Can this cable be used to connect an external hard drive with USB-C output to a Thunderbolt 2 input on a MacBook Pro?
    Stephen C on Sep 28, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Thank you for your question.

This product is designed specifically to support Mini DisplayPort video signals, and will not carry data.

While Thunderbolt 2 uses a Mini DisplayPort connector, it is not interchangeable with a Mini DisplayPort cable.

Can this be used to connect a 2017 iMac with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to a 2011 iMac with Thunderbolt 1, to use in Target Display Mode?

BEST ANSWER: Honestly, I couldn't tell you if that would work. My use case was trying to connect a Dell XPS 15 laptop (that has Thunderbolt 3 USB-C input) to an Apple Cinema display (with a mini-display port input) so I can use it as an extended monitor for my Dell laptop. This just does not work, most likely because Apple's technology is so proprietary. Its entirely possible that the configuration you are attempting with the Apple devices will work, but I've never tried to use it in that way. Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Will this connect an external drive with Thunderbolt 2 (display port style) to a laptop with Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C style)?
    Parke G on Jun 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I don't think so. I think this cable is only good for a monitor. No Data.

Works as advertised for using iMac (27-inch, Late 2009) as secondary display with iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017).

Doesn't work with MacBook Pro to LG 34UM95-P Monitor
I bought this cable with the intention of connecting my MacBook Pro Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to my external monitor which is an LG 34UM95-P which has a Thunderbolt 1 connection (same size and shape as a Mini DisplayPort). While the cable itself physically connects to both the MacBook Pro and the LG monitor, I could not get my MacBook Pro to detect the monitor using this cable.

As usual with anything that I have ordered from Monoprice, the order came quickly and the cable itself seems to be solidly constructed. It just didn't work for what I was attempting to do. It may work for connections to other devices, which is why I give it the middle of the road 3 star review.
