop there. Do the same thing again, when you want to lower the light level...just hold the button until your desired light level is reached...then take your finger off of the button. It's much simpler than it sounds!

One of my three large light boxes, has a similar issue. If the area above the "on/off" switch is not covered completely by my finger, it does not respond. And, even then, it can be a bit finicky. Seems to happen when my hands are especially dry. Patience and persistence have prevailed. Remember, when the switch is pressed and held, the light intensity will slowly increase from the "off" position to full brightness, or decrease from a brighter state.

The color temperature is a bit more blue than 5000° K-rated CFL lights, but still blends well with them. The boxes provide surprisingly bright and even illumination. Can be used close to small objects similar to a softbox for photography. There is no visible difference between my four units, some older and some newer.

BEST ANSWER: I took a dark purple petunia and placed it on the light table at it's brightest setting and it made all of the veining of the petals clear. The garden is rather bare, so I didn't have other petal options to test.

You would want to use a universal power adapter with at least 12V, 1A power.

BEST ANSWER: I don't own an equipment that can analyze color temperature, but by observation, this is bright. daylight white. I gave this to my daughter who uses it in her college design classes to be able to trace onto transparencies from stock pictures which she then scans and then uploads into motion graphics software programs for animation. It saves her a lot of time and is large enough to handle just about any picture.

BEST ANSWER: I didn't see a way to order it with an inches measurement on it. I do know there are rulers that are made on adhesive tape, you could add one of those to it.

Monoprice Thin Light Box
I've had this light box for over a month. It is a really large and well light surface for my stained glass. In addition, this company is very quickly responsive to customer needs or support! I highly recommend them and the light box!

Lightbox Changed How I Work
The Lightbox was delivered as promised. It is an excellent tool for my use, sorting negatives 115 to 60 years old, prior to scanning. It was like magic the first time I turned it on. I don?t know how I managed all these years without one.

Happy Purchase!!
I am very happy with my purchase. This is a really nice tracing light box. The price is incredible compared to many other units I have researched. I am using this light box for tracing patterns and illustrations for quilting and applique. The light is very bright and I will sometimes put an extra sheet of paper under what I am tracing to dim the light. I will recommend this unit to my friends and I highly recommend this.
