Does it use laminate construction (laminate top, sides, and back)?
    A shopper on Dec 20, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hard to tell but most likely laminate at this price point. Laminate is not necessarily a bad thing. I have 2 other ukuleles, a Kala and a Washburn. The quality is comparable to them and the tone is good. It is a playable instrument.
What size is the ukelele? soprano, concert or tenor?
    A shopper on Nov 25, 2016
BEST ANSWER: soprano, the most common littlest one. tune G C E A with high G
    How many inches is it?
    A shopper on Jul 2, 2017
    BEST ANSWER: 21 inches

    Another nice Monoprice surprise!
I haven’t ever owned a ukulele before and didn’t know if I would be able to learn to play it. I have a couple of Monoprice guitars and find their price to value ratio to be quite high, so I plunked down a couple of twenties and got myself one of these ukes.
It arrived yesterday evening and I’m writing this as a happy buyer less than 24 hours later.

With no reviews, I didn’t have anything to go on, so it was sort of a gamble, but not the end of the world if I had to ship it back if it was a dud. Let me tell you, I’m quite impressed with this little gem!

The wood is great, putting out a clean, bright sound. It comes with Aquila strings, pretty much a standard in the ukulele world. They’re nylon and hold their tune very well. The enclosed gear tuners look and feel like the brand name ones you’d expect to find on a high-dollar stringed instrument.

The finish is much better than I expected for the price. I can’t find a flaw on it. The headstock and body have a nice satin finish that is not smooth but is pleasant to the eye and touch. The back of the neck is more finely sanded, also with a satin finish. It feels good when sliding your hand on it. The fit on the neck joint at the body is noticeably precise with no unsightly glue blobs. The engraving around the soundhole and on the headstock are classy looking, not any cheesy junk.

The frets are precisely placed with no signs of glue oozing out. The ends are nicely beveled such that you don’t even think about snagging your hand on them. The neck does not have an adjustable truss rod, so I wasn’t sure how I’d like that. The action is a nice height and I don’t think that I’ll need any adjustment to the nut or bridge. The intonation is pretty much spot on.

A word of advice to those who don’t know much about ukes, like me. I had to look up the tuning (the instrument arrived out of tune, which I expected). The standard tuning for a ukulele is G-C-E-A, with the C corresponding to middle C on the piano. I used the piano to get the strings in the ballpark and followed that with an electronic tuner. All was well until I tried fretting the G string. It was OK when played open, but went sharp at every fret. I’m thinking, aw heck, the intonation is bad, I’ll have to send this thing back. An internet search led me to the realization that there are TWO ways to tune the G. If it is a fatter string, then it tunes to the G below middle C. If it is the thinner string, the size of the A string, then it should be tuned an octave higher, the G above middle C. Once I tuned it up to the proper pitch, all was right with the world and I felt like I had stolen this little music-making box. The strings are stretching ever-so-slightly as they get broken in, but this baby holds tune very well!

I could go on, but I’ll just say, this could be the best $40 (regular price, I guess) that you could spend on something that will probably provide a lifetime of enjoyment.. I highly recommend this buy! Get one, get thee to YouTube and get it on.

PROS: Price, fit, finish, sound, tuners, straight neck.

    Tons o' fun!

CONS: Are you kidding? At this price?

solid quality at a price friendly to enthusiasts and parents
Rather amazing construction, finish and sound at an entry level price point.
Monoprice makes it pretty easy to shop and if needed, to return.
Not to mention i cant find as solid a product with this much bang for the buck anywhere else.

My son learns at school and comes home and shares his new jams with the family. pretty cool.
we have 3 ukes now, more needed soon.

    downside? None so far.

    Just an amused observation.
    This thing - It's like the gateway drug;
he's already starting to shop electric guitars - and i cant even play riptide yet lol.

recommended - for sure. Get a few.

    Good value uke
You just cannot question the value of this uke! For $39.99, you get a warm lively tone, nice sustain, frets dressed, good set up, good tuners, a better-than-average gig bag (PADDED nicely), and Aquila strings. Mine was almost in perfect tune. (standard GCEA tuning). I play ukulele all the time, and thought I would buy this to "paint a design." Well, that may not happen as the wood is handsome, and the finish is my preferred mat finish.

    PROS: SO buy it already!!!

    CONS: I got nothin'!!

Super Nice Instrument, and a good buy
This is a great little uke: well made, good intonation, quality tuners and sweet tone. The wood is very attractive and well crafted (no glue blobs, blemishes or separations). I'm really enjoying it. Monoprice should mention in their copy that it's a soprano, though the price should be a giveaway.

    PROS: Tone, workmanship.

    CONS: None, really.

    My Second Idyllwild Uke
I bought this for my wife. It is every bit as nice as the first one I bought from Monoprice, only lower in price! Well finished, smooth frets, geared tuners and a sweet loud tone. And don't forget the excellent padded gig bag that is included. Toy-like ukes at this price point from other vendors don't even begin to compare.

Ordered based on other reviews for my daughter who is in her school's ukulele club. Her instructor said it was a very nice instrument and was very surprised by what we got for the price.

    Worth every penny!
This was exactly as everyone described in other reviews. Nice looking...stays in tune very well...the sapele mahogany sounds great...definitely worth more than I paid. You will not find a better soprano ukulele for this price that includes a gig bag. Buy it!

Great quality, amazing price, fast delivery, comes with case
This is the first Ukelehe I have ever owned and I love it! For the amazing price, it feels like great quality! And it comes with a great case! I bought it for my 5-year old so he could start learning an instrument, (which he is able to play row, row, row your boat), and my husband and I love playing on it as well. It holds its tune nicely, but our kids are good at twisting the tuners slightly so we do tune it often. This has been a great instrument for our whole family to enjoy :)

Excellent value and great sound and quality for the money
I have multiple expensive guitars at home and even spent 300 bucks on a ukulele in Hawaii . That ukulele warped due to the humidity change in Denver.
This $30 ukulele is a gift for my two-year-old son to get accustomed to playing a guitar and I couldn't be happier.
In fact it sounds wonderful great and way more than I would expect for $30. I have spent $30 on a case in the past so this is an excellent value and I would not hesitate to purchase one. I'm thinking about purchasing an acoustic guitar .
