I attempted to load the drivers from the CD (worst install CD since CDs). Drivers not recognized by Windows.
I attempted to load the drivers downloaded from IOCrest (the manufacturer). Drivers not recognized by Windows.
I attempted to load the drivers downloaded from Prolific (the chipset manufacturer). Drivers not recognized by Windows.
I cannot provide higher than 1 star for a product that does not work as advertised. I'm going to break out one of my older systems and a Linux box and test the device on those. If it works there, I will update my review.
PROS: Modular to allow any length of USB cable you want.
After the driver installed this didn't work at all. I am running Windows 7. I can say that I was installing on a work computer which has limited/controlled access to Windows updates although I can install software in general. After the included drivers were installed the device did not work. I purchased two of these and both had the same issues on different ports on my computer. Later I purchased a more expensive $30 version from MicroCenter locally and it installed and worked right away.
PROS: Cheap. Flexible. Adaptable (can add on wire length easily)
After trying two of these with same results (Device cannot start. Code 10) I chatted with a TS and was provided an old driver intended for use with Vista (driver version 126.96.36.199, dated 7/31/2007). It did work, but upon connecting a more recent adapter that was based on a newer chipset, Windows reinstalled the latest driver and this adapter stopped working again. It also may not be easy to obtain the older Prolific driver. Kudos to Monoprice for excellent tech support and RMA process, but not so much for accurate descriptions on the website pages.
PROS: Nice solid housing
CONS: Will not work on Windows 7 with current Prolific driver.
Automatic updates will install latest driver, rendering this device non-functional.
If you are looking for a USB to Serial Male converter, this is the one you want. The software came on a mini CD or you can download. No issues installing, just remember to reboot. I used it to connect to my X-Frame 88 Media Matrix with no problem after changing the COM port.
PROS: Price, easy to install software, works on the first time
I have had a few of these with the same molding but a newer chipset. this particular manufacturer uses an older chipset that is no compatible with a 64 bit OS. Prolific, the manufacturer of the chip itself, claims the issue is counterfeit chipsets from china. regardless of what the actual problem is, i could not get 4 of these to work on 3 different 64 bit laptops.
PROS: Monoprice worked with me to issue a credit with very little hassle.
CONS: 4 different units did not work with windows 7 64 bit. Even though it says on the site that it is 64 bit compatible, the manufacturer says it is not.
