Driver specs for 13686-
PROS: Superb accuracy and very solid construction.
CONS: Crossover switch is on the back of the speaker. I can see how it made the build simpler, but it was a pain taking the speakers in and out of the wall to see which setting sounded best.
PROS: Great Speakers, Great Price, Look beautiful
CONS: These speakers DO NOT have magnetic grills .Monoprice states that they are Magnetic, but they are not. Shipping is higher than it should be. (Not really a default of the speakers, but I wish Monoprice would have better shipping rates)
These speakers absolutely need to be broken in, more so than any others I've used. Initially the sound was tinny and even piercing at higher volumes, and a spectrum analyzer showed gaping holes in the mid-range frequencies. In some rock songs, distorted rhythm guitars and backing vocals could barely be heard.
After about 2 months (80-100 hours total listening time), the sound quality improved dramatically, becoming much warmer and full, and the spectrum analyzer showed a surprisingly even and flat frequency response.
After using them for several months, the only thing missing was the bottom end that I know 8" woofers should be capable of providing. So, I calculated and built tuned and ported cabinets for them. The difference was unbelievable! They sounded great before, but with tuned/ported boxes, these speakers absolutely came alive! I would never expect ceiling speakers to have a soundstage, but if you stand in the right place, the sound is incredibly transparent and dynamic. In a house filled with way too much audio gear, I can't believe that a set of ceiling speakers are currently providing my favorite listening spot.
Also, for those who are concerned about tweeter dispersion, I wouldn't be. These are mounted in 11 foot ceilings, and the sound is still incredible even 15 feet off axis.
Pros: Surprisingly transparent and accurate sound

These sit nice and flush.
Sound very clear and defined even at low volumes.
You do have to use the little wire clip to pull the grills off. They come with a little adhesive to apply to the speaker front to help keep the grill on. I have not had a grill fall off in the 3 months I've had them up.
