Camera Head XLarge Ball with Plate

Add a professional ball joint head to your tripod or monopod using this Extra Large Ball Fixed Camera Head from Monoprice!

This camera head is constructed of aviation grade anodized aluminum for superior strength and durability, as well as light weight. It features a quick release sliding plate with a patented safety locking system to ensure that your camera does not accidentally fall off the head, even when the QR lever is released.

The sliding plate features a standard 1/4"x20 threaded screw mount and rubber pads to ensure a positive grip on your camera, while preventing any scratching caused by slack in the mount. It includes two levels, one horizontal and the other vertical, so that it can be adjusted for exact leveling whether it is used horizontally, or tilted 90 degrees to one side.

A locking lever on the body locks the ball joint in place, while a corresponding locking knob locks the azimuth adjustment. The base features a mark every 5 degrees of panning, so you can accurately adjust for panoramic shots. The head mounts onto a standard 3/8"x16 threaded head mount screw.

The head is 4.5" (115mm) tall, weighs 19.6 oz. (555g), and supports up to 55.1 lbs. (25kg) of weight.

Seemed decent..But ultimately failed after 3 uses
I used this head exactly 3 times. On the last, I was just trying to remove my quick release like normal and the safety release pin just fell out and the button popped off as well. While I'd like to think I'd just get a replacement, I am extremely worried about trusting this product again with $12,000 worth of equipment on it. Also, the fact that the Swiss Arca (type) mount is just slightly bigger than the real version makes this quick release a pain. I was really hoping to use my other Swiss Arca mounted lenses with this head. Unfortunately, it will just fall off as it's about 1/4" too big/loose.

PROS: Smooth head, Price, Good size

CONS: Broke almost immediately. While the materials feel great and well made, the fact that the "safety" mechanism just fell apart on my 3rd use makes it a NO WAY if you worry about your equipment. It might be ok on a tripod when just set on top. But on my monopod where you carry it with the camera/lens attached, it's too scary for me.

Good basic design let down by shoddy build
This is a big, strong ballhead, but it's rather poorly put together. Mine arrived with scratches on many of the exterior fasteners. The biggest problem is the safety pin that keeps the camera plate from sliding out - the whole mechanism is retained only by a singly tiny M3 set-screw that is not only too short to properly engage the threads, the threads in the ballhead are so sloppily machined that the set screw backs out if you look at it wrong and then the whole spring-loaded mechanism shoots out of the ballhead. Sure, you can still use the ballhead with a missing safety pin, but do you really want to risk your expensive gear?
