I recently purchased this product and it came in a timely manner. After installing the included batteries I tested the tracer function. As the new IT Manager for my company I have been trying to organize things that the previous manager did not take the time to do. With 3 locations I have 3 racks with 2 routers and 2 switches that I need to label. This product has made this daunting task a heck of a lot easier.
PROS: Functional, Light Weight, Gets the job done.
I have spent thousands of dollars with monoprice at the company I am at and never have I been let down by a product like I was with this one.
PROS: Most the features besides the one I wanted seemed to work but did not really spend much time testing.
CONS: Has a BNC connection so I bought to tone some RG6. I put a 6" piece of RG6 on it to be able to connect it to the wall jack and I could barely hear the tone at the end of that small piece. If you moved the product around sometimes it would get louder but would never stay that way. Tried plugging it into a run that was just over 10ft long and I could not hear the tone at the end.
PROS: It's a great all around piece, very versatile and covers a lot of ground.
CONS: When checking network cables it checks in pairs, therefor if you have a reversed pair it won't show up as bad because it only checks continuity of the pairs, it will tell you if your crossed though.
Much easier to use than the device it's replacing. Certainly does everything I need it to do, which is test and tone RJ45 cables.
My order went missing in delivery. When I contacted Monoprice about it, they shipped a new one immediately. Less than 24 hours after talking to them, I had a new unit on my desk. Unbelievably fantastic service.
PROS: Does exactly what it promises to do. Easy to use. Great price.
This is the first item I've purchased from Monoprice that has not met my expectations. The unit itself feels pretty cheap and although the cable testing feature has worked several times, the tone generator is almost useless given how weak the tone actually is. using the RJ45 jack produces a tone that can be picked up about 50' down a cat5 cable but if you want to use the banana clips to single out a specific twisted pair the tone is so weak it barely works 5' from the generator. If you're like me and need something to work across the house, find another unit.
PROS: Cable tester works well.
CONS: Tone generator is very weak. Is not useable over runs longer than 30' or so.
Multifunction RJ-45, BNC, and Speaker Wire Tone Generator Tracer Tester
I purchased this tool to organize my office network cables. The tone generator/tracer did not work at all. The wand could not identify any cable. All I hear at the wand end was some static buzz. I even used a single test cable and the week audible sound pretty much disappears after a few feet, leaving me clueless. I am planning to see if they have another more useful tool because so far it has been a waste of time.
