The versatility of the USB-C port means that it can simultaneously perform several different functions, including data transfer and power input. Capable of data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps, this hub is also backwards compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1 devices. A true plug & play device, no drivers or software installations are required to use this Gigabit adapter or USB ports on a Windows® or Mac® OS X® machine.
USB-C Power Port: The USB-C charging port allows you to connect your original USB-C charger, so you can charge your laptop's battery rather than draining it, while using this adapter.
3-Port USB Hub: Add three USB 3.0 Type-A ports, each capable of delivering data speeds up to 5Gbps, for connecting SuperSpeed external peripherals and charging mobile devices.

Questions and Answers
For reference, the USB Type C jack/plug that protrudes from the adapter (and connects to the host device) could also be referred to as a "USB Type C Male".
You have to realize, I spent weeks trying to find a hub like this after I bought my first Macbook.
I wanted a hub that offered USB and Ethernet connections while providing USB-C power pass-through. If you look on Amazon, it's almost impossible to find a product that offers all this. Some offer USB but no power pass-through. Some offer Ethernet, but no USB connections. Some offer USB and Ethernet but no power pass-through.
So, I figured I'd look on Monoprice and lo' and behold, there is actually an adapter that offers it all.
I am using it right now on my 12" Macbook. I have a gigabit ethernet and a USB thumb drive plugged in to the side of the laptop. There is also power still being supplied to my Macbook. It's amazing! The ethernet speed is exactly where it should be. No slow downs.
But here's the ultimate test of how well this hub works....and I know because I just returned a Chinese brand hub that had almost all the same features (minus the ethernet plug). I jiggled the cable. No disconnection. The hub I just returned automatically disconnected the power when accidentally jiggled. This Monoprice adapter does not do it.
This is a solidly built adapter. Take my word for it, this is a quality built hub not some cheap knock-off.
PROS: USB-C adapter that offers 3 USB inputs, Ethernet connection and USB-C Power Pass-through. WOW!
CONS: None, other than I wish it was available in a darker color to match my Macbook. However, not a deal-breaker by any means.
It seems like the adapter shuts off or the system disconnects it after going to sleep for a period. This stops the adapter from charging and if your external keyboard is connected to the adapter, it won't trigger the MBP to wake. I was able to use a bluetooth mouse to wake the MBP but it’s hit or miss getting it to recognize or wake the adapter.
The only solution seems to be to set Energy Saver to “Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when display is off”.
While the computer is awake, this adapter is great and there are no drivers needed. Once it goes to sleep, it’s almost useless until the MBP recognizes it again.

PROS: Small (!), most useful number and variety of ports, works well so far

Mostly running a Blu-ray drive off the USB 3 (and ripping audio CDs), no noticeable difference with the direct USB 3 port, albeit a judgement call, not determined via benchmarking.

I've just told users they need to plug the power cord directly into the laptop and that works just fine. Relatively minor workaround since the cost of this is a fraction of what it would take to get the same from Apple.
