Metal Back Can for 8-inch Ceiling Speaker with Brackets (pair)
Adding back cans to your in-ceiling speakers is the easiest and most cost-effective means of improving the quality and volume level of the sound, as well as improving overall installation safety.
Ordinary bookshelf or floor-standing speakers use carefully designed and crafted enclosures to shape and give body to the sound produced by the drivers. However, in a basic in-ceiling or in-wall installation, the driver projects sound without the assistance of an enclosure or, if you will, using the ceiling or wall space as the "enclosure". This space is obviously not carefully designed and matched to the speakers' capabilities.
These metal back cans are designed specifically for use with the 8-inch Carbon Fiber 2-way In-Ceiling Speaker with Magnetic Grille (13683). They are easily installed on the speaker and include a mounting bracket for use with drywall or drop ceiling installations. A safety hook allows you to attach a tether to a secure point, which will prevent the speaker from falling to the ground in the event of a ceiling surface or speaker mounting tab failure.
Best of all, you will get improved sound quality and volume, especially in the bass frequency ranges.

Questions and Answers
Although we do not have information on the gauge of the wire in the metal can, the short run from the back of the can to the speaker would not cause issues. I hope this helps.

- EXTREMELY strong brackets
CONS: NOTE: Ultimately these are the reasons for a '3' rating
- Although the speakers are intended to accept up-to 14 AWG cable, the cans have a jumper from from their terminal block to the speaker that uses 18 or 20 AWG cable and it's soldiered to the block! I'm going to de-soldier and replace with 14 AWG since my receiver is almost 50' away from the speakers themselves.
- This may be better suited as a "Con" for the speaker, but there is a removable sealed port on the speaker that should probably be removed when used in conjunction with these cans however, it doesn't state anywhere in the instructions (for the speakers or the cans) when or for what reason to remove this port.
= The cans are constructed of metal! Realistically, plastic or composite is a far better material to build a speaker component like this. It is very likely that IF the aforementioned port is removed, harmonics from the metal can will be audible at higher volumes.
1. The installation instructions are kind of silly. They are literally to superglue the can to the speaker. Other Monoprice speaker/can combinations actually screw in. This strikes me as a little lazy.
2. These are kind of a pain to install. While they "fit" the speaker, in my experience, half of the units were a little bent/warped so they didn't "just fit." I had to push and bend the metal around to get it to the right angles to fit correctly on the speaker. Not a huge problem, but it does slow down the install. Of course, because these are metal, you also have the speaker's magnet fighting with you the whole time, trying to pull the can to itself. More of an annoyance than a problem.
3. As other reviews have mentioned, the jumper cable from the block to the speaker is quite thin. I choose to believe this is ok, because if you look at the speaker post-PCB, you will see a similar gauge wire for all the internal connections. That said, in a perfect world, I think there would be a heavier gauge wire here.
In the end, they work. They will keep stuff out of the back of your speaker, and don't appear to change the sound at all. But they're not as high quality as other cans for other Monoprice speakers. Still, if you have these speakers going into the ceiling, you should probably buy them.
I mounted 8 inch ceiling speakers with cans without the full brackets. I slid the metal circle pieces in between the tabs and the ceiling drywall to act as shims to spread the force applied by the tabs. My method was... Cut the hole Put the circle up into the attic (it's a great shim) Adjust the circle so it doesn't interfere with the tab movement Push speaker up through the hole Tighten the tabs The tabs will pinch down on the metal circle, which spreads the force. Works great! No need to use the bar pieces. Those seem to be more for drop-down ceiling tile installations. My 8 inch with cans are heavier than the 6.5s. Again, it worked great. No issues, very solid and great sound. Finally, you'll need a tube of silicone caulk, per the instructions.
