Does anyone know whether the Z-Wave Plus Recessed Door/Window Sensor, NO LOGO can be used outdoors? For example, in a side gate leading to the back yard?

BEST ANSWER: I've used the Digital Security Controls (DSC, Canada) version of these in security systems since they were introduced nearly 10 years ago. Because they are mounted in a 3/4" hole in the edge of the door (or in the door frame) the weather eventually does get to them as the weatherstripping of the entry door allows some moisture and humidity to slowly damage the circuit board over a period of years. Now I do live in the New Orleans area and humidity is very high normally so possibly in other areas of the country where the weather is drier, you may never have a problem with copper oxide growing between the leads of the electronic components or destroying the copper circuit boards traces.

If I were to use one of these outdoors, I would seal the circuit board with something. There are a variety of methods. Epoxy, silicone modified conformal coating, nail polish, etc. are some. Google circuit+board+sealant. For the battery connections, use automotive battery grease or a marine grease.

These appear more for indoor use. There are some holes at the top and side of the tube. You could always caulk them or tape them to keep moisture out. There is a small circuit board and battery that goes in that tube so if moisture gets in I wouldn’t be good.

No it is in no way weather tight. You might be able to recess it further than designed and cover it with a thin layer of silicone or something but it would definitely be at your own risk.

Probably not since it would be out of range of your Zwave Network. Plus it would be exposed to the elements. It’s pretty enclosed but moisture would still creep in to the circuit board.

Will this work if installed in a metal clad entry door?
Chris L
on Oct 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes I agree with Mark R's answer, placing the transmitting sensor in the door frame allows the radio frequency signal to radiate easier that if it were sandwiched between the metal cladding of the movable door. However, be careful when drilling into a door frame as electricians often run the 120VAC ROMEX cables on the studs of the door frame. The hole to be drilled for the transmitter is deeper therefore you may run the risk of hitting a live 120VAC electrical line with your drill bit and also requiring an electrician to replace the ROMEX and subsequent repair to your sheetrock wall.

I plan to insert the transmitter into the door headers for my external & garage metal clad doors. I've done reno work and I've never seen wiring run directly through the door header. Horizontally above it, yes but the header is generally 10-12" high. Even if you were to encounter a 2x4 header, you still have door frame + gap + 3-1/2" before you would exit through the top. The hole depth requirement is 65mm (2.6") so I think you should be pretty safe. If you feel the drill bit exiting before 2.75" then stop as there might be a wire next! YMMV...

I had problems with installing this in an exterior door that is clad in metal. With the sensor in the door and the magnet in the door frame the sensor would not work. I reversed the installation (sensor in door frame and magnet in the door) and the sensor began to work. I installed two in this way and both are working great.

Any chance you can hardwire these?
Scott B

BEST ANSWER: These look identical to the Recessed Wireless Alarm Contacts sold by Digital Security Controls (DSC, Canada). Being familiar with those, the Magnetic Reed Switch (small, black rectangle with gold-plated leads exiting out the long end) is a Normally Open switch that closes on proximity to a magnet. Therefore you should be able to carefully remove the reed switch and run leads to an external set of contacts. Be sure that external switch presents a "Closed Circuit" when things are in the "normal" condition and likewise the external switch is an "Open Circuit" when a violation occurs. This is entirely Surface-Mount Technology and components are very small, but more importantly, copper circuit board traces are thin and fragile - easily damaged by the heat of a soldering iron. You could leave the original reed switch on the circuit board and run your external leads from those of the reed switch for convenience. But do not place a magnet anywhere near the circuit board as the original reed switch will present a closed circuit defeating any external wiring that you are connecting.

I highly doubt it. Even though the battery terminals are accessible powered by a 3v 123 battery, the working portion is embedded in the door itself and not in the door frame. I have had my unit installed over 6 months and the draw on the battery is negligible even with mutiple entries daily on the door. The initial battery is still installed and replacement when necessary, is pretty easy.

I've got some of these. They're certainly not designed for that and I can't imagine not just buying one that's designed for that if that's what you're looking for. However, if you're handy with a soldering iron, you can see the board and with a multi meter, I'm sure you could find some pins that trigger voltage when a door/window opens.

Does anyone know if, and how long of a delay there is when using this with a smartthings hub? I want to use this to turn on lights when a door opens. Was curious to know how much of a delay there is between setting off the sensor and getting a desired action.
Punit M
on Jun 12, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I feel that the delay is fairly short. I have these door sensors and others around the house, one is outside on my shed some 70 feet away or so. When I open the shed door the readout on my phone is not perfectly instant but fairly instant. I might guess combined with turning on a light in response to this might take 250ms to 500ms. Maybe up to a second in extraneous conditions. There are so many variables though so it's hard to tell. Just my guess.

How long is the battery life?
A shopper
on Dec 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I've used the original version of this sensor made for Digital Security Systems (DSC) of Canada professional security systems. Because it uses a Lithium battery, I've had these used in wireless security systems on the main entry door of residences and businesses which opened and closed several times a day and gotten 3 to 5 years of service life from the battery. Now with the DSC version, it was polled periodically throughout the day for supervision and battery status so that the home or business owner would get an alert at the alarm system keypad of a low battery condition with about a 7 day advance warning before the battery would fail to power the electronics. I don't know if this Z-Wave version performs the same.

Anyone else have issues with installing with a SmartThings Hub? The Z-Wave sensor connect with a SmarThings Hub properly but shows it continually 'Open' . It found the device, shows 100% battery but will not change or update between 'open' and 'closed'. Steps taken: Paired device through SmartThings, device found, assembled device, and device light flashes when the magnet is placed properly and when removed. Either way, the status within the SmartThings hub shows 'open'. I have one device installed in a door. The second device is about a foot from the hub (fully assembled, with cap, battery and magnet as if 'closed) and neither will update within the hub. Besides pairing the hub, is there a step I need to add, change or delete that will allow the sensor to update when the magnet is in the 'open' or 'closed position?

BEST ANSWER: I would suggest attempting to remove the device, then adding it back to the network. Oftentimes with many Z-Wave devices that'll fix all the problems for me. I have several of these in my house and they've all been working great with my SmartThings hub.
You might also want to try to repair your Z-Wave network after they've been paired and installed. Pairing is always easiest right next to the hub, but repairing the network helps them communicate once they're installed.

A) Make sure to pair it within a couple feet of your actual hub. When it discovers as a "Z-Wave Plus Door/Window Sensor" then its correct.
B) It may show open until you pop the "lid" on it, there is a tamper switch of some sort inside that doesn't allow it to show closed until the cap is put on it.
I have these on three entry doors and once I did the above all three worked fine.

Can the sensor be mounted both vertically and horizontally? I want to put it horizontally on the side of my door rather than vertically on the top of my door.

on Mar 19, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, It can be mounted horizontally as long you are able to mount both the sensor and the opposing magnet in the door and door frame. I have a hinged patio door that has a metal locking mechanism thus did not allow me to countersink the magnet so instead I used a thin, very strong rare earth magnet and super glued it to the metal locking mechanism in the door and aligned to the sensor in the door frame. Works perfectly!

What do you do with yours? I see it says "open" "closed" to report states in the Smartthings app. But, that's not really security. Do you have yours setting off alarms? Sending you a text? I bought them thinking "Door sensors!". Which they are. But now what?! I was hoping to use them as part of a security setup. But didn't think past "door sensors!". Duh.

BEST ANSWER: My Vera thinks this is a Vision ZD2105-5. IF you Google that, thesmartesthouse has a link to "contact us" if your device isn't listed as compatible with this item, perhaps they'd know. I've had great luck with ZWave standard devices, but I'm using the Vera product which seems more universally friendly.

Tricky to set up but it works
Tricky to set up in SmartThings, but it works. It isn't listed among the device choices in the SmartThings app, but eventually it connected itself, and somewhere along the line Amazon Echo recognized it too. Now it works with Amazon Echo routines.

Sensor used for pantry lights
Product is as described. Install was easy, only issue is the size of hole to support the device. I found that a 23/32” bit worked best for the magnet and 3/4” bit worked best for the sensor. The instructions indicate to use 11/16” bit and to ream the whole a little bigger until the device fits snug. I’m using the sensors to turn off pantry and storage room lights that seem to get left on periodically. I do recommend the sensor, reasonable cost and works well.

Great product for deadbolt sensing
I've purchased 8 of these to monitor doors and gates in my home. I have them linked to a SmartThings hub. They were easy to install and configure with the hub. I have several of them installed on the deadbolts of doors, sensing when the deadbolt is open or closed. I did need to purchase smaller magnets for the end of the deadbolt, but these were very inexpensive. I drilled out the end of the deadbolt by 1/4" to accommodate the magnet, and drilled into the door jamb to accommodate the body of the sensor. Overall, I am very pleased with this device.

Tamper switch fell out after first battery change...
I would normally give this 4 stars, possibly 5, but except for the low build quality. I just changed the battery out on one of the sensors and the tamper switch just fell out... now the sensor is not connecting to the zwave network and I have no way to reset it. I was going to see if I could get it replaced under warranty, but it is now over a year old and isn't covered.
Be very careful when handling this and don't touch the tamper button or you may wind up with a useless sensor like me.

Great device works with smartthings. 3/4 drill bit works well.
Works great, I used a 3/4" wood drill bit and it fit perfectly. The one thing to keep in mind is the material It is resiessed into will affect the signal quality.
I am using with a Samsung Smartthings Hub alone. I would imagine having a Z-Wave wall switch (since they repeat signal) would be a good idea if the hub is far away., It seems to get about 30ft of range in a wooden door frame.
Still interested to see the battery life and I'll give the full 5 stars. I hope longer life than the smart things multi sensor that has features I do not use like temp and vibration sensing.

Works perfectly
I already have a ZWave Plus network, so these contact sensors work great. I have replaced my Nyce door hinges (Zigbee) with these recessed door sensor and my alerts are now more responsive, and more reliable. I purchase four being optimistic these would work, now all my false alarms while I am away have ceased. I highly recommend these.
