Z-Wave Garage Door Sensor, NO LOGO

Monitor the status of your garage door using this Z-Wave® Garage Door Sensor from Monoprice!

Z-Wave is an interoperable, two-way RF mesh networking technology used for home automation and security. Battery-powered Z-Wave devices, such as this sensor, "wake up" when triggered and broadcast a Z-Wave alarm signal, which can in turn be used to activate other devices or perform preprogrammed tasks. Any Z-Wave enabled device displaying the Z-Wave logo can be used with Z-Wave devices from other manufacturers.

This sensor is designed to detect angular changes, such as would occur when a garage door is opened. When triggered, the sensor sends a wireless Z-Wave alarm signal, which can be used as a simple alarm or as a trigger to activate or perform other functions, such as turning on a light. It also has a tamperproof switch, which causes a different alarm signal to be sent when triggered.

Can you tell me if the Z-Wave garage door sensor will work with a VIVINT monitored alarm system? I have several Z-Wave items that were purchase/furnished by VIVINT curently connected, including smoke detectors, lighting switches (repeaters), and door locks.

will i be able to open or close the garage with this sensor?
    A shopper on Dec 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, this sensor simply reports the status as open or closed. You'll need to use this in conjunction with another system. In my case, I use this with my Liftmaster (tht has wifi) and a Smartthings hub for opening and closing, and checking status remotely.
Does this mount to the door itself, the track, the frame, or wall near the door? I don't see anything that explains what it actually senses.
    Matt S on Jul 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You mount the sensor on an interior door panel. When the garage door opens, the sensor changes from a vertical position to horizontal, which triggers the sensor. Likewise, it senses a change in orientation when the door closes.
Could this be oriented horizontally (on a swinging gate) to tell if it was open?
    A shopper on Jan 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don’t think it would work. This is a gravity operated switch and it needs to go from a vertical orientation to horizontal orientation to open and close the switch. Swinging sideways would not move the switch.
I’ve heard of other people using a proximity window/door sensor on gates which seems like a better solution.
Will this device tell me if the garage door is open and allow me to close it remotely?
    Gail M on Sep 17, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No. It's nothing more than a tilt sensor used to determine if the door is closed (vertical) or open (not vertical.)
Can this be oriented horizontally (on a swing gate) to tell if it's open?
    Carl F on Jan 10, 2018
BEST ANSWER: No, it is a "tilt" sensor. It has a little metal piece that slides to make contact as the garage door is rolled up. Then slide the other way when the garage door is closed. I dont see a way for it to work on a gate that just swings back and forth.

    Works great with smartthings
Works great. Detected as a generic sensor but I used the device type below to get it to report correctly. https://github.com/FlorianZ/SmartDevices/blob/master/MonopriceDoorWindow.groovy

    PROS: Immediately detected with smartthings

CONS: Doesn't detect motion, just open/closed.

Works Great with Wink Hub 2
I hooked this up to my Wink Hub 2 and it works great! It is very accurate and I have it set up to notify me anytime the garage opens or closes, and I think I set a check to make sure my garage is closed when 10 PM rolls around. Does just what I was hoping, couldn't be happier with my purchase!

    Does not work with WINK
So Wink has confirmed that the garage door sensor does not work with the WINK Hub. This is their issue. Unfortunately I cannot therefore, properly assess Monoprice's device and my review is less about Monoprice and more about Wink.

For anyone looking at purchasing these z-wave devices for the Wink, be advised that the motion sensor works, but not temperatures. The garage door and the smoke alarm both don't work at all with the Wink hub.

Having said that, the sensor linked to the Wink Hub easily. and tilting it makes the Wink hub flash so I know that the sensor work as advertised. Note, there are a good range of mounting options for this device. I am impressed about that.

    See below:

This is Tiffany from Wink support, thanks for reaching out!

Unfortunately, since that device you have is sort of like a 2-in-1, there is no option within the Wink app to have that sort of specification. The thermometer within the motion sensor is something we are not compatible with, therefore, we cannot guarantee full functionality.

The only smoke alarms that are able to connect to the Wink hub itself are the Kidde smoke alarms and the Nest Protect smoke alarm. There is no other way to add generic z-wave smoke alarms to the Wink hub, unfortunately.

When I asked about the garage door sensor:

Ah yes, it's not compatible, unfortunately. We are always working on new integrations, definitely keep your eyes peeled for future updates.

    PROS: Cheap

    Lots of mounting options

    Seems to send a signal

CONS: Doesn't work with Wink Hub, NOT MONOPRICE's FAULT

    Works, cheap, but sometimes glitchy
Did not work with WINK hub, but does work with smartthings. Love this device, and even more so the price, but I've also had it give false (Open) signals. It happens about once every other week. We'll open and close the garage door as we leave and then a couple minutes later I check and the door says it is open again. I circle back but the garage door is actually closed. Pretty frustrating.

I'm using it in Canada, and although I was expecting that I might have some issues in the dead of winter, it's been acting up even when it isn't that cold.

Typically a quick tap on the unit will reset it to the correct status.

    PROS: Works with Smartthings.

    Has several mounting options.

    Fast response time.

    CONS: False (Open) signals

    Does not work with WINK

    Zwave Garage Door Tilt Sensor

PROS: Purchased three of the tilt sensors for my garage. I use a Vera lite zwave system and I configured it under other zwave devices since vera doesn't have a tilt sensor included. This was recognized as a vision product after inclusion. Works great however on letting me know when the garage is activated but you cantbtell if its up or down. Trying to figure out how to make the device reset after it is triggered so I can tell if the door is open or closed. Other than that it was a good buy at the onsale price with coupon.

I gave this 9 stars vs 10 only because at first I could not get the device to indicate a an open/closed status with my Aeon Zwave Stick and Openhab. I was almost about to return it till learning to need to add the device as a member of Controller and setting zwave:masterController = true in the openhab.cfg file.

Now it works great and I add a rules to trigger lights etc when the door open or closes.

    PROS: Works as advertised

CONS: Little tricky to get correct status

    Works great with Almond+
Works fine with Almond+ router. The instructions do not show the correct orientation to attach the sensor to your garage door, so pay attention to that otherwise you will have incorrect triggers.

    PROS: Fairly priced

CONS: Instruction manual could be better

    Works w/Nexia
I was thrilled to see that Monoprice had a z-wave garage door sensor, as they are not easily found.

We have a Nexia (formerly Schlage) based system and the sensor paired without a problem. It is a simple angle sensor that detects whether the sensor is vertical (closed) or horizontal (open). There is a slight glitch in the Nexia interface, but it has nothing to do with the sensor itself.

My only minor complaint is that it has an 'intrusion detection' signal that gets sent whenever the door opens or closes. I'm assuming this occurs when the sensor gets shaken, but our garage door is actually quite gentle as it closes and hardly shakes at all, so the 'intrusion alert' seems to be way too sensitive.

Other than that, the sensor works well and I'm happy with it.

    PROS: Works as advertised

    CONS: Constant Intrusion alerts

    Works Well, Mostly
I bought two of these, one for each garage door. Installation and configuration with a Samsung SmarHub was quick & simple. In operation, one has performed flawlessly. The other always signals the door opening, but at first didn't register the closing, showing Open status even though the door was closed. Lately, it's been 100%. Whether it will continue to function @ 100% is a question.
