Are the Monoprice's CAT6 surface mount boxes unshielded, half-shielded, or fully shielded? The User's Manual shows all three options. The product description page does not make it clear what is available. From the available pictures, it appears only the unshielded is available.
PROS: Works great - the screws + sticky-pad hold securely to wall, and options for routing cables into the wall or along wall are helpful.
CONS: The plastic around the cables where you attach the cable-tie to hold down the cable from someone yanking it out of the box is very thin - I've broken it just pulling the cable-tie down tight.
The cable labeling was a bit hard to decipher until I read the paper pamphlet that came with the box (the label on the actual box doesn't make it clear which clamp is for white/color vs. color for either TIA568A or TIA568B).
This review is coming from an AV integrator that does installations and cable terminations all day. In response to the previous review from (Joe the Plumber), no offense but, great products like these often get bad reviews from people that does not know how to install the product correctly and give it a bad rating. AV professionals like myself has the "correct" punch-down tools to install these boxes and cuts the wires correctly (not a "pushdown" tool that leaves the excess wires on the side). The labeling of pins are clear and not confusing if you are in the industry and know the wiring schematic. These jacks are not removable for a reason, if you want removable keystones, then you would of purchased the keystone boxes that let you fit keystone jacks in. This box is specific for Cat6 so that we can install a couple of surface ran cables faster and know that we only need it to be Cat6 jacks. Everyone has their own field of specialty, I don't trash your plumming equipment because I'm not familiar how one works better than other, so don't trash ours. Don't like it, return and try something else.
PROS: great quality, very solid compare to other ones I've tried, loved the gloss finish.
CONS: if the labelings can be a little smaller and off to the edge would be great.
This could be a great product if it was composed of 2 removable keystones that could be attached outside of the box, and then inserted into it, then mounted on the wall. Instead, the keystones are permanently attached/ a part of the enclosure. The pins are a nuisance to identify. If you use a push down tool like the one they sell here at Monoproce (a real POS if I ever saw one) then you can't count on the tool actually cutting off the wire pieces as it should. PLUS, the opposing sides of the pins makes it very easy to confuse the direction you should have the aforementioned push down tool oriented at, given the confusing nature of the orientation of the pins and exactly what should go into each one.
I installed 6 of these and had a couple of failures, due to the above issues. I did not enjoy installing these things, at all. I have no problem installing wires into usual keystones.
Unless you have a compelling reason to buy this product, and unless you have really great eye to hand coordination and concentration, steer clear of this product
PROS: Decent quality of construction. Not hard to affix to the wall. Two ways to route the incoming cables.
CONS: Pins somewhat hard to identify. Middle two rows of pins are extremely close to each other. Easy to confuse which end of pushdown tool you should use on which row of pins. Not worth the aggravation the product produces
