Camera Head Large Ball with Plate
Add a professional ball joint head to your tripod or monopod using this Large Ball Fixed Camera Head from Monoprice!
This camera head is constructed of aviation grade anodized aluminum for superior strength and durability, as well as light weight. It features a quick release sliding plate with a patented safety locking system to ensure that your camera does not accidentally fall off the head, even when the QR lever is released.
The sliding plate features a standard 1/4"x20 threaded screw mount and rubber pads to ensure a positive grip on your camera, while preventing any scratching caused by slack in the mount. It includes two levels, one horizontal and the other vertical, so that it can be adjusted for exact leveling whether it is used horizontally, or tilted 90 degrees to one side.
A locking lever on the body locks the ball joint in place, while a corresponding locking knob locks the azimuth adjustment. The base features a mark every 5 degrees of panning, so you can accurately adjust for panoramic shots. The head mounts onto a standard 3/8"x16 threaded head mount screw.
The head is 3.8" (97mm) tall, weighs 16.6 oz. (470g), and supports up to 44.1 lbs. (20kg) of weight.
The quick release system is great when considered on it's own merits. I really could go on and on about the quality of the build and design, but the cons are simply far to much for me to see past.
Monoprice is using a non standard plate and clamp on these ball heads. The clamp bed is easily several millimeters wider than arca swiss or RC-2 plates. The ball head also has a non-standard screw securing the clamp to the ball head, so it makes fitting an arca swiss clamp to it a fidgety process.
Minus 2 for missing features. Minus 1 for Monoprice not detailing this on the product page.
PROS: Quality build and materials
Functions as advertised
CONS: Non-standard plate and clamp system
Not compatible with arca swiss or RC-2 systems
Non-standard bolt securing clamp to ball head
PROS: Solid. Heavy. Does what it should, smooth, adjustable resistance.
CONS: Very minor lash when panning.
Wonderfully inexpensive for the amount of metal and close machining.
