Questions and Answers
THIS WAS PROVIDED AS A REVIEW SAMPLE BY MONOPRICE
Unboxing everything yielded excellent packaging to insure everything stays intact, foam throughout for each item: amp, and speakers. You get a manual, power cord and a Bluetooth antenna, and finally of course the Hybrid Tube Amp itself. Beautiful construction, a bit on the glossy side for some of the outer paneling which will exhibit dust easily overtime and possibly fingerprints. But you're more than likely going to situate it somewhere on a desk, shelf, and forget about moving it for a while. So fingerprints should not be that big of an issue. Just don't caress the sides too much, I know it looks pretty but contain yourself.
The unit has some great heft to it as well, doesn't feel cheap one bit. The 6N2 and 6P15 power tubes are semi exposed, but shielded by a stylish metal frame so you're not accidentally touching them or nicking them on something. I say exposed, but tubes clearly need to breath as they can get warm over long prolonged use. This also adds to the unique aesthetic this amp provides: a mix of classic with modern. It may make you wonder if you should show your Dad or not considering he may want to steal it from you as it may resurface his memories of yore when he was filled with joy upon getting his first stereo system back in the day. Yea, it's pretty, and I love a good mix of vintage and modern any day.
Setting it up was simple. This was paired with Monoprice's 10FT Premier Braided Audio cables and their 4-inch Speakers. This was all bundled under the PID 13807. The amp, speakers, and cables. Everything you need to get setup and listening to your favorite tunes.
So how does it sound. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. Keep in mind, this is a 25-watt amp, and bookshelf speakers. For a small room and maybe even small living room, you can probably get away with most things. However, you won't be hosting a grandiose party or doing your DJ sets via these gadgets. This isn't mean to be blowing you off your seats during a movie either. For what it delivers in it's size, it sounds pretty delicious. Yes, I said delicious. The quality is warm, probably the tube preamp stage doing its duty, and crisp. You may hear a little bit of a fuzz in the beginning, but I've been a musician for 20 years. This is second nature to me, however, this is evidence of the tubes warming up. The fuzz will diminish after 30seconds to a minute, and then I would recommend turning your volume dial up to start enjoying tunes. Synthwave, Rock, EDM, especially some lovely Smooth Jazz. It all sounds pretty great through this little system.
Lastly, the Bluetooth is surprisingly enjoyable as well. Syncing up a device with it was a cinch, and it even audibly lets you know with a rather lovely voice that you've paired with the amp. I'm tempted to ask her out but I don't take rejection well..
I was never quite the fan of Bluetooth audio since there's a lot of degradation in the signal and I always notice fuzz or what's basically data loss in the stream. There's a bit of loss in the low-end frequencies for some music, but not enough for me to complain. Going straight into the RCA jacks in the back for more direct of an audio source is clearly superior in quality, but if you want to quickly sync your phone or a guest's phone that comes over? Go right ahead, its good enough for me.
To add a bit more about quality, let's talk about the speakers and cables. For being just 4-inch monitors, they pack a decent punch, but again you won't be turning up the volume dial to the hilt, they can only push so much and the last thing you want to do is blow them out. I currently have it setup with my computer to enjoy my music, having the speakers directionally at me from either side for a nice stereo experience, and it's lovely. For a den, it's more than enough. Lastly, the cables. They're crafted beautifully. They have an excellent braiding to them, so they're going to last for eons, and since this bundle came with 10FT variants, you'll have more than enough to spare for wherever you choose to set this up.
Final Remarks and Cons:
All in all, this setup is pretty darn good. Its classic looking with a nice modern mix to it. It sounds great, can fit any occasion with its aesthetics and how it delivers clean crisp sound. It would make for a lovely gift for a loved one for their small living room on the shelves (mind you furniture adds to the richness of the sound, hence: bookshelf speakers), or perhaps their dining area as they sip afternoon or evening tea with some Jazz. The only “con”, if you would even consider it one, are about the speakers. Their construction would appear at first to be.. almost toy-like. The enclosure itself is a hardened plastic, not sure it's MDF, but again just appears to be a bit lacking in that regard. That's mostly just an aesthetic thing, because they project very well for their size and for just being 4-inches, the enclosure is a bit large though that only adds to the booming of any low-end frequencies, so I'm glad they're not smaller or it probably would have suffered there.
PROS: Good projection and clarity. Great for a small living area or den.
CONS: The amp is a bit glossy so may have fingerprints adhere easily, but not a big issue. Speakers appear at first glance to be a little cheap in construction, but their performance says otherwise.
Yup. With a multi RCA jack switch, link your turntable, Sirius Radio, HDTV, BluRay, to the Tube Amp via the 'CD' option, and enjoy the sonics. Or stream music from your mobile devices via Bluetooth.
There come few times in anyone's life they face a No-Brainer head-on.
This Combo presents itself for your pleasure, at a price that is unjustifiably and crazily affordable.
I'm a three-thousand-percent happy camper.
PROS: How Pro can you go for two Franklins? Saw the review in the WSJ about this Beyond Best of Class combo. Too late to order. They'd sold out. Bravo! Waiting list. Seven weeks. It finally came! I'm 64, and harda hearing. But with techno and a wanting for the 60s, this Combo is the most fun I've had since, um, nevermind.
CONS: But seriously, folks, the revised Instruction Manual will explain Banana Plugs to your understanding. They're the bananas! Tightest terminal connection you could want. You just need to learn what it takes to make 'em happen.
As for Bluetooth conflicts, that's not the fault of the Combo maker. It's a personal thing. I have seven Bluetooth devices "in the air" and have No problems connecting any of them to the BT switch on the Tube Amp.
Busted tube(s) upon arrival? Aggravating out the wazoo, fer sure. But it may be the fault of staff somewhere down the way to you what drop-kicked your package across the loading dock. Who knew?
PROS: Looks great and has fantastic warm sound. Really enjoyed listening to music on this. Bluetooth connects easily. The speaker and cables are great. Nice living room system.
CONS: I had some difficulty getting the speaker cables into the unit as well as the speakers. I was afraid if I forced it, I would break something. Called support and they just said to push harder. I ended up pinching down the ends with my fingers and was able to finangle the cables in.
My biggest beef was one of the tubes was broken upon arrival. I think I would have preferred to have had the tubes separated when shipping. When calling support they did not have any tubes they could send to replace so my only option was to return the entire unit. I decided to just buy new tubes (was quicker and easier). It was a bummer getting this unit and not being able to use it. I do hope Monoprice gets some replacement tubes in stock.
The included tubes are adequate, and will work for most users at the listening levels this unit is intended to be used at. It does a pretty good job of smoothing the defects inherent in compressed digital music sources.
As for the review slamming the unit for having a compatibility issue with some turntables, it is not a fair criticism. The cartridge on a turn table has always required a pre-amp prior to the actual amp. Older receivers included a special turntable input which had the pre-amp built in. This is a feature that has been dropped on new units like this one, and to use an older turntable you will need a pre-amp.
PROS: Great sound at low volume Bass and treble has an unusually wide spectrum of adjustment. fits right on my desk looks classy (lots of comments from clients and co-workers)
CONS: One of the tubes was cracked and vacuum compromised on delivery. Monoprice sent a new replacement tube within a week.
The book shelf speakers on the other hand, well they are cheap speakers, which I knew going into this. One of the speakers was rattling when I pulled it from the box, two of the screws holding in the woofer had pulled out, I was able to screw them back in, but they would not tighten down. The other bookshelf speaker had one of the grill holding cups fall out, glued that back in.
The speaker cables and connectors are really good in my opinion, tight fit and the braided cables look nice, since I can't really hide them well.

PROS: clear, crisp sound
CONS: modest installation difficulty (speaker cables)
PROS: nice sound, easy to setup, super value for the money, packaged well, arrived in very good shape
CONS: not a huge deal, but the speaker banana plugs are a bit too snug.. Had to crimp them a bit so they did not have to be forced in.
PROS: Great quality to price ratio. Fun to set up in desk environment for close listening
CONS: None so far
