Why buy your band instruments from Monoprice?
Many school band directors reflexively dismiss band instruments made in China, preferring to point parents to the entry-level instruments from the major brands. This ignores the fact that the entry-level instruments from the major brands are also made in China!
The country of origin therefore is NOT an indicator of the quality of an instrument and whether it will sound and play properly. One of the best indicators of an instrument's quality however, is how well the company stands behind their instruments.
Monoprice stands behind EVERY product we sell with a 30-day money back guarantee. If for any reason you are unhappy with your purchase, return it within 30 days for a full refund.
Additionally we stand behind every instrument we sell with a 1 year warranty. If the performance of the instrument changes over time, if you notice a problem that you didn't notice before, if it breaks from normal use, simply return it and receive a new replacement in exchange.
So do not be dissuaded by naysayers, who admittedly have not tried Monoprice Pro Audio products! You can purchase with total confidence that your investment will not be wasted and that the investment will be considerably less than if the instrument wears a major name brand logo.

- Hard-shell Carry Case
The first thing I noticed when opening this flute was the distinct smell of gasoline. The case is very poorly made and is made of materials that are very toxic smelling. This case would not protect the flute very well and likely break with normal use. The case is padded with a Styrofoam type material lined with a black felt-like material. Very flimsy. It also opens in a way that makes it difficult to take the flute out. If this case were sitting on the lap of a student, the flute and/or the case could easily fall during assembly.
When putting the flute together, I noticed that there were scratches all up and down the entire flute. Scratches were on all of the tubing and on top of some of the keys. This flute is most likely made of nickel-plated brass. The bad plating job also makes putting the headjoint and end piece on the body quite difficult. Other bad workmanship issues were: the felt on both Bb key mechanisms in the left hand are cut too big and placed awkwardly on the flute (if it even got caught on anything it would easily fall off cause a leak) some of the pads appear wrinkled and worn in spots - this would cause leaking in the near future.
The flute is a basic closed hole plateau model C flute. After playing it I did not notice any obvious leaks and I was able to get out all of the notes pretty well. Keep in mind that I have a doctorate in flute performance, playing the flute is my profession. If a young student were to attempt to play this flute they would have some issues. First of all, they would have a difficult time depressing the keys - the mechanism is very tough. There is a lot of resistance, especially in the pinky, Ab and trill keys. The pinky key is also very far from the D key making it very difficult to reach the pinky for me - a child’s hand would make it much worse. There is also an extra bar that depresses a key when the E key is played that sticks out quite far. A child with small hands would have a hard time working around this in the right hand, which could cause right hand position issues. Also, the embouchure hole is very sharply cut. I noticed it digging into the bottom of my lip pretty quickly - this would be pretty painful after an hour of playing. In general, the low range was pretty easy to produce, but the high range was very difficult. After 2nd octave C, I felt a lot of resistance. A young student would have issues producing a good sound, if at all, in the high range. Also, the entire range of the flute sounds very “tinny.”
Overall, I would not purchase this flute for a young child. You can get much better made flutes for a little bit more money. Handled carefully, it would not take long for this flute to need costly repairs and since students are not known for handling instruments carefully, expect them sooner rather than later.
The flute comes with each piece in a plastic bag stored safely in the provided case. As other reviewers have noted, the case smellsoff gassing plastic/rubber smells. As was suggested in response to one of the other reviews, I left the case air for nearly two weeks now and the smell really hasn't dissipated noticeably. So I'd say this is the only negative.
PROS: Affordable. Seems to be of good construction. Looks like a decent beginner flute.
CONS: As other reviewers noted, the case strap has a strong chemical smell.
but the rubber on the carrying strap smells!! really bad. It caused everything to pretty much stink up after i put the strap on. Strap is highly likely to be very toxic!
PROS: very well built for the price, seems to play well, person that received it as a gift loved it
CONS: The rubber on the carrying strap smells!! really bad. It caused everything to pretty much stink up after i put the strap on. Strap is highly likely to be very toxic!
Thank you for your review and my apologies for the issues you have experienced with PID 609300. Now I'd like to mention that the odor does go away with time and is in no way toxic. I'd suggest allowing the strap to air out overnight. However, if the issue persists, don't hesitate to contact us! Sorry again for the trouble and hope this helps!

PROS: Reasonable price, good quality
CONS: Case smells bad at first
PROS: Purchased this flute for my kids band class. Sounds great! No issues or imperfections since purchase. Very happy with my purchase...would recommend!
CONS: The Monoprice flute case does have a "chemical" smell initially, however after opening it does go away after a day or two. Flute itself is great!
We did end up returning this as my daughter was past the point of knowing if she was going to stick with it. She rented for another few months and we bought a lower intermediate flute that she will be able to grow into for years.
PROS: Decent sound, key action was good.
CONS: Again, I think if your child sticks with flute, they will outgrow this very quickly. If you are trying it out and don't wan to go the way of the rental route, this flute will pay for itself in 4-5 months (about half the time it will take to figure out if your son/daughter sticks with the flute).
Agree wit h previous reviewer that the strap smell was awful. It took longer than overnight to go away.
CONS: none that I can think of
