    In-Ceiling Back Enclosure (Pair) for PID 4104 , 8" In-Ceiling Speaker

Improve the sound quality of your in-ceiling speakers using these In-Ceiling Back Enclosure from Monoprice!

This flame-resistant ABS enclosure is designed for use with the Monoprice 8-inch Fiber 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers (PID 4104) or other speakers with the same dimensions. Using an enclosure improves bass response and the overall sound quality will be tighter and more focused.

The enclosure has pre-stripped and tinned wires inside for connecting to the speaker. On the outside it features 10mm push terminals to connect the speaker wires from the amp. It measures 9.6" in diameter and is 6.5" deep. It includes four speaker mounting screws and a piece of acoustic stuffing.

Will this enclosure work for the Caliber In Ceiling Speakers 8 Inch Fiber 2-Way with 15° Angled Drivers (pair) Product # 4929?
    New User U on Nov 22, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hello, thank you for your question. No, this flame-resistant ABS enclosure is designed for use with the Monoprice 8-inch Fiber 2-Way In-Ceiling Speakers (product # 4104) or other speakers with the same dimensions including mounting depth.
Is there a back enclosure that would work with these speakers? I prefer the magnetic grill of the black back version vs the PID 4104 version. I also prefer the lower frequency response compared to the Alpha series for this particular location, otherwise I'd just get the Alpha series since there is a back enclosure kit for that model.

BEST ANSWER: Standard speaker measurements can show frequency response as -3db and -10db. At one point we wanted to show the conservative number as -3db, 70Hz. Since almost all of our competitors use the better looking -10db, 50Hz, our team decided to use the 50Hz on the graphic. My -10db rating was still in the text. Both the Black Back and Alpha 8" ceiling speakers have the same low frequency range of 50Hz @ -3db and 7-Hz @ -10db. The Alpha series with the backcan will give you the performance you need with the more stylish magnetic grill. Thank you for bringing this issue up, we will correct the description so no one else is confused.

    Misleading Description
The description says these are designed to fit PID4104 or other speakers with the same dimensions. I bought these for the PID4929s I purchased, which are 8 inch speakers from Monoprice, but these do not fit those speakers. Now I have useless enclosures that I have to pay to ship back. The description needs to be changed to say these do not fit PID4929. There is nothing obvious about the "dimensions" of that speaker that keep it from fitting, it's just not designed for this enclosure.

I've talked with Customer Service twice. Both times they have argued with me about the word "dimensions", trying to say that the description is correct. Just change your description to be more specific so someone else doesn't order these for PID4929 or other 8 inch speaker.

    PROS: Look nice, solid quality

CONS: Would expect these to fit another 8 inch Monoprice speaker unless specifically told it doesn't.

Almost a great product, but not quite
This is really just to second comments from others. They fit the 4104 well. My speakers sound good with these though. That said, I didn't notice a profound difference. Nonetheless, they seem solid enough.

Downsides are there were no instructions on where to put the insulation pad (I just centered them over the back of the speaker which I think is about the only place that makes sense), I also use high quality 12 gauge monoprice speaker wire as it runs a long distance, and it didn't fit in the push terminals. I eventually kind of got the wire crammed in there enough and the speakers work, but this was a disappointment to say the least and at some point I'll probably need to reseat the wire using an 'upgauging' band-aid to fit properly in the terminal. Also, the interior wires that connect from the enclosure to the speaker should be a lower gauge wire as well. They are really thin!

PROS: Good housing for the 4104. Insulates and focuses sound. Solid plastic enclosure. Good idea.

When putting these on the 4104 speaker, the housing didn't really line up quite properly until I had all the screws in and tightened. Don't be surprised if it looks like the enclosure is just slighly off from fitting exactly- but don't worry. Once the screws tighten it fits perfectly.

CONS: Terminals aren't large enough to fit low gauge wire.. If someone's buying these they care about sound and quality and may likely have a lower gauge setup.

Cables connecting enclosure to speaker are too high a gauge IMHO, Should be better quality.

No instructions as to what to do with the insulation.

Didn't detect a huge difference in sound quality, but it all in all sounds good and focuses the sound in the right area.

    5/5
I would highly recommend these if you have blown-in insulation. Install these first on the speakers and then put the whole unit into your ceiling. If you try to do it the other way, you will run into problems. I found no other solution to blown-in insulation at anywhere near this cost.

PROS: work very well and sturdy

CONS: a little tricky to install, directions could be a little clearer

    Must-have for the 4104s!
These back enclosures are an exact perfect fit for the PID 4104 speakers. Installation was straightforward. I installed the enclosure on the speaker prior to installing the speaker in the ceiling. The supplied square of poly-fil is rather inadequate, so you'll want to have some kind of acoustic treatment material to put inside the enclosure to get the best sound.

I subtracted 1 star for having to add additional acoustic material and also for the thin internal jumper wire.

    PROS: 1. Build Quality
    2. Sound Quality (with supplemental acoustic treatment material)

CONS: 1. The internal jumper wiring is thin (20AWG?). Could be easily upgraded, except the connectors were epoxied onto the posts.
    2. Speaker terminals will barely accommodate 14AWG speaker wire.

    Bad connections, cheap wire
The push connectors on these are horrible - the speakers support 12ga, but these only accept 14ga and even with 14ga half of the very tightly twisted strands don't make it in. Also, the wire that connects the back box to the speaker is probably 20ga (at best).

    PROS: Solid
Keeps sounds from being heard above the room

    CONS: Push connector is junk
    Wire is junk

    perfect fit
I don't know how the other review said these boxes made the sound worse. If that's true the 8" speaker must sound unbelievable without the backing. I didn't test both with the backing on and off. I installed these in the attic above my living room as the 4 surrounds. I installed 4 of these on 4 speakers and every one fit perfectly. Not close - perfect. They attached with the screws provided and snugged right onto the back of the speaker. The terminals on the case did take a 14 gage wire ( barely ). It was a snug fit but it did fit. The wire inside the enclosure ( from the binding post to the speaker ) was a bit small. 18 gage would be my guess but it was the exact right length to land on the speaker terminal. I used the batting that came with the enclosure.

Once my installation was done I used the test tone on my Denon to make sure they were wired right then fired up the Hulk buster scene from the Avengers. These speakers were far more than I expected them to be and the enclosure made the sound really nice. I cant say for sure that they improved the sound over no enclosure but my surrounds sound great. I would recommend the enclosure.

    PROS: perfect fit

    CONS: none

    Works Great
The enclosure fit well with the Monoprice speakers and was easy to install and disassemble if needed.

    Fit 8
These enclosures fit perfectly and stop the sound from coming in to your attic space. The fit the speakers perfectly. I did not have a problem with the connectors and while I agree the little pigtail seems small it does work. There was sealer included with the speakers but it was not enough to seal two speakers to the enclosures. I ended up using some silicone in the groove of the enclosure to get a good seal. There is also a small piece of insulation included with each enclosure but the instructions do not tell you where to use it.

PROS: Work well with proper Monoprice speakers
    Connections seem OK to me

CONS: No instructions telling me where to use the included insulation

    Great piece of kit!~
After I bought the 8 inch in-ceiling speakers and installed them...I immediately knew I made a mistake not purchasing covers for them. I consider getting the old table saw and some plywood out, but decided to drop the $40 on this set. They arrived and I was quite impressed with the quality of these. Sure they are just plastic domes, but I beleive they'll last longer than me, they have a pass through wire, with push button pin connectors for my speaker wires right on top and they even include the screws that match perfectly the empty screw holes on the back of the speakers. I think, (I'm no audiophile), they actually gave these rear channel speaker just a little more 'thickness' since I installed them, Very happy and recommend if you do buy 8" ceiling speakers, go ahead and get these when you purchase them. You'll only windup getting them after you install. :-)

PROS: Very heavy duty material. I like the pass through connectors. Speedy shipping and about $30 cheaper than what my local guy wanted.

    CONS: none.

    Makes speakers sound terrible
In ceiling speakers that do not have back boxes on them already are designed to be used without back boxes. Putting these on the speakers make them sound terrible. I was not happy with the enclosures, and wanted to return them but I had to pay return shipping. Now they are just sitting in a box.

PROS: Keeps insulation out of speakers.

    CONS: Terrible sound!
