Hi. Do I need to download or link to WiFi for it to work as a smart device. Basically will it shut down the circuit when the item is turned off?

BEST ANSWER: To set up the device you need 1) a wifi connection & 2) the Stitch App on your smart phone. Once you have programmed the device (eg outlet #1 comes on at 2 PM & goes off at 3 PM, outlet #3 goes on at 6 Pm and Off at 3 AM etc.). The settings will be remembered and executed. Does it retain the settings if unplugged and put in a box for 3 months? Can't say. Will it retain the settings if it has power but no wifi for a year? Probably yes but can't say.

You will need a Google Home or Amazon Alexa device to turn things on and off by voice via WiFi. You need the Google Home or Alexa app on your phone to add this to your device list. Then you can turn each outlet on/off by voice. "Ok, Google, turn on Swtch 3." You do NOT need a hub to use this device.

You have to connect to the same network for it to communicate. You also have to download an app.
You can shut down/start up the individual outlets.
If you lose power, the connections will not reestablish when the power comes back online.
Hope this helps.

Yes, you will need to download "Stitch by Monoprice" app. There you can control each individual outlets which there are 4 total. You can choose to schedule each outlet, name it per outlet so if you have gadgets like Alexa, you can call out those names individually to turn on/off.

After a power outage does the power strip need to be manually powered on like other smart power bars?
Jon M
on May 24, 2022
BEST ANSWER: Yes. The power strip defaults to off if it experiences a loss of power. It would be better if it defaulted to 'last state', which means it would continue to be ON after power was restored, or remain OFF it it was OFF when power stopped.
This is my only complain about about the power strip. It's almost a deal-breaker. Almost.
You can reset it by pressing the round reset button, or by using the app on your phone.

Good question, one thing I can tell you is that my power strip never went out of the daily schedule(turn on/off). I had power outages before (obviously internet is out) but still maintained the schedule right after. Never had internet go out before. Technically most cases the answer is no due to the device having to maintain a clock within but who knows. Am curious are you thinking of disconnecting the internet after you've set it up?

BEST ANSWER: Yes. I have opened and reflashed one of these. I flashed ESPHome onto mine. You will have to solder to the rx/tx/gnd terminals, but they were easy to find. MAKE SURE IT'S NOT PLUGGED IN and you need to supply 3.3v/5v (I don't remember which, but IIRC, it's labelled) to reflash.

Can it be used to power cycle the router it's powering from the app, or does it require a constant network connection?
forrest w
on Jan 1, 2019
BEST ANSWER: The power strip will require a constant network connection to power cycle a router remotely with the app. If a router is plugged into an outlet of the power strip, you would be able to turn the router off remotely with the STITCH app; however, you would not be able to turn the router back on with the app if the power strip is connected to the very same router's Wi-Fi network due to the power being cut off. If you wish to turn the router back on afterward, you would have to manually turn the power strip on by pressing the master switch button.

The answer to the question about using this strip to power cycle a router was a little vague. If I have set up an automated routine to power cycle Plug A, and my router is connected to Plug A, once the automation turns off Plug A, will the automation turn Plug A back on? Or will the automation cycle fail because there is no longer a WiFi connection? Earlier answer to whether the routines depend on the app being open seemed to indicate that once programmed, the device would execute the routines on its own without an app connection. However now it sounds like if the WiFi connection is lost, then none of the automation cycles will function? Please clarify, thanks! :-)
John K
on Jan 3, 2019
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your question. Based on your scenario, Plug A will not power back on because your router was cut off due to your programmed routine to turn the Plug A off which was used to power the router. Because your router is off and the power strip depends on having a constant WiFi connection to execute the commands, it will not be able to ping the command through without WiFi. To clarify the answer about whether the device depend on the app being opened or not is that the STITCH app does not need to remain open to execute the command as long as the power strip is connected to a stable WiFi connection. None of the automation cycles will function if the WiFi connection is lost. I hope this clarifies your confusion.

If the app can connect to Google or Alexa, then you can use this Stitch power strip with the Smart Life app. Also, be aware that this power strip needs the Stitch app to set up with power strip.

For the power strip to successfully operate a timer cycle, it seems to require a wifi connection, as in if my router is powered off by the timer schedule, it will not power on due to not having a wifi connection. But is this a wifi connection to the internet (wan), or simply a connection to the router (lan)? For example, if plug A is set to turn on a lamp at 6PM and off at 6AM, and my router loses connection to my ISP due to an ISP outage at 5PM, there is no wan connection, but my router is still on with local (lan) wifi available (i.e. the status is "connected - no internet" on computer/phone, etc). Would the lamp turn on at 6PM (wifi available but no internet)? If the internet connection is re-established at 7PM, and the lamp has not been turned on, would it turn on, or would it have to wait until the next cycle (day) to turn on?

Mediocre but still worth it?
I own a few Stitch components. I like that theres no hub required. just an app. The app is serviceable. Could be great with more development. I had the absolute worst time connecting this to my network. Seems others have reported the same. Both AP and Wifi is incredibly clumsy. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt then it will work again randomly. Device itself is pretty well made, i even took off the back plate to mount it on the wall. Pretty good design.
The stand alone mini outlets have a "cycle" feature that allows you to quickly and easily setup a 15 mins on, 15 mins off in my case. The powerstrip and its subsequent outlets do not and it took me an eternity to figure out the right combination to get it to do this. (see photo for anyone looking for this in the future). I had to set it up as an automation to fire "at any condition" both being in the "off" position or starting at the beginning of the day.
Honestly i think stitch can be great but there are other vendors (and some of the same manufacturers under different branding) coming out with new stuff all the time. New sensors to truly automate things. Would love to see monoprice really put some backing into this product and make it a power house.
Each time i've reached out to monoprice for tech support on stitch, tweeted requests for info on future products etc. Its been completely silent. I only purchase them because im tech savy and can figure it out and the product is robust enough that it justifies my spend.

ESP8266 inside!
I don't know if they'll keep is this way, and does require disassembly to get to the serial pins, but if you're reasonable with electronics and soldering, you can flash any ESP8266 firmware onto it. I loaded ESPHome and am THRILLED with it. used ESPHome so I could single, double, triple or quadruple tap to toggle each outlet manually, and of course I can control it with Home Assistant now too!
Monoprice: PLEASE don't stop using ESP8266s - It just makes your hardware useful in more places, which means you'll sell more, right?

USB's only work intermittently
I purchased two of these some time ago. The problem with both from the very outset is that the USB ports only work intermittently. You plug a device in and it works at first, and then (for example) you hear the chime on your phone or iPad "dinging" as the power to the USB's comes and goes. I wish I had addressed this with Monoprice earlier, so I could have asked for replacements. I also agree with the previous comments in that the product should come back on automatically after a power loss without having to be turned back on manually via the app. Overall, I think this is a good product and am typically very pleased with my purchases from Monoprice - as I think they offer great bang for your buck.

Would've been great if it worked.
I followed all instructions for the 2 pairing methods to connect to my home network unsuccessfully. At this point it is just a regular power strip which is really unfortunate.

Bad Stitch Strip
I have three of these and one has just randomly stopped working. Ive reached out to tech support over a week ago with no response. The device is getting power however you cant turn the plugs on the app or manually on the switch.
