Besides being listed as supporting the higher Cat standard, what about the construction of this PID 15697 (Cat6A) makes it better than PID 7286 (Cat6)?

BEST ANSWER: Hello, thank you for your question. The difference between the two is that anything that supports a Cat6a standard allows you to get the most out of your Cat6a wiring since Cat6a doubles the data transmission bandwidth, from 250 to 500 MHz over standard Cat6. It also decreases the chance of crosstalk interference; and provides superior reliability and transmission speeds through greater lengths of cable.
Will this coupler still work if connecting two CAT7 cables together or, say, a CAT7 to a CAT6/CAT5e, etc.? I realize that the coupler may restrict the data transfer speed if not designed for CAT7, but I just want to be sure that the product will still work with the speed just being capped at CAT6 or whatever the lowest standard cable happens to be that is being plugged into it, etc.

BEST ANSWER: Yes, it will work for connecting any CAT cables. The speed will be capped at the lowest cable rating or at CAT6 rating should you be connecting 2 CAT7 cables

    Not Cat6
I bought these to extend a Cat6 cable an extra 20'. The cable tested fine before the coupler was installed. When tested after extending, the PSNext test failed. The total length of the extended cable was 143'. It meets all Cat5e standards but not all Cat6. I used an Agilent Wirescope 350 cable certifier for testing.

PROS: They're cheap and look well constructed.

    CONS: Don't meet Cat6 specs.

3 of 10 dead on arrival
3 of 10 that I bought were dead on arrival. I tested all with the same cables. Fortunately, Monoprice immediately agreed to replace the bad units.

    PROS: price

    CONS: quality and reliability

    Cat6 Inline Coupler
I needed 3 more feet of ethernet cable after a 25 foot run but didn't want to have to buy a much longer cable than I needed and have to deal with too much cable that I would have to shove behind a desk. This fit the bill and the network speed was not affected at all. Perfect fix for a little problem.

PROS: Does exactly what it says. Cheap.

    CONS: None.

A close examination of the internal circuit board suggests that each line is delay matched down to the picosecond level. Truly a CAT-6 worthy coupler.

    PROS: Great little coupler.

    Test before use
I purchased 10 of these for various uses. Mostly to have them in my bag of tricks. After seeing the reviews on these decide to test them all before using them on a paying job.

Test 1: RJ45 Mapper. This tests all the pins point to point for continuity with DC. All tested OK

Test2: T1 Test set. Sunset T10. Most customer premise smart jacks for T1 connectivity terminate in a RJ45. The T1 terminates on pins 1-2, 4-5 . Tested all the couplers to a T1 looping plug at 1.544Mbts (ESF, B8ZS, QRSS). 7 tested good, three would not pass traffic. Used a cleaning spray on them and all 10 passed traffic this time.

Test 3: Router to Laptop computer at 10 and 100Mbt. Tests pins 1-2, 3-6. of the ten, nine passed data and one would not connect at all at either speed. Took this one and double checked on the T1 test set. It work there but not at router speeds. Connected and disconnected several times but would never pass 10Mbt. This one I just tossed in the T1 test equipment bag for a test coupler.

    PROS: They mostly work

CONS: Test and verify before use

Decent quality very inexpensive buy extras
I used this to run Cat6 from basement to third floor bedroom, via the attic. It took 100 feet of Cat6 plus another 15 feet. This inline coupler worked perfectly for a few months, and then my computer started having network connectivity failures (which I addressed by turning autonegotiation off) and finally was unable to communicate with the router. Thankfully, I read others' reviews of this product before I ordered and ordered extras in case of problem. Also thankfully, this coupler was up in my attic, rather than in a wall cavity, so I was able to replace it easily enough, once I found the problem.

PROS: Very inexpensive. When they work, the throughput is excellent.

CONS: As others have noted, these can fail after they've been working fine for a while. They're cheap, so buy extras in case of failure. Do not use anywhere that you can't easily inspect and replace in case of problems.

    not so good
I bought ten of these and tested them right out of the package and seven out of ten failed. I used a KLEIN TOOL VDV Scout Pro VDV501-53

CONS: 7 out of 10 bad

    Mixed bag
Bought two, and only one worked. The defective one worked at first, but within an hour stopped working. Hopefully the other one lasts. These are hit or miss!
