Premium 3D Printer Filament 1.75MM 0.1kg/spool, Cleaning Filament

Keep the nozzles and extruders on your 3D printer printing like new using this 1.75mm Cleaning Filament from Monoprice!

It is a good idea to periodically clean the nozzles and extruders on your 3D printer to ensure that they feed filament smoothly and evenly. It is also good to clean when switching filament colors or material types. This cleaning filament is designed to adhere to any stray material left in the nozzle and remove it along with the cleaning filament.

To clean using this filament, simply print about 12" of material. It prints at a wide 160 ~ 260°C temperature range.

Essential tool for everyone who owns a 3D printer!
Monoprice sent me their Premium 3D Printer Filament 1.75MM 0.1kg/spool Cleaning Filament (Product 12504) to evaluate. I’ll start by saying that I am totally impressed by this product. I have seen cleaning filament from other companies, but never considered buying any.

If you have used a 3D printer for a while, one thing is certain—you are familiar with nozzle clogs. I have my system of using old guitar strings, tiny drill bits, acetone, butane torches and plenty of time to clean clogged nozzles. About a year ago, I purchased extra nozzles for my E3Dv6 so that I could instantly swap out a clogged nozzle for a new or cleaned one. Even so, it is always a pain to swap nozzles when I’d rather be printing. And in the process of swapping nozzle, I sometimes threw something out of alignment, unleveled the bed or most recently, broke the leads on the thermal resister—a total pain to repair.

Enter Monoprice’s cleaning filament. As I mentioned, I usually have a clogged nozzle or two hanging around to clean. So, I popped one onto my Prusa i3. Sure enough, extruding PLA filament was thin and curling back onto the heat block. So, I loaded the cleaning filament, set the extruder at 225c Made a tick mark 300mm into the filament (Monoprice suggests printing 12” between 160c and 260c) Then I extruded the cleaning filament.

I went in with minimal hope. The first 50mm, or so, extruded were thin and inconsistent like the PLA I initially tried to print. Around 100mm I saw signs of life in the old nozzle. By 150mm, and to my surprise, the nozzle was printing like new!!! I stopped extruding at 200mm—about 100mm shy of what Monoprice recommends.

At around $10, this product is a Godsend and a steal at the same time! I can’t imagine how much time and money I could have saved if I discovered this filament earlier. My initial impressions are all positive. I will have to include this cleaning filament in my maintenance routine to see if the abrasive nature of the filament has any long-term effects on the nozzle diameter. For now, I am a happy camper with more print time and less clog time!

PROS: Total time saver when you have a clogged head.

Even more efficient at clearing a clog than Monoprice states.

    CONS: Absolutely none!

    Nearly a necessity
I'm new at 3D printing, and (perhaps predictably) gummed the extruder head up...several times. Running a few inches of cleaning filament through fixed it easily.

The instructions called for 12" per clean I just ran it until it was no longer discolored and that seems to be working fine. Perhaps long-term it will prove problematic, but I don't know yet or if the 12" measurement was just to be absolutely sure.

    PROS: Easy, fast

CONS: Instructions maybe call for too much filament use

Filament was too large (by just a hair) to easily run through my printer.
