What gauge speaker wire works best with these plugs?
    Martin N on Sep 1, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Depends on your application. For Home speakers use a thin gauge speaker wire for best results, If it's for band equipment use a heavy gauge wire for durability and constant hook up and tear down situations. Don;t go too big though as it becomes difficult to fit in opening and solder so connections don't touch. Hope that helps Good luck!

    Very nice!
Some of the better quality 1/4 connectors I've seen. I was building a splitter cable and tried forcing 2 cables through the cover hole (without the spring relief) which did not work out very well because the inside edges of the hole are pretty sharp and tore up the cables beyond repair. Tried using some smaller diameter lower quality cables and had no problems. You probably will have no issues in most standard applications. In a high usage application I'd apply some heat shrink to the end, the supplied spring alone is not going to cut it.

PROS: Great value as usual from Monoprice.

CONS: Spring relief metal is a bit soft. Not very hard to tweak the spring out of shape. Interior of cover edges are sharp but this would not normally be a problem.

    TS Connectors
I really like these connectors. I combine them with Monoprice bulk cable and have great results in the studio or on the stage. Great, all purpose connector and easy to assemble. Plus, I like their looks and the price is right on the money. These are my first choice over all other brands.

PROS: Well made, durable, reliable, good looking, easy to assemble, great price.

    CONS: None

    Great for custom cables
Excellent quality connector. Very easy to install. USed these to make some custom length 1/8" TR to RCA connectors using Monoprice cable.

Pretty good but not up to my standards...
I work for a radio station cluster that uses equipment like this in the street on a daily basis. I ordered 24 of these to make new speaker cables for our promo units on the street... an effort on my part to save cost over very expensive brand name connectors in a non-critical application.

I have two problems with these plugs...

When soldering the cables I felt very good about the construction... It felt very solid. However after making a few cables I got a dead short on the cable tester. I was able to deduct that it was the connector's shield had made contact with the "tip" conductor in the plug and had created a dead short on my cable. I started to test impedance with a Fluke and realized it only happened as I was crimping down the wire to the strain relief... a standard operation with this plug. I saw this happen with two other plugs as well.

It was lucky I had a few other Monoprice connectors in our parts bin from a previous project. I still got the job accomplished but I'd like for such an easy to work on connector to have better results. QA needs to be improved.

The other problem stems from the wire spring that works to reduce strain on the plug itself. I have seen this several times in the field, using relatively skinny Belden BL-5000 wire. The spring likes to get inside the connector, making the possibility for a dead short when plugged into a speaker. This would only be a problem with smaller diameter wire like the Belden I am using.

The spring is fine, as it would happen with any other cable and plug combo. Monoprice SHOULD look into the other issue of crimping down the strain relief. It isn't up to par that the simple act of terminating a cable would create issues.

PROS: Connector is very easy to solder.

CONS: Had several short out after crimping down the cable relief.

    Great cable
Initially bought to go from mixer to amp for monitors. Bought longer version later and now use these as instrument cables. They connect nice and snug, keep the sound clean and noiseless, and are very flexible for moving around (guitarists). Easily comparable to higher end brands five times the price.
