Will this pedal work as a clean boost?
    A shopper on Jan 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Sort of. With the level all the way up, you can get a little bit of clean boost at low gain settings. Turn the gain enough to get lotsa boost and you get distortion. I would not recommend this pedal for clean boost, unless you want to open it up and modify it.
Will this pedal also work as a clean boost? Has anyone tried that? I have an OD pedal (digitech cm-2) but even with the gain turned turned all the way down, too much gain gets through to use as a clean boost.
    Rodney S on Jan 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: No, even at minimal gain there is some drive. Look at the 611612 EQ Booster Pedal. It is very clean and transparent. I use it as a pre-amp for my piezo acoustic nylon guitar.

    Meets my (modest) standards
For the little bit that I have tested it, this pedal gets a range of overdrive sounds from a little "dirt" or "grit" for classic rock to full-on "crunch" distortion for hard rock or light metal. This was the most important criterion for me, as I dislike pedals and want one overdrive box that can do it all. The true bypass is an important feature, too. Other than that, it's simple and the price is right. Can't yet comment on its long-term durability, but having the aluminum housing is a good sign. I'll be honest that I can't discern the subtle sonic differences between the myriad overdrive pedals out there and the prices vary so wildly. Since they all sound about the same to me, I just opted for the cheap ones, and this Monoprice pedal fit the bill. I think it will satisfy all but the pickiest, audiophile-type player. I gave it 80%, as I'm sure there is room for improvement.

Decent overdrive pedal for the price
It has decent overdrive. Clean and compact. Well made. All the adjustments work as advertised. I bought it for someone else and it cleaner sound than coming from the built-in overdrive settings on his amp. I mean, it's not going to give you that heavy metal sound if that's what you are looking for.

PROS: Decent sound. Well built. Compact.

    CONS: None

    Overdrive Pedal
What a great time to be a guitar player. So many options for great gear at low prices. This overdrive pedal (at less than $20) compares favorably with many pedals costing 5 times as much. Others have mentioned it being a bit noisy when the gain gets cranked, (and it does) but so what! I can live with it. Plus, the tones I dig live in the lower rotation of the drive control. . I wasn't expecting perfection, but this solid, well built pedal has far exceeded my expectations. The quality of the tone far exceeds the price point. I did not need another overdrive, but the price was too inviting. I'm glad I got it though as it works well for my needs.

PROS: Low cost, solid build, sweet low gain tones.

CONS: The only con I can find (as others have stated) is it gets a bit noisy on higher gain settings. Again, not really as issue for me as the lower gain settings are excellent and that works for me!

    Great price, nice overdrive effect
As always, Monoprice shipped promptly. Unit is very solidly constructed. I haven't had it long, but I expect the pedal to hold up well. Price/performance ratio can't be beat.

    Can"t beat that price
No one has an over drive for 18.50 so I figured even if it sucks what am I out. If it was anything better then sucks, then I scored. If its good then bonus., score double bonus. Better then good so I'm happy. Dose just what you want an over drive to do, drive the amp. Very happy with my order. the only thing is I wish I didn't have to wait 5 days to get it.

    PROS: Price, Well built

    CONS: none

    Inexpensive and works well
My multi effects pedal shorted out a few weeks ago and I figured I'd give mp a try. Have not been disappointed. And it was inexpensive enough the wife didn't even notice. Hehe...

    Great for the sale price
Definitely a great pedal at the 'sales price' of $18.50. It has metal construction, and is fairly quiet while not playing. It makes a pretty good 'overdrive' sound.

    PROS: Great for the price.

    CONS: No major cons.

Has a good clean boost when placed in proper order with other pedals.
I use a digitech element xp and wanted to boost treble and this pedal works fine for my playing needs.

    Incompatibility with cables
I bought this for my pedal board placing it between the tuner and reverb, connecting to both with Monoprice 601100 8" patch cable. Light wouldn't go on, pedal non-functional. This pedal needs a connection to the input to activate, and none of the four identical cables on hand would work.Curious because I had an older Monoprice 9780 8" patch cable (which they still sell), which has exactly the same description, and it worked fine.

I lost confidence in the pedal and cables and returned both, but you might have a better experience. The pedal is certainly a good value and does what it says, when it works.

    PROS: Good gain and distortion

CONS: Low note roll-off, reduces richness of sound.

    Incompatible with one Monoprice cable

    Response from Monoprice

Thank you for your review. Please note that PID 601100 is designed with different wiring and is not recommended for use with a petal as noted in the disclaimer in the product description. PID 9780 as you have, is intended for use with pedals and recommended for that purpose:

I apologize for any confusion this may have caused. I see you already have an RMA in place. Should you need any further assistance or questions regarding our products, feel free to contact us via live chat or email at tech@monoprice.com . Thank you again for your feedback and hope this helps!
