    Is the grill magnetic?
    James H on Nov 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The whole grill is not magnetic, but metal. However, there are small magnets on the speaker about every 3 inches or so that the white cover is attached to. The magnets are what keeps the cover on.
Can I use a custom backer box or a dynamat en-wall with these? I’m looking to install them in a wall that adjoins a bedroom.
    New User U on Nov 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can use either. I am working on a project to get full speaker specs together for for our DIY'ers to build their own cabinets for our in-wall and ceiling speakers.
How would these work in the ceiling for atmos height speakers? I wander how the dispersion would be with the ribbon tweeter. I'm using the 3 way ambers for front LCR channels. Would these just be overkill or would it be worth it to match all speakers? Anyone doing this same setup?

Monoprice Amber In-Wall Speaker 6.5-inch 3-way Carbon Fiber Column with Ribbon Tweeter (each)
BEST ANSWER: Full disclosure: I don't have these in use for a matched atmos setup. As for ceiling mounting these speakers, IMO they are a bit heavy for that. I use them as rear surrounds and highly recommend them for that purpose. For ceiling mount speakers, the caliber series should be more than sufficient and are quite a bit easier on the wallet. Personnally, I wouldn't trust the mounting tabs to hold these in any type of ceiling, especially if you plan on pumping a lot of volume out of them. But ultimately all this is your call. If you do what you are proposing, and can support the weight of the speakers, you will be quite happy with the results, but will have spent more than is necessary for similar outcomes. Best of luck to you!
I want to use these in a wall with sound dampening. Can I use a custom made backer box with these speakers?
    A shopper on Nov 10, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, you can. I am working on a project to get full speaker specs together for for our DIY'ers to build their own cabinets for our in-wall and ceiling speakers.
Can this be mounted in a ceiling, or would a box be required for ceiling installation? Otherwise, which in-ceiling speaker to to recommend to go with this?
    Mark K on Nov 8, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Should mount fine in the ceiling. The only thing that would concern me is the limited dispersion pattern of the tweeter.
Is the ribbon tweeter orientation specific? If I wanted to mount these horizontally, would that not work due to the tweeter orientation? Or is the tweeter able to be rotated?
    James Y on Jun 18, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for your interest in these speakers. The tweeter will not rotate. They are designed to be used in the vertical orientation.
What is the Xmax of the woofer? I'm looking to add a box with passive radiators. Thanks!

BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your interest in this in-wall speaker. You have inspired me to collect data for all of our in-wall and ceiling speakers. We have a lot of DIY'ers who will benifit from this info.

I am thinking about buying this to put in a rebuild of an antique Stereo cabinet. Would this be a good choice? Should I buy 1 or 2. The cabinet is about 30"X30"
    New User U on Aug 2, 2017
BEST ANSWER: You would need two for a stereo environment if your cabinet has room for them. I purchase 4 pairs of various round and rectangular speakers all with the same size of woofer and this model sounded the best of all of them,.
How do these compare to the Caliber (6816) version?
    A shopper on Jul 11, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your interest in this in-wall speaker. The aluminum driver will hit harder while the fiber of the 6816 is a little warmer. Mids are very similar. Ribbon highs are much smoother and crisper.

    Unbelievable clarity!
Absolutely amazing clarity from the ribbon tweeter! With the volume vey low, you can still hear every detail from the back of the room. Impressive! They look so good I want to leave the grills off!

PROS: Superb accuracy and very solid construction.

CONS: Crossover switch is on the back of the speaker. I can see how it made the build simpler, but it was a pain taking the speakers in and out of the wall to see which setting sounded best.

Wow....Amazing. DO NOT hesitate to purchase these speakers.
I looked at these speakers for about 2 months before finally purchasing them. So, to be completely honest, I really thought that Monoprice was deleting negative reviews. But I decided to give the following speakers a try ( 2 sets of Alpha In Ceiling Speakers 8 Inch Carbon Fiber 2-way (pair), 2 Amber In Wall Speaker 8-inch 2-way with Ribbon Tweeter (single), 1 Alpha In Wall Center Channel Speaker Dual 5.25 Inch Carbon Fiber 2-way (single), and 2 Amber 6.5-inch Carbon Fiber 3-way In-Wall Column Speaker with Ribbon Tweeter (each).) I purchased these speakers for a Dolby Atmos Home Theater set up. I have these speakers connected to a Onkyo TX-RZ810 receiver. I cannot say enough good things about these speakers. They are very Crisp, and have a very clean and clear sound. The speakers look absolutely amazing as well. I wish I could upload some pictures to show how well they look. I would not hesitate on purchasing these speakers. You WILL be satisfied.

PROS: Great Speakers, Great Price, Look beautiful

CONS: These speakers DO NOT have magnetic grills .Monoprice states that they are Magnetic, but they are not. Shipping is higher than it should be. (Not really a default of the speakers, but I wish Monoprice would have better shipping rates)

Best sounding ceiling speakers ever...especially after boxes were added!
I installed a set of these as ceiling speakers in our main living space. They were an upgrade for a set of 8" Monoprice Caliber speakers that we installed several years ago. I was always happy with the Calibers, but the improvement in sound is incredible! I now hear things that I never knew were there, in songs I have listened to for years. I cannot overstate the incredible clarity and accuracy provided by the ribbon tweeters. Unbelievable at this price point.

These speakers absolutely need to be broken in, more so than any others I've used. Initially the sound was tinny and even piercing at higher volumes, and a spectrum analyzer showed gaping holes in the mid-range frequencies. In some rock songs, distorted rhythm guitars and backing vocals could barely be heard.

After about 2 months (80-100 hours total listening time), the sound quality improved dramatically, becoming much warmer and full, and the spectrum analyzer showed a surprisingly even and flat frequency response.

After using them for several months, the only thing missing was the bottom end that I know 8" woofers should be capable of providing. So, I calculated and built tuned and ported cabinets for them. The difference was unbelievable! They sounded great before, but with tuned/ported boxes, these speakers absolutely came alive! I would never expect ceiling speakers to have a soundstage, but if you stand in the right place, the sound is incredibly transparent and dynamic. In a house filled with way too much audio gear, I can't believe that a set of ceiling speakers are currently providing my favorite listening spot.

Also, for those who are concerned about tweeter dispersion, I wouldn't be. These are mounted in 11 foot ceilings, and the sound is still incredible even 15 feet off axis.

Pros: Surprisingly transparent and accurate sound

    Amazing sound
I initially had two of these in my cart, but after reading the reviews of the tremendous sound (and also being a bit skeptical of reviews), I went with one just to ease into the purchase. Holy crap, this thing is amazing. It's currently in the ceiling of my 25'x35' garage and it sounds absolutely amazing. I couldn't imagine needing a second one - I haven't even pushed it to it's limits in volume. Highly recommend.

    Awesome speakers
Great little speakers. Sound great in a fairly large room. Wish they had magnetic grills though...

    Great clarity as Front Surrounds
I used the template to cut into the wall, a bit scary. Was careful running the screws in and out of the plastic clamps as suggested by that others have broken one or two of these . Working them by driving the screws in and out of the clamps once before installing.
    These sit nice and flush.

Sound very clear and defined even at low volumes.

You do have to use the little wire clip to pull the grills off. They come with a little adhesive to apply to the speaker front to help keep the grill on. I have not had a grill fall off in the 3 months I've had them up.

    Great speakers. Great value.
Don't have them wall mounted yet but tried them out in the open just to test the ribbon tweeters. Not disappointed. The airy highs sound amazing. Quality of components looks very good as well. Can't wait to mount them but so far I am very impressed with the quality and value. This is starting to sound boring but.....Well done Monoprice (as usual)!!

Haven't had a chance to do much more than bench testing yet, but these speakers look great and appear to be constructed very well. I did confirm that it is a true ribbon tweeter which at this price point is amazing.
