BEST ANSWER: No, it doesn't. It's a plug and play device. No drivers needed. No configuration required. I used mine to transfer files from a Windows 10 computer to a Windows XP computer. Worked flawlessly! (Approx 1 hour to transfer six, 5 GB files). Mind you, being a USB 2.0 cable, large files take a while to transfer. Since I do not transfer lots of large files on a regular basis I considered that to be acceptable. If you will be transferring large files on a daily basis, you might wish to pay extra for a USB 3.0 transfer cable.
I want to send midi and digital audio streams back and forth between computers in real time, like a network. Will this device allow that?

Would it be safe to use a USB extension cable with this?

    It's great!
I love this cable. It could've saved me hours of stressing over external drives if I had bought it sooner.

PROS: Automatically installed its own software to transfer data, organized software format, has a light to let you know what the cable is doing, no hiccups, allows transfer of a full drive or just a single file, allows for file-synching, shows the data transfer window on both computers, allows defragmentation through the program of drives not in use.

CONS: none so far. I suppose the cable could be longer

    Time saver
I have a computer that I do not want to connect to my business network. This allows a one to one connection of two off network computers. Worked flawlessly. USB3.0 would even be better.

PROS: Great for transferring data from one computer hard drive (hdd) to another)

CONS: Virus software detects the hosting program as a threat, but it is most likely a false positive.

    USB Transfer Cable
Having tried other transfer cables and being sadly disappointed with the software that was that is included with them, all on some separate media, and others that are independent of the cable, including Windows 7 Easy Transfer, it was a great delight in the useability of the firmware, EasySuite. Yes , I said firmware.

It's not indicated on the item when you order what software comes with the cable, and I almost thought it was missing, but when you plug the cable in, the transfer utility asked to be installed. It's part of the cable!. You'll NEVER have to go looking for, or have to bring with you in the field, the software! And on top of that, it just works.

Now to be fair, I have not had problems with the various cables that I have used, its just the software that has to be used with them

    I couldn't be happier.

    Monoprice, I Thank you.

    PROS: Read my review.

    Simple, effective, recommended.
This thing was incredibly helpful, and performed exactly as advertised. I had 27 gigs of photos, documents, videos and spreadsheets to transfer. I plugged the cable in, followed the instructions, and went to lunch. When I came back, everything was right where I'd designated, no issues or problems at all. It's a pretty smart product, and although the graphics interface on the included transfer program is a little primitive, it's actually kind of beautiful in its simplicity and pure function. There is also a blue LED indicator light to let you know when data is transferring, which is a nice touch.

PROS: Does exactly what it should. Connect the two computers, and the file transfer application opens on the new computer. Select the things you want to transfer, walk away for a few minutes, and when you come back, all your data is right where you told it to be.

CONS: Does not work with Windows Easy Transfer, but the built-in software works well enough so it's not THAT big of a deal.

    Works like it should
Have data will transfer. Once I get the laptop repaired, I'll transfer that stuff, too.

PROS: Once I figured out how to get the computers to talk to each other, it was a snap to transfer data from the XP to the Windows 8. I may get these for my brothers for Christmas, but don't tell them.

CONS: Just figuring out how to get the computers to connect, which wasn't too hard.

Works great but not on windows Surface
Extremely easy to set up and run, got the job done on the desktop PC. Was really hoping it would work with the Surface.

Would be 10/10 if it had worked on the Surface.

PROS: Works perfectly on the Desktop PC transferring files from the old PC.

CONS: Would have been nice if it would work on the Surface, I could have used it a lot more often. I guess it is not meant to work on Windows 8 RT.

So if anyone is looking to use this on a Windows Surface, the software will not work on Windows RT

    It works
The cord is okay, looks good. Works every time. The bad thing is that I noticed that when you transfer multiple files, lets say, 20,000 files weighting 40GB, then it takes forever to transfer. If you transfer just one 40GB file, then it works a lot better. That is the only down side, other than that, it works great.

PROS: Easy to use, very convenient.

CONS: Very slow transfer when transferring many files.

The data transfer cable that didn't transfer.
nothing but problems. First off it didn't come with any instructions, which computer is the host and which is remote. Which end goes to which computer. After a lot of playing around I managed to find the get the two computers up on the screens. Now what??? Again there wasn't a directory explaining how transfer the information. Isn't there a way to transfer all the files without clicking and dragging. By the way, I tried clicking and dragging with one file and that didn't work. I'm not a computer wiz but I'm not stupid either. If you can help me that would be great, if not, then I'll have to get someone in to do it for me. I thought that this would be quick and easy but it has just been a major headache.

    PROS: Inexpensive

CONS: doesn't come with any tutorial or instructions. Couldn't find a video to explain it..

    Great cable
Searched for a PC to Mac USB transfer cable and this one us the only one I found that was advertised to work. It works great for PC-Mac and Mac-PC. There is software for both that loads when plugged in. It is easy to use and the feasted rate is good. Highly recommend!

PROS: Easy to use. Fast transfer.

CONS: None that I have seen.
