Let it be known that I have loved virtually all my prior purchases from Monoprice. This 5 cable ribbon, however, seems to have more challenges than benefits.
The ribbon itself is extremely stiff. The component video cables are not lined up in the usual order and the audio cables are a bit longer than the video cables. None of this should be a deal breaker until you factor in the stiffness. There is simply no way to flex the cable without affecting your connections. Since half the RCA connectors came fitting very loosely any effort to adjust or flex the cable resulted in a loss of contact somewhere in the chain.
The excess cable could also not be easily tucked out of the way. My tuner just kept flying off the rack. After a struggle I did get the cable adequately supported with plastic ties only to discover that one of the audio cables was shorted out. While it was not difficult to substitute another audio cable I decided to call it quits at this point. I purchased a set of flexible component video cables and paired them with some spare audio cables. Five separate flexible cables worked well even if the look was a bit more cluttered.
Although this ribbon design seems like a good idea and the quality of the cables was never in question the ergonomics and RCA connectors chosen do not seem very synergistic. You might be able to separate out the cables and obtain a better outcome but it sort of defeats the purpose of having a single ribbon design. A bit of a disappointment, unfortunately.
PROS: Durable, perhaps too much so for its own good. Quality of the individual cables is good.
CONS: Cable is very, very stiff. Half the RCA connectors fit too loosely to stay connected. One Audio cable was short circuited.
Updated review I was very excited to get these cables. The build quality seemed to be very good. Firm connections at the time. Well, it has been almost two years now since I have used these. I only pulled them off the back of the TV just one time since I installed them. Now comes the problem, I was wondering why the picture quality was not very good. The connections had worked away from the inputs. The RCA ends just loosened to the point where there was no connection at all. The metal must be very cheap. I am so disappointed.
PROS: Nice thick cables((kind of stiff). The RCA ends appear to be good quality and the final end product, the picture quality, is great. I have used much higher value cables, and I wish I had known about Monoprice before. Monoprice hasn't let me down yet!
CONS: The RCA ends are a just a bit to large for my TV inputs(I have a Samsung DLP]. Had to really force them into the holes.
I had a really good experience with super cheap component cables for my nintendo wii so I figured surely if I spend more for some "premium" cables for my dad's new blu-ray player I won't be disappointed. Well I was (see cons section). I could be wrong they could be meant for commercial and not residential use because they sure feel like they could handle a beating.
PROS: They do what they say they're supposed to do. I don't see what exactly is "premium" about the cables.
CONS: I don't see what exactly is "premium" about the cables. Extremely stiff and heavy making it difficult to hook into a blu-ray player that sits on top of a tv. The casing around the connection points is too snug, was almost afraid I might break something having to push them so hard onto the tv and blu ray player. Also there were labels on the connection one for video and one for audio but were placed incorrectly on one end (one end said video but when following the cable to the other end it led to a connection labeled audio)
After great difficulty connecting these cables to my cable set top box and my television I had no signal to my television. I went through all the troubleshooting procedures for both my set top box and my television, so I knew all my settings were proper. When I removed the cables from my set top box the connectors in the box pulled apart making the component hook up on my set top box useless. I wouldn't recommend these cables for anyone. I've used many products from Monoprice, and been very satisfied with all of them until this set of cables.
CONS: I could barely insert the connectors into my cable set top box and television. When installed there was no signal to my tv.
I want to love these cables, but they have connectors that are so wide, it makes it hard to connect them to your equipment unless the spacing between the jacks is generous. Additionally, the connectors are SUPER stiff. This is probably by design, but it seems a bit much for a consumer level product.
I would just buy the standard variety if I needed more component cables.
