It does work just requires the right drivers
I got the adapter and plugged itin right away giving windows 7 the chance to install the right drivers. That didn't happen. So I started reading and was told to install the drivers then plug in. Tried the drivers from prolific first then the CD. Neither of which worked with Win 7 x64.

I didn't get it to work until I found this nice little how to from a different cable manufacture using the same chipset.
    http://www.tri-plc.com/USB-RS232/drivers.htm

Using those instructions I was able to get it to work.

PROS: Low cost and does work eventually

CONS: Drivers on CD don't work, the directories on the CD are not as the instructions say and you have to search for them yourself

Works great without the need for drivers in Windows
I have bought a total of five of these to use for consoling into Cisco routers & switches in my home CCNA study lab. They seem to work great with Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 without the need for additional drivers. They show up as a "Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port" devices in Device Manager as they utilize a Prolific chipset. I have an older, non-Monoprice adapter that cost probably three times as much and uses the same chipset and has lasted me four years without issue. I have a feeling the Monoprice adapters will be just as reliable.

PROS: *Price compared to other manufacturers.
*No drivers required when using with Windows (10, 8.1, 8, 7... not sure about older versions).
    *Seems to work without issue.

CONS: *Comes in a blister pack that has to be cut open. Not a big deal but I'd love to see this form of packaging grow out of favor.

    Perfect. Worked like a charm
Needed to update my HK AVR254. Plugged it in, and Windows found the drivers. It all went really smoothly.

    PROS: It works with perfectly
Comes with driver cd just in case, but I didn't even have to use it (Windows has the drivers)

    CONS: None

    5/5
My new motherboard doesn't have a serial cable, and this USB adapter allows me to configure my switches with Putty very easily. The hardware was recognized by Windows 7 x64, but the driver install failed because, at the time, the Prolific support site was down and my computer wasn't able to automatically pull down the necessary driver. No worries, though, it include a small drivers CD with the necessary Windows 7 x64 drivers. Up and running in 5 min, and the price was hard to beat.

    Works great!
Thank goodness Monoprice defined where to find the appropriate driver.

Using this on a Win 7 64-bit microcomputer to control flat panel displays... Have 4 of these plugged into it so the PC can tell the 4 displays to power on and off daily. I use these adapters to plug into DB9-Cat5 adapters to run across the campus to the displays. At the display end, I have a Cat5-DB9 adapter to switch it back. (got those adapters at MonoPrice, too!)

Cable length is perfect if your computer is right next to whatever you want to control, otherwise, plan on getting an extension.

PROS: Works great on Win7 64-bit OS.

    CONS: None!

Does not work out of the box
    5/5

    PROS: None

CONS: Does not work out of the box. Requires setup and the directions are poor at best. We threw the units in the trash out of frustration

Be Sure to Download the Updated Driver
The cable is great. I'd give it a 10 but the drivers supplied with it on the companion disc made me lose several hours of work and caused my Windows 7 x64 machine to BSOD several times before I installed the debugging tools and examined the crash dumps that had been generated. The fault was in a driver file named ser2pl64.sys dated 2007 which I had installed from the disc that accompanies the cable. That driver has a bug in it that causes the system to crash during data transfer in some conditions. I came back to the Monoprice site and found the link to the newer driver, installed it (which is dated 10/27/2008) and it's working fine now.

    PROS: Good quality

CONS: Drivers on the supplied disc can cause Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) in Windows 7 x64. Download the new ones!
