Full disclosure, this unit was sent in trade for an honest review of the unit.
Much of this review is similar to my PID: 13083 review.
The Select Series Power Bank 13085 arrived in a plain cardboard package. Opening the box reveals a product information card with instructions on how to use the device. Under a flap was one USB/mini USB cord to be used with the unit. Picking the unit up you are going to become immediately aware the weight of the item. It weighs a documented almost 1 LB and it's all of that alright.
It has a quality build feel, and two tone white & gray color scheme. While it fits it's most common consumer target, I'd have liked to see other colors available. Like black & red or more.
Giving the unit a average toss and letting it slam on a tile top table outside, it yielded no impact bruising or deep scratches. So it's seems fairly durable. Pushing the button on the unit twice turns the flashlight on ( repeat to turn off). While it's completely serviceable as a light , it's no mag lite. Think like the cheap key chain pin lights you buy x 10. Again it works, and is bright enough for seeing where cable plug ins are etc, but not a true flashlight.
Out of the box I got 2 full charges on my phone and one charge on my wife's. Phones are Note 3 and Note 4 respectively.
The Power Bank will charge 2 devices at once, sadly one port is 1.0 a. Most of today larger phones can now draw 2.0 for fast charging. It would be nice to see both ports capable of doing 2.0 A. The led charge lights are little brighter than necessary in my eyes, but it's nothing to obtrusive. Dual cables would have been a nice touch with this unit based on it's size and intended purpose.
For it's first recharge I connected the unit to a power bar that had dedicated USB ports rated for 5V 2.1A. Monoprice recommends that you ONLY use up to 2.0 A though, so double check your chargers output Amps. From flat dead to full charge I timed a 2.5 hr charge time. Switching to the recommended 2.0A input charge yielded roughly same recharge time.
My test method was same as the 16000 mAh unit and was as follows. Use to phone until receiving low battery warning (in this case 15% left) Plug in Power Pack and continue with normal phone activities until fully charged. Rinse & repeat. Now depending on what you run on your phone , your mileage may vary. I use nothing but Wi-fi, Sync and multiview and 50% brightness with 2 minutes screen timeouts. Results?
I was able to get 2 full recharge to my Note 3 (3200mAh battery) based on this scenario and 1-1/2 charge. Overall I'm very surprised and pleased with how quickly it will charge my phone as well. On par with my wall charger.
If you are looking for what to appears to be a rugged and well built power bank, I really don't see how you could go wrong with this unit. I will be recommending this unit to anyone who even whispers they need a backup battery or portable charger. We spent 4 days in Vegas relying on this unit as we were house hunting and on the go all the itme and it didn't let us down and we were extremely grateful to have it with us. I can't stress how much this is one of those products you didn't realize you need, until you have it. I love not being tethered to a charger anymore and never worrying about my phone dying. Thanks Monoprice!
Hope this review was helpful!
PROS: Esthetically pleasing. Built in LED lights for charge level. Built in led flashlight. Dual port charging. Hard shell, scuff & minor impact resistant. Good charge capacity. Quick recharge (2.5hrs) , compact enough to be a non hassle on the go.
CONS: Blue Led can be a little bright at times. No second cable.
PROS: Works decent was expecting a little more power.
CONS: Came with a power cable but not a plug, flashlight doesn't work which is not really a big deal given that I don't need a flashlight on my charger, I have a Samsung Note 3, I will get a bout 50% charge in about 35-40 min, I have not yet gotten a full charge but I havent left it more than 40 minutes. If I am using the phone while charging it seem to be using all the chargers energy so I get no charge during phone usage. I would recommend if asked but I would not go out of my way to do it..
PROS: Has reserve power, simple to use, does the job.
I tested this battery pack with three different devices:
- Verizon Moto G – Android device with a 2070 mAh battery
- iPhone 3GS – iOS device with a 1220 mAh battery ( I now use this as an iPod)
- T-Mobile Nokia 521 – Windows device with a 1430 mAh battery
I started with the Android device and it was completely dead when I plugged it into battery pack, after first charge the battery back still had 75% of power left (3 out of four lights). The second time I charged two mobile devices at the same time, until both batteries were full. One was my iPhone at 10% of battery and the other was my Windows mobile at 20%, per indicator on my battery pack there seemed to be still 75% left. I believe first initial charge did not completely take 25% of battery pack, but part of it. The third charge I used two mobile devices as well, this time my Android and iOS one. Android was at 50% and iOS at 40%. After both devices were completely charged battery pack (per LED indicator) had 50% left. The last device I charged which took all the power left n battery pack was my Windows mobile (from completely dead to full battery). Needless to say I am very impressed with this battery pack, you can charge up a single or multiple mobile devices at various battery levels up to five times. Of course this is all dependent of your device and it’s current battery level. Still I highly recommend this product.
PROS: Easy to use, portable, includes USB cable, lightweight, flashlight, matte finish prevents it from being a fingerprint magnet and it is aesthetically pleasing.
CONS: White color can also make it easier to get dirty, a travel pouch or protective case would have come in handy and LED indicator can make it a bit difficult to tell actual battery level. Would have like to have seen a color distinction for different power levels like from green to yellow to red.
PROS: Compact design yet powerful. Fits in my purse and comes in very handy while traveling.
CONS: Can't think of any cons.
Power banks all do the same thing for the most part, they are there to charge up your devices and that is basically it. But for me, my power bank needs to offer more... it needs to be durable and travel friendly while still offering enough juice for all of my devices. That is why I love this Monoprice power bank because it doesn't give off a cheap feel or look. It has a nice weight to it and the size is perfect. I feel as if Monoprice struck a sweet spot design wise which is very important for me. I would mention though that this isn’t something you would stick in your pocket and walk around with. This is something you’d throw in your backpack, purse, car, etc.
After really using this thing on a daily basis, I can confirm that it's a must-have for almost anyone that leaves their house. The amount of times I was able to charge my various devices without having to charge the powerbank itself was amazing.
For the price, not only do you get a ton of power but you also get a quality product. I highly recommend this.
PROS: Durable, travel friendly, nice design, offers built-in flashlight, allows dual charging
CONS: No wall adapter
Using my Samsung Galaxy S4 mini I can get 5 good charges (From 15% notification to 100% each time) while still using the phone. I was able to get 3.5 charges on the phone and a full charge on my Nexus 7 tablet before depleting it.
All in all, I have to say this is the one thing I never knew I needed and don't plan on living without.
PROS: Solid as a brick. It is very easy to use. LED indicator is nice and stays lit through use. LED flashlight is surprisingly useful. Charges rather quickly.
CONS: The only con is the color, while white looks good initially it doesn't take long to look worn, especially if you take it with you regularly.
Comes packaged in the same packaging as the 16,000mAh Power Bank. It’s also about half the size as its older brother, which is nice as it is easier to carry every day and is also lighter. It only comes with a USB-A to Micro USB cable. No all adapter for charging the actual power bank. Wish it had a wall adapter to charge the brick with. Maybe instead of implementing an LED it could have had a charger block instead?
PROS: Product: Small and easily transportable in a pocket (Jacket, Sweatshirt). Comes with a USB-A to Micro USB cable for charging the bank and any mobile devices that use the connector. It feels well built like the older brother 16,000mAh. It does not look cheap even though the price for it feels right.
Accessories: It only comes with a USB-A to Micro USB cable. No all adapter for charging the actual power bank. Wish it had a wall adapter to charge the brick with. Maybe instead of implementing an LED it could have had a charger block instead?
CONS: LED: Not very bright, kind of a gimmick to be honest. Would have much preferred a wall adapter to charge the brick with instead.
Would have been nice to have 2 2A ports instead of 1 2A and 1 1A ports.
PROS: Nice looking and functionally good product. I have used it once to charge iPhone 6. It holds its charge quite solidly!! Perhaps we should comment the product for at least 6 months to a year so our assessment is more reliable. So far so good. A good value.
When the device arrived my phone was completely dead, to the point where it wouldn't even power up when it was plugged into the wall adapter.
I plugged in my phone to this device and was pleasantly surprised to see that it fully charged my cell phone within 1 hour and did not even use one bar on the battery meter.
I ran my phone dead about 4 more times over the course of 3 days, using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi heavily and I was able to fully charge my phone 4 more times with only losing 3 bars on the battery meter.
This power bank is awesome, I will keep this fully charged and take it with me as I use Bluetooth quite heavy in my car playing music and making calls on the run.
Thank you Monoprice for such a great product!
PROS: Nice build quality, dual USB output (charge 2 devices at once), includes build-in LED flash light, LED charge/power meter and very nice white Micro USB cable. Also works with Lightning Cables (I tested Apple and non-Apple branded) and even a Lightning to Micro USB adapter.
CONS: None at all.
