Can an external USB 5v power supply be used to power the USB Hub/Fans inlace of or in addition to the USB cable to the laptop? There appears to be a power plug (female) on the Hub, near the ports and the switch, but no power supply is provided.

BEST ANSWER: Hello, yes you may use the power plug port to power this cooler if you do not have spare USB ports you can use that method. I hope this answers your question and thank you!
None of my USB 2.0 devices are recognized when I plug them into this unit. I have the unit connected and powered to my laptop. Is there a known issue with the device's USB ports/functionality? The fans run fine, but the USB devices go unrecognized.

BEST ANSWER: I have only plugged in USB headphones, but they worked fine. You might try a different USB port on your laptop, see if its the port.

Nicely made but one fan is noisy already
I bought two of these for some laptops that are prone overheating.

These stands aren't really big enough for these 17.3" notebooks but they do hold them.

I just wish the fans had longer lasting bearings.

One is a 2010 vintage HP Pavilion with the first generation of Core i7 mobile chips. This system runs too hot to touch when on the 120 Watt adapter but one the stand it stays at a reasonable temperature.

The other is an even older HP with a mobile Turion chip that also runs hot. Again, this keeps it cook enough to avoid problems.

PROS: Nice looking and good design mechanically.

CONS: These are on 24x7 and one fan is already noisy.

    Keeping it cool
This keeps my older HP laptop running cool. My HP compaq 8510P is notorious for running very hot. This stand keeps it running cool.

    PROS: Well Made
    Has 4 USB connections,

Good stand, USB ports are unreliable
I use a MacBook Air as my every day computer and this stand is great. It fits the size of the computer and I like that I can adjust the height and keep things like my backup drive underneath. The USB ports are a nice idea, poorly executed. In this day and age it's hard to imagine how they can mess this up but my guess is they use very cheap parts to keep the cost down.

PROS: Perfect fit for a MacBook Air or similar.

Allows me to have my Time Machine underneath for convenience

The fan is nice when I need it, glad I can switch it off

CONS: The USB ports are very unreliable. I have tried a lot of cables in they all work loose after a while. This should not happen.

It works exactly as advertised. I only flip it on when my computer's internal fan starts to spool up and It generally gets it to cool down very quickly. Fans are in the exact right spots for maximum efficiency. When I came across this one, it was a "finally!" moment after searching through tons of other brands. Monoprice comes through again!

PROS: Fits a 13" MacBook perfectly and looks like it was made for it.

Bottom lip does not hurt your wrists whatsoever. Best design I've come across

    USB hub is actually usable.

    Can't beat the price.

CONS: Not the most ideal for a lap, but doable. It's better made for laptop that is meant to stay on a desk, which is what I purchased it for.

Fans can be a little on the noisy side, but silence was not expected

The detachable USB power cable is nice, but I would not have minded a more discrete non-detachable one.

This was a great purchase. The value is unbelievable but the function of this device is incredible.

PROS: This was a great purchase. The value is unbelievable but the function of this device is incredible.

    CONS: None

    Laptop cooling stand, adjustable
If you have a Mac book pro, just get one. It will not run hot anymore.

PROS: Perfect to cool and put the monitor in the Mac Pro Book at a good hight to match with the larger monitor next to it in the studio. Adds extra USB ports too boot which is a real benifit since I have lots of USB and USB midi cables, disk drives, mouse, keyboard all hooked up at once.

CONS: Heck no, I cannot even complain about the price

Very well constructed and worth twice the price I paid! Well Done MONOPRICE!

PROS: SOLID construction, front lip keeps laptop from sliding, USB ports and a switch to turn fans on and off.

CONS: fans are a little loud, but if you play music at your desk, you will not hear them.

    Looks good, feels sturdy.
Bought this for my mom, who likes to use her laptop propped up on an ottoman. It looks good, feels very sturdy, and it has two mounted fans that help circulate air underneath her laptop very effectively.

I was surprised to find this is also a USB hub (guess I didn't scrutinize the photos enough). That's ostensibly handy, but it's USB 2.0 (the older, slower version of USB) and not powered, which makes the hub almost useless nowadays.

    PROS: Matches Macbook anodized-aluminum look.
    Two fans.
    Feels very sturdy.
Doubles as a decent USB 2.0 hub.

CONS: A little larger and heavier than other cooling stands.

Over all I'd say this is one of the better laptop coolers I've tried. I haven't had any issues with fan noise thus far and it seems to cradle the laptop well. I use it on my an old Dell Inspiron, which is a bit heavy so I had to reinforce the height adjustment stand.

    PROS: 1. Light weight

    2. Multiple USB ports

    3. Dual fans prevent overheating

    4. Sleek and stylish without the hefty price tag

CONS: 1. Not good for older/heavy laptops

    2. Flimsy stand causes laptop to shake while typing

    3. No reinforcements for stand

You get what you pay for
The fan is noisy. Not the usual fan noise, but a grindy-clicky noise. There is a switch to turn it off, which is small, but cuts of the noise. The USB ports are also very finicky. The slightest movement breaks the connection and causes the laptop to lose the devices. That's annoying. Overall, skip it unless you are wiling to pay for a simple aluminum stand and are willing to forget about the fan and hub.

    PROS: Cheaper than anything else...

CONS: Noisy fans with little airflow
USB ports don't make very good connections
    Aluminum has some sharp edges
